I Know this is going to be a silly question, but here it goes. I have a Gforce 7800 GTX VGA card, the current driver is still the original one, Forceware 77.77. Most of people update video driver very often but in the past I have had a bad experience with it and since then I never touch the thing. Unfortunately I have come to the point where updating my driver has become necessary in order to play the latest games which brings me to my silly question. Nvidia advises to uninstall the old driver first before installing the new one, is this really necessary. I ask because it was during this process that a few years back I found myself in a tight spot. If I install the new driver with the old one still in place will something bad happen? How do you update your Nvidia driver?

I find it annoying to update video drivers, but I do so when new ones become available. It is strongly suggested that you uninstall your current video driver before you install your new one, but I'm not sure if it is entirely necessary. I suppose they want you to uninstall first, in order to remove any files from your current driver that might conflict with new files from your update - in case not all the files are over written. I can't think of any other reason why you'd need to uninstall first...
I always uninstall my current driver first, then I have to restart my computer to finish the uninstall process. Next, I install the new driver (I always download the new driver to my desktop, that way it is easy to find and access) and after the installation process, I have to restart my computer again. Once it is all said and done, I think I've probably spent 3-5 minutes of my life updating my video driver.
