Guys I am trying to convert from being a console gamer to a PC gamer and was hoping for some tips on how to get good at FPS's online with the M/KB setup. I can hold my own any day of the week playing BC2 or Black ops with a 360 controller in my hands, but now that I am trying to learn M/KB, I am constantly getting owned. Any suggestions? I haven't really gone away from WASD, LShift, LCTRL, Space Bar, etc... Do you guys use this set up or do you have a different approach? Thanks for your input!!

Just practise, it always takes a little while to get use to something new.

Give a few different shooters a go, mess around with sensitivity and control settings (most games you can reconfigure what key does what, make the buttons what works best for you).

One thing to keep in mind is that console shooters have aim assist while most pc games don't and that takes some getting used to. Precision is key.

Didn't you make this same topic a week ago? As for advice... PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. When I first played CoD online (CoD4), I always finished bottom of the table...I wouldn't even last 10sec without getting shot. Now I always finish top 3 and with even killstreaks....

Are there FPS's on PC that would be more "noob" friendly. It seems that BC2 and the CoD games are full of very good players that are unrelenting. I need to just get more comfortable with the M/KB.

You could try TF2 but you have to understand something. It's not that CoD and BC2 games have good players, because they don't... I have come across really bad players on both games. It's just that YOU are used to console, so it looks like anyone playing PC is better than you. Trust me....it's VERY frustrating at the start (I know, it was for me on both CoD and BC2), but keep ur head up.... and keep playing... you'll see the improvement come...

Would it be suggestible that I maybe play more of a Sniper role in a game like BC2? I figure that way I can be a little more deliberate in my approach and dont have to worry about be as fast with the controls as I would if I wereto play an Engineer, Medic or Assault class.

You could try, but in the end it comes down to what ROLE you like the most and what kind of player you are. Some people like to attack, some like to defend, some like to help...

Just practice. Also realize that console FPS games have been coddling you all this time with aim assist. So now you can't just shoot "close enough" at a person, you actually have to be dead-on. Also remember that you should experiment with mouse sensitivity to find a setting that's good for you, and realize that higher sensitivities aren't necessarily better.

Well on 360, I prefer Assault and Engineer. But on PC all I have is that blasted AEK P.O.S. and I get constantly OWNED. Isnt there some download for BC2 like there was on 360 that would allow me to open up all of the guns. Id be much happier with my AUG.

M/KB is significantly faster than a controller any day of the week. The ONLY time I use a 360 controller on my PC is for singleplayer games when I dont feel like having to be at a desk. My suggestion is this. I went from PS2 to PC in Early 2008. First game I played on PC was CoD4, I played for about 4-5 weeks and I got increasingly better. All it takes is practice. Another thing that will help is.... SP FPS! To help you get the feel of the controls. M/KB is vastly superior to a controller IMO and once you get used to it, you may not wanna turn back. I got a PS3 but I mostly game on PC when I can.

As a general rule, FPS games play better on the mouse and keyboard set up but are much more brutal as a result. If you're going to play games like CoD, you have to be EXTREMELY fast in order to score a decent amount of kills. Otherwise single-player games like BioShock and Metro2033 highlight the mouse and keyboard set up really well so I suggest those to start with.

Drink a redbull.

Get a better mouse if its crappy and smooth surface/mat.

Use the best possible/cheap setup, ex: famas for blackops and play on nuketown.

Lower your settings, sometimes your screen your view gets cluttered with particle effects & details that slow down your pc.

Play on low ping server.

Also aiming isnt everything, use your movement to help you a harder target, cod doesnt require great aiming so you can be like me and get by with sloppy hipfire with movement to supplement your aiming.

You can try to get use to the setup in single player campaign. Then once you feel a lot more confy, get online and try it out again and again. Watch PC FPS vids on youtube and try to learn how they move, aim etc etc. Get a feel on why they perform well and try to replicate. The skill ceiling in PC fps is very very high so it can be particularly unforgiving to newcomers.

Yes, you could try TF2 now that it's F2P, a lot of noobs in a lot of new servers. You might be surprised though because that game is NO WHERE near noob friendly. It takes a lot of skill to get a 1:1 k/d ratio.

play unreal with bots, or play singleplayer FPSes on the hardest possible settings. Another fun practice is to play TF2 on the map tr_walkway (http://www.gamebanana.com/maps/107794) which has non-combat bots walking in straight lines...I practice my sniper shots with it

Well a good mouse and a good keyboard helps a lot. I use Nostromo + Mamba combo and I find that it helps a lot.

Also my second choice would be using a Cyborg RAT 9

I know it sounds too much to pay for but seriously once you've used it, you won't want to use anything else. EVER.

