Hello, I'm a pretty big PC gamer, but lately I've been moving towards the Xbox. Why? My PC is old. 2.5 years old.

Dell XPS M1710 (Lapto, so can't upgrade)

Intel Centrino Duo 1.83GHZ

1GB RAM

80GB HDD

Nvidia 7900GS

I cryed when I tested Crysis on it-it could only play it meduim-low. And I don't want to think how BIA:HH and Crysis Warhead are going to react. So my question is this: is it worth building a new pc? Is it acceptable to have a desktop as well as a laptop, or is that too stupid? I also really want to get into the blu-ray format, so my other idea was PS3, but their exclusives don't interest me much. Basically I started this thread for replies on whether or not this is a good idea. I'm young, I got money to burn...

It's your money. You can spend it on whatever you want. If it makes you feel stupid then yes it is, if not well then no it isn't. As for your comment about the PS3, why not just buy a stand alone blu-ray player then?

If you still use the laptop on the go or have another use for it thats fine but theres no point in building a new system and just having your laptop sit there. Sell the laptop if your not gonna use it, otherwise i know many people who have both a desktop and a laptop.

If you want to play PC games you should go for it. Hell I have 2 desktops and a notebook. Some times 1 machine just isn't enough. GO FOR IT.

Not stupid, better. Gaming laptops are very expensive and I don't see how a serious pc gamer would use one exclusively. They hardly compare to a decent desktop in performance let alone price. Blu-ray drives are pretty cheap now, can get ones that also play hd dvd's which are like $5 since they don't make them anymore for ~$150 or less. Even if your parts were from a desktop, it would definitely be time to at least get a new card, even the $100 9800gt will destroy the 7900gs, so well worth getting a new pc imo.

8 computers in my house altogether, XD
the two desktops in the study room are kinda for nothing, but there both old and there good to have for when friends come over to play CSS or CoD4

Haha, well that's overkill (no offense)! But there's nothing wrong with having a desktop and a laptop, and I saw a Lite-On Blu-Ray drive for 100 in Neweggs email ad yesterday. If you have the money, go for it, it's fun to build a PC.

I would definitely go for the biggest, best, craziest, coolest downright badass rig you can afford! And laugh as it destroys Crysis Warhead and Farcry 2 with sheer unmoderated maniacal mirth! And if you do decide to build a new one, I'd enjoy giving you ideas on what to use! :D

Well that's more like it!

I was thinking of either using an ATI 4850 or 9800GTX. Probably the 4850 because I get it discounted (work at Circuit City). We don't carry 9800GTXs. Also, I saw the Lite-On drive as well, and will definately be getting it.

My only question is that would this be a good base to start from in building? It's very cheap:

It's got everything I need minus the sound, video, and monitor. And that's the stuff I like to pick out myself.

If I were you, I'd go for an Intel Socket LGA775 - purely because the Intel Core 2 architecture is awesome, and their processors clock faster than AMD ones at similar speeds (example - a Core 2 Duo E8500 3.0GHz will clock faster than an AMD Athlon X2 6000+ 3.0GHz).

To be honest, I'd go for the various bundles pasted all over the US PC market at the moment - stuff like the ASUS P5Q being bundled with the Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 is a common one, as well as the ASUS P5K Premium Wifi-AP. If you're wanting more DDR3 action, you can't go wrong with the ASUS Rampage Extreme X48, or the Foxconn BLACKOPS (man, I LOVE that board!). The general rule of thumb is; if you can bring yourself to build it yourself (which isn't too difficult if you follow the instructions the motherboard and case come with, and various tutorials on how to mount fans, etc etc), it comes to quite a bit cheaper than either a prebuilt or a barebones.

What sorta cash are you looking to spend? The HD4850 is a brilliant start, by the way (I love the HD4000 series, they're the best since ATI's good old RADEON 9800 Pro!) and whether you're wanting to spend $700 or $3000, there's a build out there that can run your favourite games and still have lots of room for overclocking, upgrading and extreme tweaking. :)

I have $700-$800 to build. Keep in mind I need $150-$200 for a 20-22in. monitor. BTW, I've tried configuring PC's from the ground up, but the barebones are always cheaper for some reason...

I would sell the laptop and get a netbook, then E7200/4GB/4850 or 9800gtx+/corsair 520W/Asus, Biostar or Gigabyte P45 board/LG 22'' monitor.

No, if you buy high/top-end parts now, they'll be outdated and alot cheaper in 2 months, and you'll be cursing yourself for doing it. Buy mid/high end parts to get the best Performance/Money ratio. Why don't you go start a thread about your new PC and we'll give you a hand, as he said? We can make a list of parts there and update them as we go.
