Just wondering - is there a way to unlock the extra gig of RAM if I've got two 2 gig sticks?

I know that 32bit Vista only utilises 3 Gb but I am aware of a registry edit that allows XP to utilise more RAM - is there something similar that won't destroy my PC (which I'm more than able of doing on my own!:))?

I'm not sure but it would probably involve disabling swap space since Vista needs to address a certain amount of swap space by default, thus lowering the amount of RAM that can be addressed.

uh, the registry hack just displays the number correctly. It does not utilize more ram.

I think mine detects all 4 gig, but only utilises 3 - 64bit can utilise up to 16 gig (I think). it would make a bit of a difference if that extra gig could come into play - can't think why M$ decided to limit it!

You all should know that 4gb of ram on a 32bit OS will perform better than it will on a 64bit OS. Do ya research. Yes, even though you don't get the full 4gb on a 32bit OS, it's still better.

Therefore, is it fair to say that 4Gb of RAM will enhance performance even more in a 32bit system? So research is fairly meaningless.

As in my previous post, I don't know why Microsoft decided to put the lock on the 32bit system - if the mobo can handle it, the OS should as well.

your mobo is not 32bit nor is the processor. 32bit operations can only handle up to around 4gb, of that some of it gets allocated for other items (ie cache and video ram) because the software tallies it all into one big group. This samething will happen if you go to Linux.

If you want to use more ram, then you go to 64 bit.

That was the simplified version, there is plenty online on this subject which will be far more in depth.
