that's just what i've been saying ever since i saw the screens, it's all too bright and colourful and cartoony - it totally belies the tone and theme of what, i at least feel, the game should be heading for
the art style especially reminds me of red alert 2, which may or may not have something to do with dustin browder (worked on c&c and bfme) as lead designer
i'm not the biggest starcraft fan to begin with, or a huge blizzard fan, but i'm still confident that it'll be a cool game
I'venever played Starcraft before so I don't know what the fuss is about, but when you have the sequel to apparently one of the best strategy games, people are bound to have small issues with things not being how they want them to be.-Unreal-
Well I guess with enough feedback, they may change it to be more grisly and dark.
The siege tank looks like a kids toy atm.Â
ya still time to change..but when you see on starcraft 1 it is dark and a little sad theme...but this looks like happy hour..I think that all the Terran characters looks bad.. I like zerg they seem pretty much the same just more of them and that rocks..protoss is OK..but need some improvements..but love the shield stuff it looks really good.. so lets hope for the best and some dimmer look. they and less colourmetallica_one

I don't know what Starcraft you were playing, but the one I was playing looks very very similar.Â

if Blizzard wants to make this right, they must at least re-texture the engine. it looks way too bright and everything looks like plastic instead of metal. and take those stupid shields away from the space marines.....and definitely redraw the siege tank model.

you are calling this dark and colourless? yeah. obviously... it's only missing rainbow from it anymore
when I am watching the trailer it looks really cool..! and I am happy about almost everything.. there is 2 things I don't like, Terran is to cartoon alike I think and it is to much color.....what do you guys think?
metallica_one
Ya, Terran look cartoony but they looked that way in Starcraft 1 as well...didnt seem to bother anyone.
As for color, I dont think you can have too much. I Loved the green scenery with the multiple armies on it.
Man, I'm tottaly dissapointed from what I've seen so far, just another classic RTS with resource gathering and base building. Now, I don't have anything against that, but from this it seems they won't put even one innovative moment in the game, they are playing on safe card, not something I expected from Blizzard ever to do... Graphic are too colorful, yea, but it isn't so bad. Marines carry shields, WTF? That's incredibly stupid, and most of the units don't look cool as they used to in the original... They even didn't bother introducing a new faction... From what I see this'll be a great letdown for Blizzard, unless they change something radically. I was (and I am) a huge fan of Starcraft, so this is not some Starcraft hate, it's simply opinion of someone who want's best for this game, but Blizzard isn't the same anymore...:(
P.S. Perhaps this isn't a right topic but I had to say this somwhere.Â
Well, aren't you all a bit too harsh with the first impresions? It's only a beta, changes will happen; however the actual style isn't pretty bad, although I also believe it's a bit shiny when it should be more gloomy and dark (only the Terrans). And also, none of us haven't seen yet Zerg infected terrain, and even Zerg structures.
Give'em a breath of air, and be patient.Â

Well that's partly true, but do you think there is any way to split from a path that it's very consolidated and I think that following the path of a RTS will inevitably go to a point like that. In basis, all are the same, and what is posible thinking about refreshing the genre? Even C&C3 had this problems. Even with cool and pretty graphics, and a good physics engine, the game faulted of this.
And it's not the game that it's getting to the old formula, is the genre itself that it's becoming old and commonly used. If you think of it, you'll see that the RTS genre has evolutionated faster than what you think.
I think the best is to cross diferent genres, like Savage, that combined FPS with RTS.

Well that's true, but it was only an example of crossing diferent genres. But the idea of crossing genres in order to innovate is very interesting, at least, from my point of view.
About the races, while it's not a Mutated-Panda-Assassin with tentacles and billion cannons... ooooops @@Â

YES the game must be realistic and use only 23 shades of brown! /sacrasmÂ
All Blizzard games look cartooney. To me this was fine when we all had crappy PC's with Geforce 4's and stuff but now that the technology is here and some games actually try to improve the graphics, I think that Starcraft2 looks outdated, especially compared to the other games. Well, on the screenshots atleast. There's still a 0.000173 percent chance that they will get rid of the cartooney look but I highly doubt that.
Personally I think the game is going to suck because they will stick to the formula of the original game. C&C3 did that too and look what happend to that game... I stopped playing Starcraft (and C&C) for a reason. I got bored of it's gameplay because there are new games that use more innovative and unique gameplay which makes those games more interesting and fun.
About the RTS genre. The old RTS games were always about fighting, fighting, fighting and more fighting. Now RTS games are combined with other genres, like for example: FPS/RTS, 4X/RTS, RPG/RTS. Those other genres add something to the basic RTS model which makes the game more interesting. The basic RTS game is actually kind of boring in my opinion. I've already played hundreds of basic RTS games. However, those combined genres are pretty interesting because they try to improve the genre by adding new things. It's like a better version. Why play that old RTS model when you can get something new which is more interesting and fun? Oh yeah, I forgot. It's Starcraft so you HAVE TO play it. I think that's the only reason why people will play and like the game. Because it's Starcraft, the game that WAS revolutionary. If Starcraft2 uses the same formula, how can it be revolutionary and have the same impact that Starcraft1 had?

That may be true but if you look at other RTS games, it brings nothing new, nothing special. It's like they didn't bother improving the game. It's like the hundreds of Medal of Honor games. It's just another RTS. Actually, it's Generals with new skins...

You are asking for them to fix something that isn't broke. Major deviations of the formula are best used in new IPs, that's why Relic made Company of Heroes instead of completely changing their Warhammer series, current series should improve on what made them great in the first place.

Not exactly. COH is much different from DOW. Even if it would've been the same, it wouldn't have mattered much because there are not many (maybe none at all) other games that use the same formula. Besides, DOW's/COH's gameplay is pretty unique at this moment. The Starcraft formula on the other hand has been used by hundreds of other games.
I can't help but feel maps will be small and unit badly scaled, just at the battle cruiser vs the fighter. the dragon look as big as a building. hopefully all of this will be in archived XML files, i hopet3h_MarK

I can see that but the complaint is viable one because unlike Warcraft which was orcs and elves and what not Starcraft had a lot more gritty feel to it. It felt like an actual war was being fought. As cartoonish graphics would take away from the atmosphere of the original game.Â

Actually, it's alpha.
Just for reference, this is what Starcraft looked like in Alpha

I like the look, colors are nice. I think what you guys are trying to say though, is that the Terran's team color red was too bright of a red, it will probably be toned down more like it was in SC1, but you still need color. The protoss were fine too, just maybe make the color slightly less bright (execpt for weapons and lights of course)
