http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/format-war/every-99-hd-dvd-player-losing-500-319172.php They are losing more than $500 on each one! Where do they expect to get that money back? Since they never get much money off the hardware anyways, is the HD DVD camp that desperate?

You have to ask yourselves this:  How much does it actually cost to put an HDDVD player together?  If it's only $50, they're making a hell of a profit.

Meh, some people will buy, doesnt mean the majority of people will, just means 'some' people will. Is that deal in the UK? And if it is, I have not noticed. Especially seeing as you can't get HDDVD in as many places as you can Bluray. Toshiba seriously needs its own shop if it intends to market its products better. At least with bluray I can pop into the nearby Sony shop and pick one up.

They must be desperate if they're doing that and paying off Paramount. But it's a pretty good gamble though. If only the HD-DVD's were themselves cheap too.

I don't think so...

Toshiba is using outdated PC components (a1.6Ghz Pentium 4 PC ) plus a HD-DVD-ROM. I think they are using 150$ of components to make a hd-dvd player.

Yeah it definitely does not cost $500 to put together the A2/A3.

Well obviously there're no Toshiba stores, but I think most people who buy high def format discs usually go to places like Best Buy, Futureshop, online stores, etc., where both formats would be equally available. I don't think there's that much of a difference in the availability of the discs for you to buy. It's more of an issue of what movies you can get on what format.

The numbers they used for that article are over a year old. Production costs fall over time. That article is BS.

It's actually costs around 50$ to manufacture the HD-A2.
