I always like the UT series.

But i find this game (I only play the demo, but I'll buy the PS3 version when arrives to Europe) lacking of ambition. Is UT 2004 with more vehicles, some tweaches in the gameplay and balance, new set of maps and new graphics, that I must say that aren't very impressive ( well optimized, but I still prefer the looking in UT 2004):

The thing is: compared to Battlefield 2 or Quake Wars the gameplay is primitive, arcaic. I feel that UT III was unnecesary, because it offers the same that UT 2004 today still gives. The mp fps scene is growing, improving to more evolved and sophisticated game mechanics. You jump to BF2 and you have kits or classes, you have squads of 6 members, specific devices and items in any class. With his deployables, and heavy objective focused maps, QW is even deeper.

Imo UT III stands very well against arcade fps mp like Halo 3 or COD 4, but any of them are primitive games even compared to UTXMP. of course, high level tournaments in UT III demands very skilled players, so I don't say that UT III is easy or "cheap" game, but instead what I tempt to say is that maybe is time to Epic to launch a new ip based in the current tastes of the most of the people: more realism, classes, teamwork, ranked servers, yo see?

I have the same problem as the OP--I loved the game's SP (though, hey, I can understand where people are coming from with the crits, so don't jump down my throat). I fired up MP hoping forsome AWESOME online action (which the game clearly has the potential to deliver), and was sorely dissappointed. The menu system is absolutely annoying, but it most definitely doesn't constitute a game-breaker for me.

HOWEVER, I will say that the game feels extremely old-school in many of its mechanics. Personally, I liked this about the game, but, again I can understand why people would dislike the game solely for this quality. I will also add that the criticisms of it being to similar to past UT games are immaterial to me personally, because I never played the previous games. In short, the game has some VERY warranted criticismsthat can be leveled against it, but, for me, personally, none of the marks against the game add up to anything. I thought there would be more people like me, and that these people would be online, but hey, I've been mistaken before.

Can you share some links? Because from what I've read Epic's attitude is the exact opposite. Rein called pc their "heritage". About the gears of war port, one of the developers was automaticly making high res textures of the models because they knew in their hearts that they would port it to pc. They also critized the big pc manufacters for selling their pcs with integrated graphic cards. etc

Also from what I know UT2004 sold really well. More than the ps3 and pc versions of UT3 combined in its first 3 weeks I think.

Roris0A

I think at least one of articles he is referring to is this one, I remember it well:

"Consoles will pretty much define what the next five years of games look like on the PC", Mark Rein added

Anyway, I'm one of the people that bought UT3 and have played only single-player/offline to this point.

A couple of reasons 1) LAN parties are where I've had the most fun with Unreal Tournament! UT2K4 in particular :D I expect the same with UT3 2) I'm an SP gamer first and foremost, I do take games online (COD4 recently for example), but MP is secondary 3) The biggest reason? I'm just so occupied with other great games! Before I even think about more UT3, I have to go back to Crysis and try out the 1.1 patch! :P Also, I'm underway in The Witcher.

It's going to be a while before I get back to UT3 -- maybe give it some time and see what happens, maybe other gamers are in the same situation.

As for the game itself, I like it. Some additions, some subtractions to UT2K4. Haven't played enough to say which I truly like more or if UT3 is truly worthy of the asking price (~$50) as an upgrade over UT2K4. Menus didn't bother me much. Is it good (bottom-line and on it's own merits)? Yes, and it certainly looks fantastic. fwiw

[QUOTE="Deihmos"]

Right now there are 50 players from the USA.

JP_Russell

Damn... Strange to think someone on this forum could start a topic asking if anyone in America wanted to play some UT3, and could substantially affect the population all by himself.

That is funny and sad at the same time and entirely true, great comment :)
