All the reviews on these cables I have read are saying that VGA to HDMI cables do not work because you can't send the analog VGA signal to HDMI since HDMI is digital. So I do not think it is as easy as you guys are saying. A converter box is something that I have read about with some people saying it works and others not so much.
Here, much cheaper then getting a converter box.

Spot on! Theres no chance for a VGA -> HDMI/DVI -_ to work correctly, VGA is analoge signal, HDMI and DVI is digital signal. (DVI and HDMI are compatible, they can be converted since they have roughly the same signals and amount of signal lanes. All the reviews on these cables I have read are saying that VGA to HDMI cables do not work because you can't send the analog VGA signal to HDMI since HDMI is digital. So I do not think it is as easy as you guys are saying. That first is a DVI-A it only support analoge audio/video, will show no video on a DVI input. DVI-A is a very old standard im fairly sure no HDTV can support alaloge input thru a DVI port. Here, much cheaper then getting a converter box.

So there is no way to hook an Inspiron 15 up to a HDTV? Wtf? This is Dell's basic laptop but seriously, is this for real?
Many older TV's have VGA input, but many also do not support native HD screen resolutions via VGA as that port often is used as a diagnostic input. Your not sQreewed yet!, there are usb -> HDMI/DVI adapters, they basicly work like a second videocard, some of them can support videoplayback in HD quality = guessing this is your goal rigth? The better opt. is to take the pinout's from the VGA and make a special cable to videocoaxial. (not audio because audiocoaxial is digital.) This way your getting the direct output from your VGA to the TV. There are guides on how to make such a cable on the web, but i don't know if a Intel graphics will support it, i know both Nvidia and ATI do.So there is no way to hook an Inspiron 15 up to a HDTV?
