After pouring in about 20 hours so far, experiencing both Open World RvR and Scenario's (WAR equivalent to WoW's BG's) I have to say this game is absolutely friggin' awesome. I can't peel away from it - the PvP is just great!

Anyway, don't want to start a fight between MMO lovers here, just want to give people a heads up to preorder and get in on the Open Beta to see for yourselves if its worth it.

I got a free beta key three days ago and I'm finally almost about to play it, had to deal with Fileplanet way too long. This game is looking good though.

Eh, I gave up. Every night I lose my connection and forced to wait in the 1000+ minute wait again. I got it to start downloading once, but it was going at 54kb/s...

I actually have a beta key, but couldn't find any place to download the client other then fileplanet. Not being a "full member", they wanted me to sit in a 6 hour line before even starting my download. Decided to not even bother, but I may have to see if the file is in any other locations.

Anyways, after AoC I am not sure I even want to bother with another MMO. Too many good games comming out this month for me.

Yeah, seeing as how we're going to have a gaming explosion this holiday season, an MMORPG will just be a distraction. I was going to play WoW again, but that will only absorb all my game time and leave all these new games in the dust.

I was pretty hardcore I would say. I spent about a year and half playing WoW. I quit a few months after BC came out. I had a Grand Marshal Warrior, about 3 lvl 70s. Our guild didnt even get to clear Naxx yet.

Have you played Warhammer yet? And is it a lot better than WoW?

Not starting a debate here, but it wasnt always boring, and im sure you will be saying the same thing about WARHAMMER's end game after a few months.

Such is the way of MMO's, its not the gameplay thats boring, is that youve had to repeat it so many times it becomes boring to you ( and me ).

Well so far im actually having fun playing it. I dont feel as if im constintly grinding for somthing. But ill have to hit level cap berfore i know for sure.

Wow is the same thing over and over. Including doungeons. The pvp i wow is not really fun, its a grind. The intacnces are just harder and harder and all u do i farm for loot. What good is t6? Yes u can kill bosses better but u will get ur head ripped off by a scrub in s2.

Wow simply isnt balanced and the game is a constant grind/farm. Sofar in warhammer i actually enjoy rvr and i dont have the bourden of how much honor am i gonna need to farm or how long am i gonna have to jump up and down in AV.

Im simply bored of wow and i want somthing new. Even if warhammer is subpar im gonna play it :D

Yes, I guess you could say I was "hardcore" in WoW from launch til BC. I will NOT say War is better than WoW simply because I haven't played WAR as long as I played WoW, nor have I experienced end-game PvP. But from what I've experienced so far, PvP wise this thing is a second coming. I can only imagine from the ease of Open Rvr to Scenario play that there will be oodles of guilds running tactics over vent etc.

I am very sorry to hear about the Fileplanet problems, however you can use the Torrent that was mentioned I believe, thats what I used.

It's my STRONG opinion that you DO deal with the problems downloading, the reward is well worth it. The game is def. DAOC 2.0, so improved in every way.

Moreover, our guild Raw Beef Krew will be rolling on Chrace - Chaos. We have about 7-10 members we've recruited in beta so far, on top of the 15 RL friends that we have so will be perma-running 1/2 groups and more. PM me if you're interested, mind you - we are casual as we have families and whatnot but when we play we are very serious about following orders and being cooperative.

The name of this game is 100% teamwork, it's unbelievable what you can do with people who work well. For instance,

My buddy (level 10 Black Orc, the orcish equivalent to a tank) and I - (level 10 Sorcerer, pure DPS caster) were running around the Open RvR area looking for a skirmish, while waiting for our Scenario Queue to come up, and we ran into a group of four Order players.

It was near a keep, so I pulled around the corner and they all focused on my buddy - (tanks in WAR are ABSOLUTELY badass because they really are hard to take down) while they are focusing on him, I inch around the corner and target the melee that was attacking him. Luckily for me, they were all within melee range of him.

I used my spell that does X damage to the char, then rolls out an AoE FROM the target - therefore it's a ranged AoE that is target based. Needless to say, because of their poor ability at RvR I was able to absolutely decimate them. Sure, the ranger targetted me and had me down to like 96 hp when he was at about 120hp. Luckily for me I had just unlocked "Mage Bolt" a morale (If you take dmg, give dmg, you build morale which sets off certain powerful abilities that can be used only occasionally) which is an instant cast DD - executed.

