link I know it's early to talk and think about UE4 now but I think this is just another way to assure us of their support for the PC. I guess we can expect now to have even better ports for the PC.:|

Considering how Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War both sucked IMO, the consoles can have them. The last good game they made was UT2004 but even then it still wasn't as good as the original UT. Epic doesn't make quality games any more, they make mainstream trash.

Unreal 4 engine will be an engine for the next gen console, by the time we will have the cry-engine 3 that will make the poor console peasant cry when they will see how the pc master race will laugh at their 8th generation. ;)

UE 3 wasn't impressive and UE4 probably won't be either. Every UE3 FPS game looked damned similar.

Unreal Engine 4 will probably be revealed in 2009-2010. & i still don't think it ll be good enough to compete against CryEngine 2... & it already focuses on providing the best graphics possible on teh 360/PS3. not pc. The truth is that Im really too bored of seeing UE3 in every game. It's getting really boring, UE 3 has blurry bulls**t which used to look good in the starting but later i found what a next gen game engine should really look like. and that's CE 2 which looks more lifelike, photoreal. I can't even visualize what CE 3 would look like.. or what will be different features.. may be completely distructible enviroments with super detail. But i don't think any of the crytek members have even thought about working on another engine. They still have to push their existing Cryengine 2 to it's limits... which would be far more better than UE 3 or even UE 4.

but but they will lose their lamborghini

I dunno what the point to have that much money. If I had a gaming studio that would be making million seller game, I would just support my game to death, like Valve and Paradox, and throw the rest in a lake. I know that having 200 000$ car and 1 million $ house would never make me happy.

Im not really fussed about it. The original UT was my favourite in the series by far. The game was simply amazing and the series hasn't been as good since the original. To me, the series has been going downhill with every new installment. Shame Epic are focusing primarily on consoles, but hey.. they are running a business and they choose their market. We have so many other games and series out there to spend our time on. If one developer wishes to move to console only, while its a shame cause it means less games for us, it wont actually affect anything. Just look at a list of upcoming games to see how busy we are all going to be this year.

They're probably just sick of having to take the time and effort to optimise it all to run on high end and low end systems. Well, thats one benefit they have by focusing on consoles. Strange though since the original UT was a PC game. Not often developers swap like that and cut off one entire market.

Only a fool can say UE3 is ugly let alone to call out and say Gears of War a ugly game. So many bias post Idk where to begin. Why don't we wait to see it release first to speculate.. Arrogant post mentioned in this thread make this PC game board feel rather lame. Where's your game engine? I want to see your engine let alone show me your artwork or portfolio for anything that matter. Same mentality of people that said Halo 3 was a bad looking game when in reality the game looked outstanding. Same mentality that likes to slander consoles when in reality consoles is the go to platform for today's standard. Whether you girls like it or not Epic Games is here to stay in the gaming industry and myself including others will most certainly support their products. So get use to it.

No need to insult people in a civilized discussion. Epic has made some moves that are pretty insulting to the PC crowd.

And that pre-render of Gears isnt much proof for anything in terms of art.

GOW and UT3 looks horrible IMO, and were both very bad games. I loved UT and UT 2k4 but 3 was just a sad game. GOW i felt was a C- game that console fans praised... like the Halo series, not deserving the rating.

I also dislike the overuse of bloom on the UE3, a trick they must of taken from console games ( use bloom and blur to hide the low resolution/ jagged edges) and completely ruin even the visual aspect of the games.
I think the only good that has come out of this engine was Bioshock.
I max all these games out so its not my hardware, and i think the next Epic game is just going to be a rehash of we have already seen with little added features that wont save it.
(Motion blur has only worked well in some parts of Crysis and TF2[the best IMO] )

I disagree. Rainbow Six Vegas, UE3, and Gears of War all looked similar and the only decent looking game to come out of that was Gears of War. The pallete almost seems limited by the engine. The games themselves weren't too great either.

Has any exclusive game with the UE3 engine even come out? Then multiports were so odviously seen with console in mind, its so odvious with games like Bioshock and UE3.. To me this announcement is already stating the complete odviousness of a situation they put off from officially announcing it.

Hmmm... this looks like a system wars thread masquerading as a discussion about a game engine.

As for my two cents worth, given that UT3 fell flat in the face of superior competition, and that what ever his name is Epic CEO whines about piracy a lot more than other devs from what I have read, I guess it stands to reason why they are developing UE4 with a console focus. PC gamers will get over it in quite a hurry, even if they feel the need to get over it at all. We have been, and will be, feasting on quality product for some time now.

Despite the fact that I played both UT3 and GeoW on high settings and resolution, I still don't like UE3. Too much bloom makes the graphics look unncessary bright and unappealing IMO.

CryEngine and Source is where its at IMO.

Epic Games isnt leaving the PC. They already said they are focusing both the PC and console to reach to as many people as possible. We will be seeing PC games based on the Unreal engine 4 when it comes out in the future.

This proves two things:

1. Its easier to make a pretty game engine and a mediocre game than it is to make a great game on an OK engine

2. Visuals sell on consoles, and substance doesnt count for crap.

Good job, Epic, you finally crossed the line from great game maker into subpar commodity producer.

