I recently received a Sherwood ST-887R turntable and I need to buy a receiver and speakers but i dont know what to look for. My friend says i can take the red and white RCA cables and just plug them into an ordinary shelf system but I thought you needed phono inputs.
Another thing is that along with the 2 RCA cables my turntable has this other cable that i dont know what it is. Any help is greatly appreciated, I just want to listen to some old vinyls. Thanks

Most modern receivers do not have a phono pre amp, so depending on your purchase you may need one. Also that 3rd cable is most likely a ground. Anyways what sort of budget are you on?

If you have your heart set on a receiver without a Phono input, consider a Phono Preamp. I cannot recommend a specific model, but it will allow you to connect your turntable to most any receiver. Otherwise your receiver choices are limited.

Good luck,

Did you mean to say less than $250? As in "< $250" ? or did you mean more than $250?

You mentioned you had $250 for a receiver and speakers? To recommend something appropriate, it might help if we knew what this was for; are you doing DJ work? Listening at home? Is this going to be your primary stereo system? Are you planning to use this for home theater? Music only? Your PC?

The more information you provide, the better equipment we can recommend! :D

Happy gaming,

The receiver would just be for the record player and only to listen to music in my bedroom; nothing else. So it doesnt have to be too fancy