It's just awesome to overcome the odds by skill, and this game shows that by using terrain, strategy, etc. you can definately do just that.

I've enjoyed WAR quite a bit from what I've played of it. My favorite part of the game so far is the public quests. Implementing them was probably the best way to get players to interact with a community while not having the pressure of finding groups, having to sit in the same instance run, etc. And they are a nice change of pace for those getting burnt out on doing the same leveling and questing grind.

Honestly, as good as the game appears to be from the short period I've played it, I'm not sure if I will subscribe. I've been getting burnt out on WoW lately, but I might use that as an opportunity to quit playing MMOs altogether. But WAR is a good choice for those looking to play an MMO. I'm not sure if I'd say it's better than WoW, especially when WoW has had a few years to develop new content now. But it's definitely one worth checking out, and the one I'm the most enthusiastic about out of all of the various MMOs that have started in the last year or so.

I personally did not like playing Warhammer. I played the closed beta and was not impressed. I found myself getting bored really quick. I am going to wait for reviews on it, or I am just gonna stick to WoW.

Same here. I played the closed beta for a couple weeks. The game really reminds me of a mix between LotRO, DaoC and WoW.

Until reviews come out, most will be. All the WAR fanboys are kids who are waiting for any game that comes anywhere near to WoW so they can play it and not play WoW.

On the other hand you have the WoW fanboys who want this game to flop so they can continue playing WoW.

For any computer game to hold your attention for more than 100 playing hours is probably a good achievement. Considering hardcore WoW players have at least 200 days playtime, I wouldn't say the game is boring, but that the inevitable finally happened.

I've been put off this game already and i've not even played it yet. Still awaiting the WAR EU site to allow account registration so i can actually play it but so far all its been is delays, disappointment, more delays and more disappointment.

For an MMO to be a success or to atleast be worth buying it has to have some decent community and customer support and so far WAR, for EU players atleast, has failed at this to be honest.

Call my cynical for judging the game before i've played it but my experience or lack of it with the game so far has been disappointing.

Mythic knows how to make a mmorpg. DAOC was great, same with WAR. I just wish that my client wouldn't crash so I could enjoy it.

There are many out there that don't like the game and will stick with WoW, etc.

This makes me happy.

Why?

Because WAR is not catering to every type of gamer, hands down this game is PvP experience - I have no doubt the PvE will be less than par just because of the complexity involved in the PvP experience.

Basically, to me it seems they AREN'T attempting to do what WoW did - i.e. cater to all types of gamers, which in reality doesn't work out.

Indeed. Many prospective European players were screaming that GOA were going to screw up with the EU open beta. Looks like they were right.. :/

For what it's worth, this technically isn't Mythic/EA's fault..beyond their mistake of letting GOA publish Warhammer in Europe in the first place. Regardless of whose fault it is, I hope they get it straightened out for you guys.

Well, I hope my opinion counts for a bit and helps someone that wasn't able to get in to the open beta decide if they are going to spend 50+ for WAR based on what they read and watch. (Please people, stop saying MMOs are free for the first month. It is 50 dollars for the first month)

First thing is first, I do not currently play WoW or any other MMO anymore as I was waiting for WAR to be released... so the good things and bad things I have to say about this game are not based off any bias on my part. They are however based on a very extensive history of MMOs and PVP.

Background: UO (release on), AC, AC2, Shadowbane (beta on), Jumpgate (beta on), DnDO(release on), CoH, CoV, DAOC, Lineage, Lineage2, LOTRO (release on), WWII Online(beta on), Earth and Beyond, EVE, EQ, EQ2,WOW since BETA... quit before BC... came back for BC... quit for WAR

Moral of the story (and the short version): WAR isn't what I was hoping it would be and I doubt I will spend the money on it. As I continue the beta and know they are constantly updating (and fixing things they break) I appreciate their efforts but some of the core issues I have a problem with.

On to more detail for anyone who actually cares what one more informed opinion brings to this discussion:

The game just seems bland. It feels like I have done things 100 times before (well, yes... I know I HAVE but some games don't make you feel like you are). The quests do keep you going at a decent clip and move you from area to area through the game so you do feel that you make progress in the world. I don't feel that the quests, at least for me draw you in with what you're doing or reading. It just feels like one more quest to do with a wall of text that has little to no depth.

