trying to choose one. What has good population and what is good with events team based dungeons and such. I do not mind paying a month because i can just get the time cards. Do not say WoW because i do not like it too boring. I played GW for a long time and loved it. Alot of people have told me rift is a strong mmo with alot of good things to it. Guild wars 2 people have told me its free but the population is slowly dieing. Help me guys! Thanks!

GW 2 is indeed going down, you will have a slight problem finding people in lower areas right now, but it's great to explore, if you want it get it now till the entire world except the major cities will be completely empty, as for Rift, get WoW. Not sure what you expect from a MMO, but these are not action games, if WoW is boring which is in fact the only good MMO out there, with EvE 2nd and that is several levels extra of "boring", then you won't really find MMOs worth playing, unless you want Asian MMOs that are so awesome, so "not" boring that you'll find them boring an hour later.

If you're not a WoW fan, I'd have to recommend GW2.

I much prefer RIFT. GW2 is one of the most boring games i've ever played.

WORDS ! There's no MMO better than WoW right now. And WoW, in my oppinion, stopped being a good MMO since Wrath of the lich king expansion came out. I haven't played Mists of Pandaria yet, and i think i'm not even going to. You can try Allods. I don't know how good it is, i've played it for about 10 hours and got bored of it. They say it is a copy of WoW, and i tend to agree with that, but ... you cand try it, i don't know. Unless you like Asian-Style-MMOs, you don't really have much to choose from. The only MMO that i liked more than WoW was MU Online, which became crap aswell, few years ago, with season 4 "expansion" . It had kinda crap combat, but the community made me love the game.

Since you didnt like WoW, chances are you might not enjoy RIFT. They are kinda similar. RIFT is better but still.

GW2 is so-so. Certainly a huge step down from GW1, but not exactly a bore either.

I disagree. EVE Online, GW2, TSW and RIFT are all better than WoW.

You can't compare WoW with EVE Online. In terms of gameplay mechanics, possibilities, storyline, and playerbase, i think WoW is the best. I might be wrong, of course.

With the exception of possibilities (WoW is one of the msot restricted mmos I have played). Those are your opinion, thus, you can't be wrong. Furthermore WoW certainly is the smoothest mmo I have played and probably the most polished, so the mechanics are good.

That said. WoW certainly doesnt have the storyline or quality of content that The Secret World does, or the Quantity of relevant content that RIFT does. WoW also has less viable builds than both of those games and RIFT improves at a MUCH faster rate than WoW. Of course, improving faster than WoW is not a hard thing. WoW is one of the most stagnant mmos I have played.

When trash improves, it's visible, when gold tries to get more refined, nobody is going to notice, shame sandboxes will not be at a decent quality or at least trying to improve, since that's your "suffering".

Did anyone here bring up sandboxes?

I know that I was comparing WoW to other themeparks which have improved at a much faster rate than WoW.

That's the reason you entered this thread, to give us some of your Blizzard hate and to bring some arguments that you heard over the internet (having not played any of their games) throwing the word "opinion" to hide a complete lie or fantasy.

Other "themeparks" have improved, because they had things to improve, WoW was at its finest since the first game and it, as a MMO, evolved with the needs of its players, turning it into something with more action on gratification and less of a grind, a job, while adding from time to time new things to mess around with, like pet battles in MoP, unlike any other MMO out there, WoW only needs to bring new content, in its expansions.

GW2 is pretty active, and there are always a major, free update to look forward to every month. it's also got pretty good dungeons, although the dungeon finding tools are rather lacking (there are workarounds though, like entire websites dedicated to it).

2 Servers are high. Sure the rest are full or very high, but 2 servers are still high, and that is proof that the game is going down.

here's an example of one of the monthly updates in GW2.

and here's the official page (not yet updated as of writing) of the event. you can click and see what was done in november and october (though it doesn't actually include all the new stuff added), and you can see they already have plans for january.

hmmm....let me think for a second.

OK, Rift is similar to WoW in a lot of way but feels very different imo. It's also got a huge amount of content and it's free to play to lvl 20 I think.

GW2 is different but not very fun imo and if you're into "end-game" stuff then GW2 is not the game for you.

I would try out Rift, it's a pretty good mmo imo.

