Hi everyone, just wanted to know if my machine can run this game on high settings. Specs are the following: 1 gig of ram, ati radeon x1650, intel pentium 4 ht @ 3 ghz, 135 gigabyte hard drive space, windows xp.

What do you think?

No, maybe on medium settings though. Your computer is weaker then a Xbox 360 or PS3 so don't expect too much out of it.

Ok so if I was to run it on medium settings what sort of frame rates do you reckon I would get becuase I would expect something like 40 fps at the least.

No where near 40. Even at the lowest settings you probably wont get a decent framerate, but at the lowest settings its not worth playing anyway.

Where did you get the idea of 40fps from?

I might once the graphics card comes through. I'm very suprised actually that my graphcics card cant at least run it on medium settings with an appropriate frame rate. After all its pretty powerful even though its quite old.

Well do you think I could run the source games on high like counter strike source, surely it will run that smoothly?

It's not powerful. It's a midrange graphics card from two and half years ago. It was decent when it came out, why would it be any good two and half years later? The GPU in the 360 is more then twice as powerful then x1650 and current computers mop the floor with the 360.

Edit: Yes, it will run source games rather well. Just don't expect to run the newer source games like Portal or Half Life 2 Episode 2 at high settings. Those are more demanding then Counter Strike Source or the original Half Life 2.

Yes its fairly old, so what? Its pretty powerful and frankly cheap to buy when you look @ the performance aspects, but I am yet to use it so really I hope what I have said backs up this statement :P

Thanks though for advice everyone and looks like UT 3 will have to wait until further upgrades are made ;)

It's powerful for old games :P It won't play any recent game within the last 1 1/2 years on high settings. You can run Half Life 2, Doom 3, Far Cry on high settings. Maybe FEAR on a combination of high and medium settings with that card.

Counter Strike Source isn't very taxing and I just now looked up some benchmarks for your card on that game. At a resolution of 1024x 768 you're looking at 40-55 fps depending if you have AA and AF on or off.

Tbch it sounds as if you are trying to kid yourself. Games don't just rely on your GPU, you need to take your processor & ram into consideration aswell, which frankly in your case, are poor.

I am not trying to insult you here, just trying to prepare you for how dissapointed you will be when you try to play a game and it runs like s**t.

Lol, I have a gig of ram which is easily enough for css and most source games, intel pentium 4 ht which again I am sure will be fine. Just was slightly dissapointed I guess but then again maybe I am kidding myself somewhat.

Thanks guys

In fact use www.systemrequirementslabs.com to help you get a rough idea of what to expect.

Thank you for the site, I went on it and was impressed at how quickly it can tell you all the info needed about your pc and whether or not it can run a certain game.

I can run battlefield 2 ^ ^ apparently it was happy with my ram, processor speed but not to happy with the graphics card (ati radeon x300) lol.

Cheers