This game isn't for PVE you say? I agree... so on to the more important issue at hand, how PVP makes you feel:

Again, just to state... WoW Arena PVP is terrible and a horrid waste of time for little to no excitement, not to mention those repeat sessions of BGs make me want to pull my eyeballs out (another reason I don't play anymore).

HOWEVER, to say WAR PVP is that much different is kidding yourself in my opinion. You do the same Scenarios over and over to gain renown (uhh, honor... or, renown... or... honor?). The world PVP isn't really any different than what you could find elsewhere in gaming and to say it's fresh or new is again, kidding yourself.

Now, I know RVR... and yes, this game does have it. I don't agree that it's the best RVR done, or that it provides a quality gaming experience worthy to draw you in for endless hours. I do like that you gain experience for your work in PVP, and scavanging from bodies is something entertaining enough for a bit.

I don't feel that the classes have great difference between them, and the higher number does nothing for me if I find similar experience playing one to another.

I don't feel the renown grind should be touted as that much different than the honor grind in WOW. I have read in some posts about how terrible the grind for honor to buy gear is in WOW... well sorry folks, the renown grind is the EXACT same thing.

I enjoy the graphics upgrade and appreciate that sacrafices were made in the interest of allowing 100 people on screen at the same time while providing a playable experience and some level of detail, and of course understand that there is a supposed increase in quality for release. The issue is that the game looks very much like a downgraded LOTRO or EQ2... not an upgraded WOW in my opinion and to compare it to WOW in this regard is false. It should be compared to much more recent gaming as far as quality and animation goes.

That brings me to my last problem (ok, yes... the sounds are really the last problem, but I generally now game with them off and TV or music playing), the animations are terrible. Post their update recently it is a BIT better, but it still reminds me of LOTRO on release and how clunky it all felt. It's not a lag problem, or an engine or coding problem that I can tell. They just generally move strange and it just doesn't look natural for most of the classes I have played (SW anyone?).

I plan on checking back after a few months, but for now I guess I will stay MMO retired. Probably good news for the wife.

Take care folks, I hope you enjoy the game.

DAOC BG's > WAR scenarios

But then again, I'm only tier 1. Other than that the game seems pretty solid. Still not sure if I'm going to go for another MMO though.

Roland I heard you had a very well geared character in WoW. Can you show me it? I like reading opinions on WAR too, but ones that compare it to WoW I like knowing who they come from.-Unreal-

Im sold as well after playing in the preview weekend and open beta. Big wall of text incoming!

As for my experience with the game, i have to disagree with some of the views of Ozbej.

Classes are by far really different than anything i ever played before not by their originality but the way they have to be played, every classes has different mechanics. Im going through open beta as a Disciple of Khaine and from what i tend to notice is that people are usually bound by the typical idea of healers, tanks, dps and never truly seem to perform well when they use a hybrid type such as the Disciple of Khaine.

I dont even really see how classes can be similar to others when at the core they are based on extremely different playing base, as a DoK i have a soul essence bar that is capped at 250, whenever i throw a heal around it uses the energy of that bar, it is rather limited so you need to replenish it often. That same bar is replenished by performing tricks who use action points that every classes have and is very similar to how rogues in WoW works. The most effective way to replenish this bar is to go in melee and start whacking people with your special skills, if for some reason entering melee combat seem like suicide, you have the possibility to replenish is by transferring action points into soul essence or using a range attacking ability.

During preview weekend, i played a Black Orc, based on a combo system, that means i have to execute certain skills who activate ''Da' Good Plan'' skills which themselves lead to ''Da' Best Plan'' skills. Once you perform a Da' Best Plan skill, you have to start over. I also have friends who are playing as shamans, who use the Waaaaagh system, in english it means the more damage they do, the bigger the next heal will be and the more they heal, the bigger the next attack will be. I fail to see anything related between my DoK, my Black Orc and my friends Shamans, if anything the class system is extremely different from a class to another.