My experience with Rift and GW2 is very polar. GW2 was one of my highly anticipated releases, but i am a bit disappointed in it. It is very different from other MMOs. My cons for GW2 may be pros to some people but i will explain. There is no sense of progression in GW2. Sure you level up and everything but as you progess, you don't feel any stronger since your power scales to where ever you are. Also the gear's progression aesthetically was kind of a let down. As you level up, you should start to look more and more bad ass(from weak looking armor to better looking armor as you level up.) It feels as though my level 10 armor looks the same as my level 20-30 and so on.

Also the dungeons of GW2 are pretty challenging which is a plus. The problem is that it feels so chaotic that its hard to keep track of everything. Plus there are no real roles so you are kind of unsure of what you should be doing. Like elementalists can create area combos which do different things depending on which element they are using, but which should they use? Should you AOE or single target dps? How do you deal with enemy attacks if the aggro cycles through each player? I have not delved too deep in spvp. The WvWvW battles are just full on zerg fights. Even with these cons, the game is still a fun game. Just without the sense of accomplishment i guess?

I found rift to be much more enjoyable. I enjoyed that each piece boosted my stats and made a difference. The gear models also change drastically as you level up. You felt stronger as you progressed. Dungeon runs were very fun, but heres a warning, people are impatient. Since rift is kind of old, people expect you to know how to run each boss. Stick with dps or heals your first run through a dungeon. You can't go wrong with either game actually. If progression is important, stick with Rift.

I truly never (and will never) understand the whole "Oh look, that MMO is dying, all hail WoW and let it burn in hell" It's great to have so many MMOs on the market, and I want most of them to do well. Sure, some will do better than others, but I want the choice. For example I have 3 MMOs installed right now: SWTOR, GW2 and The Secret World. 3 Totally different MMOs with different lore and settings. If I feel like SciFi, SWTOR. If I feel like fantasy, GW2. I want modern realistic setting, TSW. I just wish I had more time to play them.

The world is coming closer and closer to being completely empty except cities and that is pretty much limited to LA and pvp. They do not deliver, they do not fix stuff, they do not do anything, they work on these events instead of making a better game, events end up being trash anyway with lots of problems and if that isn't making enough players quit, Nexon is, the company that is in charge of monetizing GW 2, if you want to get some gold in the near future you are forced to buy gems and each new event gets more and more limited to the cash shop, instead of fixing bugs they waste time on destroying any kind of noticeable reward from quests or anything. It had potential, but the game is turning into garbage and they don't seem to want to stop, not that Nexon knows the notion of that word, when did they not crash their games due to excessive cash shops. Nexon wants something and Anet has to follow their command and that is to make money and stop anything that might be fun in the game, all that is left with is terrible dungeons, mediocre pvp and exploration, nothing else, first is irrelevant and you'll waste more time not joining a dungeon when you want to join a dungeon, exploration is sad with the world being empty all you're left with is PvP.

Plenty of people running around in noob zones and in high level zones on Ring of Fire server. I cant see the others being much different. There has been a drop in the player numbers over the past few months though but thats due to the massive crack down on botters.

Nice excuse, but for your information bots are pretty active and are more obvious and unpunished than ever, that's a terrible excuse, various zones being empty because they banned some bots.

That's sad cause it's a great fun game. The only thing that put me off a bit was (like another poster said) the gear progression. I love to venture out and find stuff, and then look more badass as I go along. WoW had this but after a while everyone looked the same so I quit. LOTRO also did this pretty well. Is there ANY MMO that does gear really well?

Noted BSC, kudos. For the OP I have played each of these games a ton and I will say neither is going to be as fun for a new player today as they were when they were shiny and new. GW2 and Rift both were a blast at release leveling up with the entire population, doing rifts on one side and GW2 events on the other. Each was a blast with a ton of people to play with, now either would be boring. Saying that for the solo leveling experience you are going to have to endure I would say GW2 will give you the most fun and the fastest progression. Rift has a more robust end game, but it is going to be a grind to get there and basically is a grind once you do get there as well. Not to mention you now have to endure 10 extra levels to get to the NEW endgame as nearly no one is running the old 50 dungeons anymore, not like they used to anyway. I played Rift and had three max toons, left there and went to GW2 and leveled two toons to 80. It was a blast and I had fun with it, but I returned back to Rift when the new expansion came out to pound out one of my 50's to level 60. The greatest thing about this is I can return to GW2 at will without having to resub, when there is a new event I can just pop my head in and play, or whenever else I feel like it.

Bottom line, for a new player I have to say GW2 is going to give you the most fun.

Stupid to compare ANY MMO these days to WoW.

WOW came out at the special moment where MMOs were just starting to become popular.

