Imna try and succinctly summarize my many feelings on this beta in a few words. I have to say overall I do have fun playing this game and am still strongly considering purchasing it when it comes out.
I've been rolling deep in shooters for well over a decade. My all-time shooter of choice was Counter-Strike, first 1.6 then the Source version (I had the very first CS beta 1.0 way back!) I also love the Battlefield series, though I haven't had the chance to play 4 yet. COD game mechanics and gamefeel have never been my favorite. I always felt as though COD sacrificed core mechanics in the interest of accessibility. Contrarily, I played the hell out of MW2 on xbox and enjoyed myself quite a bit. I own no COD games past MW2 because I played enough of that game to get franchise fatigue. This game still feels remarkably like a COD game, in terms of run and gun mechanics. The things I hate about COD games are alive and well in this game. That includes:
-Random spawning. This was mentioned above - I feel and have always felt the fact that you can spawn "randomly" throughout the map, with a high likelihood of spawning behind or around someone who just cleared the area you're in, is garbage. This ruined a lot of the fun for me in COD, and detracted substantially from the skill involved.
-Mechanics which, in my opinion, are kinda more about accessibility than about core skill. Stuff like "burn cards" (I think of these like "perks" from COD), and things like an auto-targeting pistol. I love the look, the art, the animation, and the idea of the auto-targeting pistol, especially in a sci-fi context, but I think it sucks in a skill-based FPS game, and the developers commented that it enhances accessibility to new players more than anything else. I'd love to see it in a sci-fi movie though.
-The ever-present "he who sees first kills first" flow of action. If you've played shooters outside of the COD series you know what I'm talking about. This feels present enough, although it bothers me less the more I play the beta. The parkour stuff helps mix it up a bit.
I'm also really on the fence about the bot issue. It makes the battlefield feel more populated, but shooting bots in lieu of players is incredibly unsatisfying. I've had instances where, forced to make a split second decision between two targets, I targeted a bot and was immediately shredded by a player in the same vicinity. As I play more I get a better feel for recognizing who's who.
I understand the need to make this 6v6... too many players with too many titans would be ridiculous. Though it seems to me the solution would be to make epic maps ? Maybe this sounds "typical" being that I'm a guy who much prefers Battlefield over COD, but I kinda wish this was Battlefield with mechs, rather than COD with mechs.
All of that said, I am having a lot of fun playing this beta. It feels pretty balanced and polished for what it is, and I want to play more. So strongly considering purchasing this on xbox 360 (it'll overheat my laptop!!)