As far as PvP not being that different from WoW, i have to disagree once again, WoW PvP is so predictable once you have enough knowledge of your class and the opponent class that it become a routine, i charge, mage does nova, i trinket, he blink, i intercept and so on, in 98% of the case if the player has any idea of what hes doing, he will perform this very process over and over, if they dont know the process, they die. It's mostly because of how WoW skill system work, skills have a very defined role and dont really have any equivalent which bring random situations. In Warhammer, at level 11, i have 15 abilities that can consistently be used in PvP, its a bar and half of skills at level 11. You use the skills you want to use and play the way you want to play with the skills you want to play.

You might play agaisnt a effective Disciple of Khaine who has a totally different way to play than you do simply because he dont use the same skills. It had a lot of randomness when you encounter an enemy, im sure it will refine itself into very specific strategies later once the game is released but the point is that you can be effective in PvP using different playstyle. Anyone who played WoW recently know that if X class isnt using a specific Talent Tree setup they are gimped in PvP.

Now that my rant on those 2 aspects are finished i will say, it is a must try for any PvP fan. There is nothing more satisfying than being rewarded on the spot for succeeding, what i mean is that when you kill an opponent, you gain exp, you sometime find loot on their bodies and im not talking about crap vendor items but real items that you will want to equip or use. You actually are rewarded for doing good, which is something WoW left behind a while ago with the introduction of Honor gear and Area gear where the players no longer invest any efforts, go half afk mid game and have zero reasons trying to get better. You might say, but arenas takes skills! Yes they do at a certain point, however they arent rewarding past a certain level, last season gear is as effective and the difference is very small while the efforts invested between the two are gigantic steps. I was sick of people farming their gear rather than playing the game and this is why i quit WoW at the beggining of Season 3, i retired a successful warrior who had top notch gear without hesitation.

Thats it for now! Hope you wont get angry over the fact i covered WoW in a rather negative way because it has its own strength and should be considered for those who enjoy PvE experiences while Warhammer should totally be a must buy for anyone who consider serious PvP.

Well, I hope my opinion counts for a bit and helps someone that wasn't able to get in to the open beta decide if they are going to spend 50+ for WAR based on what they read and watch. (Please people, stop saying MMOs are free for the first month. It is 50 dollars for the first month)...

Take care folks, I hope you enjoy the game.

ozbej

I resepect your opinion, but what level did you reach? I ask this because the whole premise of the game is to win the war. To do so, all 4 tiers must be controlled and then theres the final showdown at the Capital City's Gate (similar to helm's deep). I don't see how you could have experienced this in 2-3 days.

I've only played about an hour, but so far I think WAR is pretty fun. This is coming from a guy who hasn't played an MMO (for more than 30 minutes) since 2004.

hurray, more WAR converts.... i promise you guys, WAR is leaps and bounds better than WoW.

this is coming from someone that has been in the beta for a year now.

Roland123_basic

Shouldn't it be better considering it is 4 years newer than WoW and companies should have been evolving the genre and their games in this time gap?

There are many out there that don't like the game and will stick with WoW, etc.

This makes me happy.

Why?

Because WAR is not catering to every type of gamer, hands down this game is PvP experience - I have no doubt the PvE will be less than par just because of the complexity involved in the PvP experience.

Basically, to me it seems they AREN'T attempting to do what WoW did - i.e. cater to all types of gamers, which in reality doesn't work out.

Magebane

I do think its possible to cater to all types of gamers, considering WoW has more subscribers than any MMO to date. Yes, we all have played a tone of WoW and gotten bored of it..but that doesn't mean that we can't respect WoW because truly it did meet all the needs of players and was great. You're going to burn out from any game that you've spent days on its just reality.

If Warhammer does become your game of choice in two years or whenever you get burned out from it you will be making complaints like "oh its just the same war and it never ends! even when we capture the cities, they just go back to the enemy there is no way to win this game sux"

If this didn't happen then there would be no reason to make new games. There would still be WoW and Dark Age of Camelot instead of Blizzard's new MMO in development and Warhammer.

When the human mind burns out of the same technology or idea evolution and innovation occur..

[QUOTE="Elann2008"][QUOTE="Magebane"]

Magebane

I only have one question. Were you or are you, a hardcore WoW player?

Wow, thank you for writing all that.

You've definitely got me interested now. I'll find out in a week how great this game is. From what I've read, it sounds good so far. :D

BobZany

That's awesome feedback. Thanks!

Hmm, interesting.
