By my count they're less frequent than they were just a few years ago, but the big titles still seem to be WWII-based, e.g., Company of Heroes, Medal of Honor, Silent Hunter, and Call of Duty.

I don't see too much wrong with it, actually. Because there are so many WWII games, in order to stand out from the crowd and be successful a developer is really going to have to do something really remarkable that will, in turn, actually make the game interesting to play. It's also an easy way for a developer to get recognized and receive feedback on a new engine or graphics design from the gaming community before launching into a new project; e.g., Battlefield 1942 becoming Battlefield 2142, or the development of the Combat Mission series from Beyond Overlord (meh) to Shock Force (at least looks impressive). It's simple business: You go with the tried-and-true model to build up your infrastructure before spinning off into something less certain.

But, yeah, it got boring a good long time ago.

i don't think so, but many ww2 games are serialised franchises so there seems to be way more than there is

i mean, cut medal of honour out and you've got, what, four world war 2 games left in the world?

i'm joking of course, but really, there's the commandos games (3 or 4), the call of duty games (2 and expansion), the medal of honour games (several thousand), the brothers in arms games (2, going on three) and company of heroes (1)

there's about a dozen games over those series, but they're mostly great - so that's great

the rest i ignore

i don't think there are too many, just too many bad ones - the same is true of all settings though, and all genres

They would not actually be that repetiative if they had some different settings and armys, and not america all the time. how about africa? italy, japan, or different battles in russia. playing as the germans would be a nice change, or maybe the japanese.

I have played the same online WWII game for the past 4 years. I have tried many of the other ones over the years...

I keep going back to D-Day Normandy. One of the first WWII FPS, Originally a Quake 2 mod, now a full standalone with continued development. The gameplay is ideal for fast pace action.

Try it. Be warned:  It's like a drug.

D-Day Normandy is class based with 9 unique classes.

It also has German, US, Great Britain, Japanese, Russian, Polish and soon to be released Italian teams. All with unique, accurate weapons and player models/skins, shouts and models.

I doubt i will ever play a diferent online fps.

Yes. I am one of it's current developers. :) It's a free game and none of us get paid..lol. But, it helps the game if i promote it when i can. Since it was never a commercial game...it didn't get widespread advertisement. If you didn't enter the right key words, you would have a hard time finding it.

You can copy and paste the address that's below in my signature, for the installation program.