These days you get a new MMO every 3 weeks, and the playstyle has changed for gamers.

You could bring out WoW2 and players would still move onto the new thing a month after.

I played Guild Wars 2 quite a bit in the past week and I have barely seen any bots at all, if any.

Guild Wars 2 is fine populationwise. And I am one of those who expected it to do terribly after a few months. The population has decreased somewhat since launch. But the game's retention rate was much better than I had expected.

GW2 is my first MMO, and I have to say it's the game of the year for me.

I usually run around solo try to get 100% completion on each area I discover, and that alone is worth it.

I have to say, it's one of the most beautiful games I've played.

I highly recommend it, even if the population is dying down, it's still one great adventure.

But you do this to non Blizzard MMOs all time. Since he didn't even mention sandboxes you were obviously trying to start a fight. Just your cr@p.

EDIT: Well I derpa herped, he did start it. :| I don't take it back though; in the mid-years when I was trying multiple f2P MMOs blizzard fanboys would invade their forums and talk about how much they s**k and they copy WoW. Since they're gone I'm going take my angry on you, jerk. :x

[QUOTE="FelipeInside"]Is GW2 really going down or just typical GS Forum Talk to look cool? Every time I log in there's heaps of people playing. I haven't logged in for a couple of weeks but that wouldn't make a big difference.

Its having the problem all linear MMOs have now: Low level areas are dead because everyone is at level cap doing whatever the latest thing is. You need more than achievements to get people to keep going back to lower level content. In Runescape (the only sandbox-ish MMO, I played for what it's worth) progression wasn't a straight line, so you saw plenty of people in plenty of areas because quests/dailies/etc/ require going back and fourth all other the place and there many areas had a mix of high and low level content. This seems like it is going be an innate problem with linear MMOs unless someone can come up with a system that would make people want to go back to lowerlevel zones regularly.

WOW tried that with Cataclysm, revamped all the lower areas. Don't know if it worked or not. (I didn't play it)

Not even GW2 with its upscaled reward makes people wanna go back to low level areas. This is because low level areas still dont reward high level characters enough, and that design choice so that materials only appear for the tier they are designed for. Which is awfully gamey, and really does a good job making sure that you are a prisoner of your level.

It should be worth mentioning that RIFT has a free, unlimited trial.

[QUOTE="DanielDust"]That's the reason you entered this thread, to give us some of your Blizzard hate and to bring some arguments that you heard over the internet (having not played any of their games) throwing the word "opinion" to hide a complete lie or fantasy.Kell_the_Gamer

True, I did reply to the WoW post that said that WoW is the best mmo despite this being a thread between RIFT and GW2.

BUT I did not enter this thread to discuss WoW, I came here to discuss that both GW2 and RIFT might not be worth it, seeing as GW2 is a bit too dumbed down compared to the prequel, and RIFT is a bit too similar to a game he doesnt like. While I am no blizzard hater, I do give them **** when they mess up.

Or maybe most gamers just don't know how to appreciate what each brings? I still have lots of fun with GW2, get scared and immersed into TSW, and follow the story and characters of SWTOR. I think some gamers these days are just too picky personally.

Dude, you really should change your avatar if you want anyone to take you seriously when you speak of WoW.

The majority of revamped zones are great fun.. The only problem I can say about them is level too fast to the point you quickly outlevel the content of the zone missing out on at least half of its content.

No it isnt. Did you check the server select?

2 Servers are high. Sure the rest are full or very high, but 2 servers are still high, and that is proof that the game is going down.

DanielDust

Plenty of people running around in noob zones and in high level zones on Ring of Fire server. I cant see the others being much different. There has been a drop in the player numbers over the past few months though but thats due to the massive crack down on botters.

Nice excuse, but for your information bots are pretty active and are more obvious and unpunished than ever, that's a terrible excuse, various zones being empty because they banned some bots.

Im guessing by your attitude you thaught you replying to the person before me... Anyway It wasnt an excuse nor did I say anything about zones being empty because of bot bannings. Learn to read. I play quite regularly and I havent seen a single bot since the fractals update.

You don't play enough then, or you sit in LA and talk about bots that obviously will never be there, because everyone else sees them and complains about them. It's pretty idiotic to say the numbers went down hard because some bots were banned and yes that is and was directed at you.

The only idiot here is you kiddo. Do yourself a favor and grow up, instead of talking out of your arse and arguing with people on internet forums because they like a different game to you.
