Wanted: Decent space flight sim (e.g. Freespace 2)

I'm looking for a modern space combat sim that will make me feel the way Freespace 2 made me feel:

• Awesome visuals
• Great story
• Surprise plot twists
• Solid combat
• Like I'm piloting a ship

I'm looking at Elite: Dangerous, but it's lacking a narrative. I tend to lose interest in open-world simulations. I tried Eve Online, but found the ship piloting to be kind of boring. Looking for input!

Elite with Oculus will make you happy =)

Steam actually has a Descent game on early-access right now that looks promising; I even seem to recall it being developed by some of the original Descent people. I'll see if I can recall the name...

@napo_sp: Whoa! Where did that come from? Everspace looks awesome.

It's cool looking, but it's years off. The Kickstarter for it -just- ended.

Strike Suit Zero/Infinity were also great and probably closer to the Freespace 2 experience than games like Elite Dangerous. It's pretty "arcadey" but the action is fast and furious.

@PredatorRules: Everyone is jazzed about Oculus, but I'll be happy if I can just get great content! I am looking hard at Elite, though. What are your thoughts on the atmosphere? Progression? The lore?

@napo_sp: I'm not really looking for an arcade shooter. I want that feeling I used to get from the original Tie Fighter, Wing Commander, and Freespace. Piloting a ship, fighting for a cause, a strong narrative, etc. Looks like a great game, just not for me.

@mrbojangles25:I did some filtering in Steam: Descendent Studios Inc. is working on Descent: Underground. It's not quite what I'm looking for, but I am a huge Descent fan, so thank you for pointing this out!

Lore is meh, it's more like Fallout / Elder Scrolls games where the main story or sidequests aren't important, you just play, explore and try to get the best loot - or in this case ship/equipement

Have you played the Modded source project Freespace 2? They have dramatically improved the visuals of that game, not to mention added numerous new campaigns along with a lot of conversion mods..
