sorry, cheap olevia 32" lcd232v and philips also cheap dvp5960 but the more I research it looks like that doesnt matter because the only way it will upconvert to 720p is witha digital signal i.e. hdmi...is that right?carney4Yes, there are very few players that can upconvert over component. I say, get an $8 HDMI cable and see how it looks. HDMI is better than component.
Also, not every upscaler is good you know. Did you read reviews to check which ones are the best. You need to spend atleast $200 or so, like an Oppo.Quite true. They're not all made the same. My example of this is a Sony dvd upscaler , to which, when you look at it, didn't impress me all that much. After that I got an RCA HDDVD player. I expected a lot out of it, and I wasn't disappointed. For upconversion, blew the Sony out of the water.
Don't expect anything amazing when you do get HDMI even with the best upscaler.

Don't take that as an endorsement of RCA. It's just the Toshiba HD-A1 with the nameplate changed, which does have one of the best upscaling algorithmns in the buis. Either way, it's not going to look much better, there's only so much you can do with the raw materialAfter that I got an RCA HDDVD player. I expected a lot out of it, and I wasn't disappointed. Due to CSS encryption upconverting DVD players must use an HDMI (or DVI) connection. The max output you can upscale with component cables is 480p. The 360 gets around this by using VGA connections.