The Unreal 3 was really just for consoles. If you think of it, the engine is not that great on the PC.

Epic really doesn't like the PC anymore. M$ and Sony are buying them out pretty much.

Sins of a Solar Empire, Halflife, Crysis, Dawn of War, and countless other quality games would disagree.

Whats the best shooter consoles have? Halo 3?

Whats the best RPG consoles have? Final Fantasy?

Even consoles bread and butter genre, sports games, are going down the toilet.

Consoles may be getting a lot attention, but the quality is going out the door. So long as good games are made for PC it will always survive, no matter how dismal sales will get. In a few years the big developers will realize this.

They could easily make a great game for 1 million dollars, sell 200k copies for PC, and make a huge profit. But theyre more concerned with making Halo 10, Gears of War 5, and Final Fantasy 30 for 20 million dollars and selling 4 million copies.

Soon even console gamers will get outraged at the lack of quality.

You shouldn't blame the engine for how a developer uses it. 'Bloom' is just a graphical effect, and many game engines are capable of using it, not just UE3.

Personally, I don't mind the UE3 engine, and I'm looking forward to the following games that will be using it:

Brothers In Arms: Hell's Highway, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Alpha Protocol (new RPG from Obsidian), Borderlands, Damnation, Earth No More, Elveon, Mass Effect (PC), Rise Of The Argonauts, Rogue Warrior, Section 8, Tiberium, and maybe some others.

Some of those games may end up sucking, but that's down to the developer not the engine. As someone else said, UE3 was also designed for consoles. I slightly disagree - I think it was designed for MULTI-PLATFORM, which encompasses both consoles and PC. The simple fact is that many developers now use the console as a lead development platform, and having an engine that will enable them to more quickly develop a game across a range of platforms without having to rewrite huge chunks of code makes financial sense, especially when costs of development are getting higher and higher.

When it comes to UE4, I'm not surprised they will be designing it for consoles first. They will have static hardware as a basis for development, to ensure they can get everything working on it, and then offer a game engine solution to a lot of developers who will be working on those platforms. At the end of the day, Epic is in the business to make money, so their engine development division has to go where the money is. A lot of developers have gone into multi-platform, so why should Epic make an engine for PC first? It doesn't make sense.

Maybe UE4 will make its way to PC, and maybe it won't. Personally I'm not that bothered, because there are other engines out there, and other developers making PC titles. What I will say is that as much as I dislike multi-platform development (one size to fit all, which usually means fitting the lowest common denominator, ie, console hardware) its the way the whole industry is going, so I'm going to have to get used to it if I want to continue gaming.

I really don't care if console does get the next unreal engine. I didn't hate Unreal 3 engine. I am just indifferent about it. Considering how the pc platform is ever changing the likelihood is we will probably see something better by the time it comes out.

Now on the issue of Epic complaining about piracy. I do not doubt that is an issue. However I think developers are far too quick to jump on the "blame piracy" bandwagon than to fess up to their own shortcomings. If developers play tested their games and worked on making them run more efficently so people wouldn't have to go buy a high end pc just to even run it on a decent setting then their game would probably sell more. Numbers are down simply because the game is not available for everyone to play. Lowering system requirements would help that. Instead of doing this developers are just dangling a red herring.

Considering how many people own computers these days, PC gaming has the greatest potential if only some of these issues would be addressed.

I never liked UT3. I kind of hated how much bloom and HDR (or however you call it) there was. The enine looks OK but I don't get it why they focus on the bloom so much.

As for Epic switching permanently to consoles. I'm sure we all saw it coming, with all the whining they did about the low sales of their revolutionary (yeah right) new game, which was ofcourse the fault of the pirates. Not because the game was just average and no one really cared about it.

The console crowd doesn't have much quality FPS games, so the next UT would make a great addition to the console games. And what does this mean for PC gaming? I personally don't give a crap. There are many other PC games out there and many more will come out this year. I think UT3 was such a disaster because people just got bored with the type of gameplay that game delivers. Also, UT2004 had more features then UT3. Maybe UT original had even more stuff in it then UT3 has. Maybe if they would've focussed more on the gameplay and less on the graphics, people would've liked it. So I don't think this will have any major impact on PC gaming in general. They simply don't know how to create a good game, so they lose.

This doesn't make much sense to me. I think this is more of a leverage against intel so they won't produce anymore POS integrated chips next generation. Since they and nvidia, amd, and ati will be majorly affected by this in their sales. Also This generation of consoles isn't nearly over yet how can they make such a decision?. And Epic has always shown their engine running on SLI pc's before the console versions because the latter isn't ready yet..

My last point, many of their UE3 engine games have done well on the pc, like Bioshock, UT3 wordwide sales etc. So it doesn't seem like a good buisness decision to cut into their own sales either..

I am starting to dislike epic more and more their ceo went under fire because must of UT3 income came from pc game market. That is right after the ceo was saying pc market sucked. More like like their game sucked!!!
