"Plans have not changed at all

Valve is now responding to those who are voicing their plans to boycott the upcoming release of Left 4 Dead 2 that was recently announced at E3. While the developer does admit that their plans to bring out a sequel so quickly is new for them, plans regarding the original Left 4 Dead title have not changed.

Valve has been quick to point out that they have an excellent track record for their support of their titles. In fact, the developer claims that they will continue to support the L4D1 community that numbers over three million.

The developer claims that it remains to be seen if players will migrate from L4D1 to L4D2 when released. Valve is still moving forward with their plans to release authoring tools for L4D1 to allow mod builders within the community to develop new add-ons for L4D1. In addition, community matchmaking, as well as 4X4 matchmaking and additional content, are still planned for release in the upcoming months, but no specifics have been announced regarding a timetable for these releases.

Some complained that the L4D2 that they saw at E3 as well as the trailer might have left the impression that the game was too similar to the original L4D1. While people might see a lot of similarities between the two, in actual fact a lot of work remains to be done over the next several months which will add plenty of new features to the game.

We believe that a lot remains to be seen here, but Valve has always been a community oriented developer who has supported the community. While many might question the wisdom of releasing a sequel so quickly, we believe that the enhancements could be more than just trivial additions to the title. We are sure that the last chapter has yet to be written on L4D2 and only time will tell whether this game will end up being what people think it should be."

this still doesn't change that you'll have to pay full price for what amounts to an expansion pack

and i still think the community is going to splinter somewhat.

either way, i'll probably end up picking it up

of course it will be supported. You don't stop supporting something just because an overpriced expansion pack is released.

I don't know why people are making such a fuss about it. I mean like, CS 1.6 came out, then a year later, Valve busts out CS Condition Zero and yet AGAIN shortly after, they release Source. Seems more like wimpy kids being Puritan about their game a wee bit too much.

Left 4 Dead 2 unlike L4D1 can be more easily updated unlike Left 4 Dead 1 which I think is a big improvement over in itself as they would have had to overhaul the mod engine out completely and build upwards.

Everyone knows Valve will continue to support L4D. The question is to what extent? The last line of "more content" just seems awfully vague.

People are pissed off about L4D2 releasing because L4D1 didnt get the amount of support that was promised. Gabe Newell said last year that L4D would receive many updates over time just like Team Fortress 2. However we have only received 1 major update where they add a Lighthouse map and add a versus mode for the last 2 levels of the game (which should've been available on Day 1 anyway). Also, please keep in mind that this game has very little content to begin with and everyone knew that only the AI Director and the modding community could keep the game alive. And from what i've heard they STILL HAVEN'T released the development tools needed to make major mods to the game. I've been to L4D modding sites, they're NEARLY DEAD because Valve wont make it easy for them. So now we have (if you dont include bots)........a multiplayer-only zombie game with only 4 levels and all we got so far is a lighthouse map. And people wonder why others are mad about a sequel so soon...

For a game that apparently has a community of 3 million you would think you would be able to fill a 4 player campaign server very quickly whatever the time of day, which is not the case. Surely not everyone is playing Versus or Survival. It doesn't really matter anyway because the game is getting boring now.

This far Valve hasn't given us any reason not to trust them, wait 'till the game is out and if it turns out to be just milking and L4D is really left for dead, then complain.

Wow.... WOW..... have you just started pc gaming or something? It IS an expansion pack, hands down. HL to HL2 was a sequel, know why? The massive new game engine overhaul, actual new features like physics etc. brand new. HL2 episodes are expansions because they give only new content expanding the story. Idiot.

No, I'm not new to PC gaming, are you? Most expansion packs only build on the content from the original game, this is a SEQUEL. It has 5 brand new campaigns, four new character, new types of ammo, overhauled AI Director which can now actually change sections of the levels and the weather, a bunch of new zombie types, new weapons and multiple new game modes (I forget how many). If it were an expansion pack it wouldn't have that much content in it.

