I'm looking to upgrade my (very old) graphics card. I've got an older rig (Athlon 64 X2 5000+, 4GB RAM) and I want to know at which point have I purchased too much GPU for my CPU to handle. Is that possible? I'm thinking about the SAPPHIRE 100358L Radeon HD 7770 GHz Edition as that's about the maximum amount I would want to spend. And for the trolls and flamers, I did search the forums for a few minutes before asking.

While that card might be overkill for that CPU, it should still be worthy of using, should you end up with a new CPU at a later time. If it helps you get better details and a better framerate out of your current machine, then it's not really a waste.

Id go for the 7750 if i was you and save yourself some money, you won't see a difference because that cpu will bottleneck that 7770, it will bottlneck that 7750 too but it will be abysmal.

Depends if you are going to buy a better cpu anyway than get something more serious like a 7850 or better otherwise 7750/70 will do.

It just means when you get round to upgrading your CPU you'll see an even bigger performance jump.

I did something similar with an older athlon 64x2 system I had a few months back. I installed a 7750 into it and whilst I did notice an improvement, I wasn't huge. So I ditched the cpu, got an i3 3rd gen mobo and ram bundle, with the 7750 and the change was immense. Hope that helps and good luck!

Yeah. My son was rocking the same Athlonx2 5xxx series( Brisbane I think), and I got him a 6850, which was bottlenecked severely in certain games. The am2 board didn't have a wealth of upgrade options, so I decided to get him a Phenom x3, which I wasn't sure if it would make a big difference, but it did. He runs most games on medium to high, which is fine for him.