Try Quake III Arena or Quake Live. ( Quake live has a training mode that teaches some of the basics and which also helps determine your skill level for online play. )

The best way to practice without getting bored is to play a singleplayer game, try some oldies like the original AVP games, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Soldier of Fortune, Call of Duty 1, Deus Ex, Half-Life 1 ect. The oldies are less hand holdey than games are today. You can get them for a few quid on Steam or from video game stores and even PC world sell a lot of the old classics. Or try some 'newer' FPS games that should help with learning M&KB like the serious sam HD remakes, the Painkiller series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, Will Rock or Half-life 2.

Dont expect every FPS game to feel or play the same, you can own up in one game and be owned in the next. Im great on QIIIA/Unreal T but I get owned on Counterstrike.

Try adjusting the sensitivity. Some players prefer high sensetivities, but most players have an in/360 of around 8 or more. Just get one you like and feel comfortable with and stick with it.

First tip, keep messing around with mouse sensitivity until you feel you got a setting that you're comfortable with.

Second tip, get used to the controls. Whether this is by singleplayer or just wandering around an empty server. Do it, this is pretty important as FPS games on PC are drastically different in terms of controls and stuff (i.e easier to dolphin dive and no aim assist.)

Third tip, PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. fatal1ty and Thresh wasn't born super skilled at gaming, and practice against human beings not bots.

now that I am trying to learn M/KB, I am constantly getting owned. ShoTTyMcNaDeS
 All you can do is get owned and get owned some more. The way some one put it before, "you weren't the best with a controller when you 1st started". I felt the same way tho as I just switch from the 360. I played some FPS SP games (STALKER, and Metro 2033)...got owned a bunch in CSS,-made my BF:BC2 accuracy better ;). Im not at the top in BF:BC2 yet like I always was on xbox but I'm not at the bottom any more either :D. Just take getting owned as a lesson and learn from it I still am lol

The advantage of being a PC gamer is that its really faster than using controller. Just start playing FPSs for a while and practice your aiming and shooting. Eventually you will be fast enough to pawn other players. Play single player campaigns and stuff like that for a while and the start playing online to get experience of how people shoot fast.. I personally got me shooting skills from Call of Duty, Battlefield BC2 and counter strike . :P :D :)

"Practice makes perfect" is one hell of an overused cliché. But it's still very true here.

You should at least play through the single player campaigns first so you get used to the controls.

You are use to the skill level of console players and I don't mean to sound like an elitist but it is true the skill level of your average PC player is higher then that of a console player. This plus the addition of foreign controls makes it pretty crippling for you. You are just gonna have to practice and remember accuracy is defined by muscle memory and like every other muscle in the body it can be trained.

This should give you an idea of what I'm talking about and doesn't apply just to CS http://counterstrikesourcetactics.blogspot.com/2008/05/delights-muscle-memory.html

Practice A LOT. Trust me its a major pain at first, so maybe take things easy with a few SP FPS games at first and when you feel confident enough, start practicing against real players. Its really worth it though, KB\M is on a whole different level from your standard controller (its just better in every way IMO).

This. You just need some time. Start up some single player games and put them on easy difficulty so that you don't really need your mind on as many things. You can just spend most of your concentration on learning the ins and outs of the keyboard as well as finding that sweet spot for the sensitivity for your mouse.

You may want to look at getting a mouse that has a couple/few extra buttons on it. I am currently using the Razer Deathadder which is a simple mouse that has two buttons where your thumb rests. I use the top button for my Teamspeak button (obviously you can use it for an in-game action) and th elower button for my melee. I always use the middle mouse button (MMB or the scroll wheel) to throw grenades. In the CoD games, I use '1' to change weapons and I use the wouse wheel scroll to call in my killstreaks and switch to underbarrel attachments. Some people like 'c' for crouching but I like 'hold to crouch' rather than 'toggle crouch' so I prefer 'Ctrl' for that. 'Alt' is a key I find people generally don't use which makes no sense to me since it is so close to the space bar and therefore your thumb. I use 'z' for prone is CoD and other games with prone. If a game has lean, then 'q' and 'e' are for that with 'f' being the action/interact key. If there is no lean, then I will use 'e' for that and 'q' for something like spotting in BF:BC2.

I hope this helps you and like a few of us said, just play some easy single player to get a hold of it then move on to multiplayer.

A tip on how to get used to PC FPS games - learn the game by playing SP on hard difficulty. You will rage, you will swear - but when you beat the game and go on MP you will be surpised by how well you will be doing ... only problem is if the AI of the SP it's gonna be hard getting used to the game. But still - tis the best way to learn the basics - REFLEXES.
