I know the video card isn't that good, I'm just wondering in terms of upgradability (in the future), and if I would be able to play some older games (NWN2, WOW, Gothic 3, etc.) right away at decent settings.

quads are generally better than phenoms. IMO get a core 2 duo. They're better at the moment for gaming. In the future games might make more use out of 4 cores. But by the time that becomes standard it will be time for a upgrade anyway.

I dont think it's any good. Sure, it's good for personal use, web surfing, etc but not for gaming. A 2.2 ghz is way too slow and it's going to hold you back. Also, keep in mind that these "retail" PCs cannot be overclocked. Not even with an overclocking software. I own an HP from bestbuy, so trust me on this. And dream on if you want to play Crysis. Even with the best graphics card out there, it will bottleneck your PC like crazy. I just tried last night and Crysis is spanking my computer. For $800, you might as well build your own. You'll find so much more joy building your own PC rig and you can customize it to your liking. On top of that, you can overclock which I find very fun to do if you have the know-how. You can spank Crysis with your own build. Dont buy retail, you'll be throwing your money away. Besides, it's cheaper to build.

Thanks guys. However, I do need a new desktop right away. I'd like to build, but I can't take the time to figure it out/do that. So basically I'm trying to find the best retail computer for the money. If anyone knows of any, it's appreciated.

When I built my first Computer I had no idea what I was doing. I just followed the manual. That's how easy it is.

Put stands into the case, this is the only important thing you have to remember, because some manuals dont tell you to do this and then youll short circuit your mobo. Screw motherboard into the stands. attach the CPU and cpu cooler (alot easier than it sounds). slot in the ram. screw in PSU screw in hard drive and dvd. And then plug all cables to the right place onthe motherboard according to your motherboard manual.

Edit: also you could just attach the cpu and cpu cooler and ram first and then put the motherboard into the case. This is safer. And easier.

It takes not even 2 hours to do all that. If you got your parts in the morning you would be playing games in the afternoon.

And if you print a detailed tutorial off on the net it will even easier. As they're more detailed than the manuals. Just study the tutorial while waiting for your parts.

Alright, I guess I could give it a try.

Anyone have a suggested setup for, in or around the $700-800 range?

Newegg is a good place to purchase parts, yes?

(thanks for the write-up by the way)

Here is links and everything is compatable, end price is $650, if you need a harddrive add $100, i assume you already have a keyboard, mouse, and monitor?

Processor - E8400 dual core @ 3 ghz http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115037 $180

Video Card- ATI 4850 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103060 $175

Motherboard - gigabyte(supports new 45nm cpus) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128077 $65

Power Supply - coolmaster 550 watt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171025 $80

Case - Coolmaster http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119152 $70

Memory- adata 2gb in dual channel http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820211066 $46

with shipping that ends up being $650 and it absolutly kills that system you were thinking about, you might want to get thermal grease, but if you have a radio shack around you they sell it for cheaper then online because of the shipping. if you need any help come on here or look on you tube for pc building. Im a idiot and i did it. just takes a few hours out of your time. The hardest part for me was selecting the parts, and i did that for yea. Soo good luck.

this system will kill games and any application for a good while. A $1500-$2000 prebuilt comptuer. Plus this way if you learn to overclock, you can with a processor which is just begging to overclock, but if you don't it still is fantastic and will max any game and make your computer use very smooth.

www.newegg.com is definitely the way to go. I use to shop tigerdirect.com until I finally convinced myself to go newegg.com and so far, their prices can't be beat. I live in the United States, but I understand some people are from other parts like Australia or Canada. If you can shop there, then I would highly recommend it. :)

You can easily spend under $1000 with a beast PC rig.

i would go xp because it is more compatable with much more programs and isn't a system hog. if you do deciede to go with vista you will need to get 4 gigs of memory, and if you get the mobo i showed you, it only has 2 slots for memory, so you'll have to get two 2 gigs sticks.

Doesn't really matter but I would recommend getting one that is 7200 RPM and 3.0 GB/s, things will load faster. The size is really up to what you want to use your desktop for.

I would personally add 2 GB to that rig. It is a very very good PC, but 4 GB would be faster in my opinion. Also, I would go with Vista personally. It doesn't slow down over time like my old XP laptop did, and I personally like it way better than XP.

its over priced and the gpu is utter junk for new games. might run 2004-05 games ok but anything from the 360 gen wont run well. a 6800 will completle destory it. wow will run ok, but forget about the others unless you call 10fps playable

Thanks guys. However, I do need a new desktop right away. I'd like to build, but I can't take the time to figure it out/do that. So basically I'm trying to find the best retail computer for the money. If anyone knows of any, it's appreciated.

NCIX, build a custom PC, trust me, they have good prices, i got my rig with a quad core and two 4850s for about 1,900.
DONT buy retail pcs, they never last as long, and they are not overclockable.

Listen to him/her. Retail comps suck big time and they'll just bottleneck everything you put in it because you cannot overclock. Besides, the parts they put in there are usually of low quality, starting with the PSU down to the harddrive. You only buy retail unless you have absolutely no intentions of playing video games, except maybe for solitaire. Heh. :P

Its HP, of course its overpriced. Snd if the O.P dosen't want to build then he can go to a local computer shop and ask them to assemble it for you. should be around 100 dollars or so.

so in therm of logic if it more powerufll and can be oc more.like i donno 3.8ghz Quad core
vs 4.0Ghz OC e8500
and yet E8600 is said to be proven to be able to be OC to 4.5Ghz Without water-cooling but id not try so .

THe Q9550 has plenty of multipliers so it should overclock well into the 3.5-3.8 range.

I would say from 10-15fps, that's if the E8500 can overclock to 4.3ghz. That's a 500mhz difference. That's pretty big. If not, then not much difference, maybe 5-7 fps.

Well, I wouldnt even consider buying 9550 at it's price right now. There's going to be a price drop at the end of July. I'm waiting for that, and it should bring it down to $329, which is the price of the Q9450. That isnt a bad price for a great quad-core. But anything more than that is just overkill on the wallet.

sadly my E7200 OCed is probably better then any quad core for crysis. Because games(yes even crysis) don't really support quad cores, it isn't as good as dual cores, plus they aren't as easy to oc. Dual cores are better for gaming at the moment and will be for bit longer i presume, until there are 8 cores! then 4 cores will become the gaming norm(im guessing anywase).

[QUOTE="X360PS3AMD05"]Bleh, E7200/E8400/Q6600 are all i would consider. Not worth the extra cash when they'll pretty much OC the same.Elann2008

Well, I wouldnt even consider buying 9550 at it's price right now. There's going to be a price drop at the end of July. I'm waiting for that, and it should bring it down to $329, which is the price of the Q9450. That isnt a bad price for a great quad-core. But anything more than that is just overkill on the wallet.

i stick by the old hadage of any part more then $150 is too much, atleast for me.
