The close up on those flowers at the beggining is the most photo-realistic stuffin the whole demo.

I am confused...I thought 3.0 was what they were using all long this gen? Either way the engine looks very beautiful no doubt. In some ways prettier than Cryengine but in others not as.

The have released many many improvements over time. This is "Unreal 3 2010" That is the official nomenclature, but most people call it 3.5 or 3.75 or something along those lines. The engine is far more advanced than it was when it released.

Mirror's Edge is powered by the Unreal Engine 3 with the addition of a new lighting solution, developed by Illuminate Labs in association with DICE. So the engine needed to be modded for it to work? Fail The whole game only uses about 3 different colors with 90% blur effect Try again please

LOL, I just got it :P. I just beat that game. too bad it has so many flaws cause it is pretty unique and fun. It is actually quite pretty although screen tearing is annoying.

Yet the newer build of UDK have a Global illumnation system akin to illumnate lab's solution. You really need to take off your googles and perhaps go and actually watch the video or try the demo yourself instead of just making random complaints about it, or if you wish to persist on your complaints at least get some reasoning behind them instead of just saying "omg it looks like craps when there is light"

Show me a game that actually looks like this using the engine then I'll take it more seriously. Until then, it's merely unrealistic graphics running on some high-end pc that'll turn to crap fps when actual action happens. At least in my opinion.

I'm betting those Gears 3 screens are taken from the game running on computers instead of Xbox hardware.

The level is in the UDK, download it and run it yourself. It runs 5-20fps on my computer at 1680x1050. They need to optimize it alot especially the depth of field, that is an absolute slideshow maker.

Too bad these shiny graphics won't cover an engine as static and repetitive as that of the Unreal 3 engine. It's been used so long now, I'm really getting tired of it. I'd much rather see new technology taking destruction found in Bad Company 2 to a whole new level, or something along those lines. As it stands, CryEngine is still far more impressive than this graphically, and I think has a better day-to-night cycle. Not at all impressed.

Although I gotta say this, implement AA without making it stupidly demanding.

I wonder if they are going to be putitng directx 11 in it. There is a command in the config files to enable AllowD3D11, so maybe next release we will be seeing some tessellation options or getting their new depth of field to run at any respectable framerate.

Looks unable to render sharp images beyond the first 15 yards. Sorry but I can name at least 5 engines that put this one on shame: CryEngine, X-Ray Engine, 4A Engine, Dunia and the ones from Arrowhead and Shattered Horizon. I also think that Frostbite has overall better ratio in quality/performance.

For those who are trying the UDK, do you think it's something that could be actually playable (on PC anyway) or is it nothing more than a benchmark test?

Mystic-G

That level is not playable in it's current form. The new bokeh depth of field absolutely destroys your framerate, the flower section was 7fps when i ran the demo on a gtx 280 and athlon 640 @ 3.4ghz. im going to try removing the bokeh and see how it performs then.

Is the bokeh handled by CUDA or does it work on all GPUs?

Not sure what is handling the new depth of field.

Ah, the new UDK actually does have Dx11 and Tessellation in it. There is a controller in the material editor for a tessellation controller. I only have a dx10 card myself so i cant try it out, but this will be pretty nice for those who do. That also probably solves why the depth of field was so crippling for my computer, the UDK probably has it as a directcompute function for the dx11 cards as well.

I'm not here to compare CryEngine with Unreal. What's more important to me are the improvements over Unreal Engine 2.0 and 2.5. It looks good. This gets me even more excited about Gears of War 3.

Really? Blargh. I was so sure it was. Another case of modified UE3? Oh well, from what I've seen of Gears of War 3 game footage, it looks great.

-Scale.

-Environment interaction.

-Games. Ten years ago Epic was ahead of the pack with titles as Unreal and Unreal Tournament. Currently Epic has no strong franchises in PC, their latest big hit was UT 2004 in 2003.

Who cares? All we should care is the engine that will propably end up used by everyone like the previous Unreal engine.