Idiot.

This. You can ask "but what if?" about many things and find something to complain about. Let's see what they do first, and especially let's see what they actually charge for it.

It's ridiculous when a community is told all sorts of junk about wonderful expansion packs, downloadable content, extra releases, etc.. Then they add Survival mode, which is fun for about half an hour at a time and should have been packaged with the game in the first place. And that's it. No more official maps, no more offical modes, no more offical guns or weapons or -anything-. Though, as pissed as I am, I'm still going to play L4D2. It remains to be seen which is better.

The usual full price, that means 50$ or no less than 45$, it doesn't mean 30$ or 20$. Anyway, the game is crap imo, doesn't worth a thing, but the AI Director 2 is what really deserves those 50$, but anyway, I won't get it until it's 30$ ;).

How long has Left 4 dead been out, now? About 8 months? And what's the cheapest price for it? 28 bucks... http://www.amazon.com/Left-4-Dead-Pc/dp/B000PS4X7S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1244752929&sr=8-1

So, don't be an early adopter. And don't buy the Xbox version since the orginal is still at full price: http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=65253 One can only suspect that the sequel will be full price just as long... Mouse and keyboard is a better setup, anyway.

Problem solved.

--------------------------

As for the 2nd.... Amazon already has links for pre-order and a listed price:

PC, 50 dollars: http://www.amazon.com/Left4Dead-2-Pc/dp/B002BRYXRQ/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=software&qid=1244752929&sr=8-3

Xbox360, 60 dollars: http://www.amazon.com/Left4Dead-2-Xbox-360/dp/B002BRZ852/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1244752929&sr=8-4

Frankly, I think it's kind of damn funny that so many people who elected to buy a game basically before it felt like a full-scale finished product to them (apparently) are now whining about it. If it was because of bugs or something, that I could understand, but there's no good reason they should have assumed there would be much more to the game than whatever was already there. If that was what they wanted, then they should have waited until it got to that point to buy it. That's my take on the matter anyway.

Kinda off topic but.... Has anybody else noticed that valve has been doing research on TF2 and all their updates. Although its not the greatest idea in relation to L4D fans, their prolly seeing how many people are gunna jump to a new game, compare it to the idea of regular updates and then bring future releases based on what sells better..

Actually, that's kind of a lot of content for the patch. Considering they overhauled the entire thing, I don't think a patch would cover it at all.

money isnt the real issue, its more about being lied to by valve and the fact that the new game will split the community between L4D and L4D2.

Why not make them interchangable? So people who have L4D1 can still play people who have L4D2 on the old maps, instead of having to boot up 2 seperate games to play the maps and with other people.

They're simply repeating what they've been saying all along - which is fine, but the haters chose not to believe them the first time, so...they won't start listening now.

Meh, I'll be buying this day one either way, but if you're uncertain - wait until you see the finished product. The E3 build was still months away from completion.

How is that going to shut whiner's up? Seems to me just more fuel for the fire.... L4D2 owners get 2 games for the price of one, while L4D owners not only pay for both, but have an extra copy of the first game that they don't need....

You can kill zombies with chopper blades in prototype =)

There's also CoD:WaW, which has a bonus Nazi Zombies (with tons, upon tons of modded maps).

Valve needs to release the ****ing SDK for L4D immediately! I only see one reason why they'd hold off and I'd be very disappointed if I was correct.

To all the price whiners:

At least you're not paying $60 for Halo 3 OSDT, which IS an expansion pack that only contains a campaign with a few extra hours and 3 new multiplayer maps and 1 new gamemode.

L4D2, for $50, has 5 new campaigns, 4 new characters, new ammo types, new AI director (this is huge), new gamemodes, new weapons and new zombies and special infected. Theres probably even more content for it coming. I mean come on, complaining about the game content like it is in its final state is rediculous, Valve only announced it a few weeks ago!
