Who cares? It still gives you a baseline to compare one card to another. While the FPS #s are off the rankings and general difference between the cards is generally correct.
And Yeah I played Oblivion for months on a 6800GT at 1280x1024and it was really good. But I played it in bloom with medium settings and grass turned all the way off. It was totally unplayable in HDR and with max settings that probably wouldn't be too far off.
I hope you all realize they are testing each cards with everything but AA at max, i have sent them many of e-mails concerning their charts. and having owned an X800 and 6800 Ultra in my life i can say trying to run at those settings with everything on high is near impossible. I find Tom's Hardware very reliable when comparing video cards. mrhankeydinks
Yup if I would have tried to max every setting except AA and have HDR on in 1280x1024 on my old 6800GT I dont know if it would have even loaded up, and if it had it probably would have been like 3 or 4 FPS. So I dont think that card's #s are that far off.

I don't see anything wrong with those numbers, but I guess I'm a n00b. What's the problem with them?Yura_NarsoleRead closer,there's no way a 8600GTS can beat a 7900GTX.

Oblivion has always run way, way better on ATI cards than Nvidia cards. Look at the whole list it is constant from the top to the bottom that much lesser ATI cards are beating much faster NVIDIA cards but that is just in Oblivion. Change the game on this Tom's list and you will see that it is more alone the line of what you would expect. Oblivion always runs MUCH better on ATI.

its optimized for ati cards and with their higher amount of shaders they do typically run oblivion much better.

He's got a good point.
I've seen some people here recommending cards based on the Tom's Hardware charts, and they're simply ill informed. Like the blind leading the blind.
Nice finds, Indestructible2.
I use Tom's benchmarks along with any others that I can find. And if you guys think toms are so bad please dazzle us all by posting some benchmarks form other reputable sites that have drastically different times. People who just come on and say "oh Tom's sucks, you don't know anything" but then don't provide alternate benchmarks are the dumbest ones of all.
Hey Wesker whats your avy from?Indestructible2
It's Slash from his Guns N' Roses days. :D Awesome band before Axl Rose messed it all up. :(
Store24, everyone with hardware knowledge has known that Tom's Hardware is a joke. WHy do you think all other hardware sites avoid making a chart list/archive? Other tech sites know that over time, things change that will affect the outcome of performance. Faster CPUs will be released, more efficient motherboards will be released and improved drivers all affect performance.
Tom's Hardware is a joke of a site now, especially their VGA charts. Their forums are also a sad place where people often use the charts as reference.
Stick to normal/up to date benchmarks on other sites.

Yeah got the wrong link here is the toms. http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=858&model2=713&chart=295
So do you care to stop talking trash and explain your stance?
Here are the Prey Benchmarks -
AnandTech (scrool down to the 2nd for 4xAA)- http://anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2970&p=7
Toms - http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=854&model2=726&chart=301
Considering they are most defiantly not using the same CPU the very minor differences between the two test would suggest both are accurate depending on what else they have.
8600GTS got 39FPS on Anandteck and 32 on Toms.
8600GT got 31 on Anandteck and 25 on toms.
The fact that the difference between the two is almost exactly the same on both test show they are both correct. Like I said in the very beginning even if the #s are not perfect Toms is a good guide to see the difference between cards and that is VERY true!
Well here you go, using your own site against you.

The only difference is that Anandtech used ultra high settings without AA+AF, tomshardware used 4AA+8AF and that is true, oblivion is more shader intensive. The 8600gts> 7950gt> 8600gt is known everywhere. what people are laughing at stuff like "x850xt is performing better than the 7800gtx".

Well here are the Anandtech Oblivion benches, they dont have the X850XT but they do have the X1800XT and it is just about exactly the same difference from the 7800GTX that Toms shows even though the nubers are different.
Anandtech - http://www.anandtech.com/showdoc.aspx?i=2746&p=4
Toms - http://www23.tomshardware.com/graphics_2007.html?modelx=33&model1=854&model2=726&chart=296
Again I'm not seeing any glaring differences between these two tests. Certainly nothing to just blast Toms over, if anything this again just supports the accuracy of toms.
And to the two name callers, do you see how I'm doing this? I'm actually providing links to actual benchmark pages and talking about the numbers in a rational manner. Not just throwing out general site names and saying "your a noob because these guys are better". I'm actually comparing them line for line, something you apparently have not actually done.

the x1800xt performing better than the 7800gtx, not surprised, tomshardware may show some correct benchies, but some of their benchmarks are totally wrong or mistaken.
Do you really think that a X800xt would destroy totally a 7800gtx? and its not a small difference, its a 15% performance difference.
What a thread. I read the whole thing, and I have to admit, Indestructible you look like a fool right now. Store shows you the numbers from anandtech that back up Toms, and all you say is:

Basically you say nothing and insult him personally?
Listen Indestructible, the performance of graphics cards depends alot on the games and the settings said games are run on. Just saying that "7600 GT SHOULD BEAT A 6800 ULTRA IN DOOM 3" doesn't really mean anything. Especially since like someone else mentioned doom3 depends alot on piplines.
I'd be happy to change my mind if YOU, indestructible, provided some proof in the form of benchmarks from other sites that contradict Toms charts.
But as of now, you look pretty silly.

No I'm sure that one is wrong. But that's probably because its a really old card and a mistake was made. The point is that for the vast majority of current cards that are actually on the market and people can actually still buy Tom's VGA guide certainly provides an acceptable margin of error between all of them to give you a good idea of how they compare against each other.
All benchmarks are going to be off of each other a little bit because of all the other hardware being used in the tests but as you can see when actually looking and Anadtech Vs. Toms both are very good. The funny thing is I have never been a big Tom's fan, I just use it as a very general guide. But by comparing it to Anandtech it has actually made me trust it a little more than I did before.
So this whole thread is pretty silly.

Bingo, this happens when a simple confusion is made, at first i thought you were a bit insane defending all the tomshardware benchies, but when you mentioned the 8600gts, 7950gt and 8600gt and not mentioning that the x800xt or the x800gto performing at better or same speeds as a 7800gtx then i say this was a total misunderstanding. xD
