I haven't ordered by CPU yet because the one I was looking at was out of stock, but it got removed from the site :x

Should I get a triple core 2.4ghz?

Link

or dual core 3.0ghz?

I'll be buying a heatsink with the dual core if I get it so I'll be able to overclock right away

Look into which triple core Phenom II x3 can be unlocked into a full fledged Phenom II x4. That would something to consider, but it may cost $20-$30 more for the correct CPU...

Thats a toughy, I have the same cpu. But you will need to buy a descent cpu cooler for the X2 because it pumps out alot of heat. The AMD Phenom 8750 would be the better buy because its a newer cpu, three cores, comes with cpu cooler and has more cache.

i would go with the triple core phenom. also when you grab a better heatsink you should try to overclock the 8750...it should be able to reach 2.8ghz at least. im comparing this to my 9500 which i cant get any higher than 2.6 without stabiliity problems. 3 cores running at 2.8 is better than 2 at 3ghzplus the bigger cache on the 8750

Keep in mind your need a motherboard that supports ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration) though.

don't get either both are old and not very good much better dual http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103687 much better tri http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103683 there is a move towards, multithreaded apps so I'd go with the tri I listed but if that is to much go with the dual I listed, the first gen phenom and athlon 64x2 are both terrible by comparison. If you are doing any video/rendering you will want the tri, for current games the dual will mostly be faster with the exception of a few new games like fc2 and gta4.

true but any board that can run a phenom can run a phenom 2. you need am2+ for both, but the athlon 64 x2 will run in plain old am2. you may need a bios update though.

that doesn't make any sense, if the 4th core works why did they disable it and sell it for less?

Why don;t you just get the 550 with an unlocked multi? If it's out of your budget I would just get the X2 240 its a little bit weaker than the three you mentioned but it should be a little bit cheaper. If you want the best performence CPU of the three you mentioned get the 545

Can't go over 100 dollars with the cpu. I also mentioned 2 more on first post.

The ones you mentioned of the first post are crap. The first phenom series were a disaster for AMD and the X2 6000 is like an oven and doesnt perform well.
