Even though I'm a pretty big DOW 40k fan, I will easily go with Rage. Space Marine looks like an all-out action game without substance. I hope I'm wrong but everything I've seen so far looks lackluster; slapped into one package for the hack n slash, beat'em up gamers. That isn't necessarily a bad thing though.Elann2008
Substance? LOL!! Name me one game that ID Software has been part of that EVER had any substance? Rage is a shooter, not an RPG. At least WH40k Space Marine has some RPG elements to it.
Don't get me wrong, Rage looks like an awesome shooter with cutting-edge graphics, but not a game with lots of substance. WH40k looks awesome as well so it will be interesting to see which one turns out better. Rage is definitely getting more hype, but that doesn't really mean anything.

Obviously, your definition or lack there of, of substance is different from mine. I didn't say Rage had more substance. We all know what Rage is, and it's a shooter. So far, all they've shown of Space Marine is hack this, chainsaw that. I was expecting more from a Warhammer game, that's what I was trying to say. Something with story, memorable characters, but it seems like it's more just about straight up killing. Like I said before, which isn't necessarily bad.Space Marine looks, ok I guess. But like Elann said it looks like it lacks any kind of substance. Rage on the other hand looks really good and iD is putting a lot of work into making it deeper than anything else they've done.
Looking at both its going to be close. 2 Different Genres and i think people maybe underestimating Space Marine a bit here. I mean apart from game play what do we know about either story? I am sure SM will beat Rage in that department and would be surprised if it was the other way around but you never know. Right now i am going to say both will be rated equally as high, unless one is a flop for some unknown reason. Sales i think Rage will win thanks to the sheer amount of FPS junkies and the already apparent moans from 40K fans putting off non 40K fans. I hope SM is the better game i am a huge Games Workshop fan to be honest a great universe created in Britain and a world wide company struggling to bring so much to so many for years. Walk into a Games Workshop and get invited for a game or to paint i think the place is great and i wish our government here in the UK would give it more Kudos oh and the Press.

I agree. WH40k Space Marine is way underrated right now and may end up being an awesome game that doesn't get much attention because of lack of hype. Meanwhile, Rage is part of the usual hype machine but might not end up being as great as everyone is expecting. I guess we all will just have to wait and see.
I already ordered the Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Collector's Edition (PC version). A 3rd person action game based in the Warhammer universe is just too awesome to pass up! Makes Gears of War look pretty lame in comparison.
I don't care which games are hyped the most. I buy whichever games look the best to me.
I'm going to end up buying both because I love Warhammer 40k universe and I I think it will be just plain fun, kick back, and relax kinda game. But how exactly does it make Gears of War look pretty lame when it's obviously inspired by it? If it's going to copy anyone though, I would rather it be Gears of War than any other cover-shooter. Gears of War series is one of my favorite series on the consoles.I already ordered the Warhammer 40,000 Space Marine Collector's Edition (PC version). But how exactly does it make Gears of War look pretty lame when it's obviously inspired by it?Elann2008Simple really. The Warhammer 40k universe is far more interesting, has far more lore, and is far deeper than the Gears of War universe. That's how it makes Gears of War look lame.

I do not disagree with you that the Warhammer 40k universe is far more interesting. To me, Gears of War hasn't really developed itself into what you would call a game universe. But making the comparison between the two is just unthoughtful. It was so random how you came about it. Warhammer 40k hasn't done anything like this before, so whichever way you go about it, it is probably inspired by Gears of War or a game that is similar to it.
Note: I am referring to the gameplay style, not the universe. The whole gore, chainsawing, Warhammer-becoming a shooter, all in third-person. Whether you want to deny it or not, the gameplay style is inspired by Gears of War. I am hoping its deeper than it looks though.
RAGE! of course! ID has a big history of making great FPS. all the games they have make so far are perfect and i enjoyed them a lot. my favorite is DOOM3 . But Relic has never made a action game before so i dont have high expectantions from Space marine as it is their first action game. But rage will be the best game that for sure.
Rage all the way. ID always makes good FPSs, while this is Relic's first shooter game based on the Warhammer series.
Even if Rgae doesn't live up to it's expectations, a lot of people will buy it because of the hype.
If your going to do a WH40K action game, you do it as an RPG where you progress from a guardsman, to veteran, to marine... so on. Choosing weapon/wargear specialities along the way etc. They just basically distilled the complexity and intricacy of 40K down to a hack n slash game.
RAGE on the other hand isthe firstid game in 7 years, which in my opinion makes it one of the most important gaming events this year.
Both games look fun, but I know RAGE will make me part with money first.

I'd go as far as to say it is themost important event in gaming this year. This is id's first game this generation. That's huge.

I was being slightly ambiguous so I didnt end up sparking offthe wrongargument. Its definetly my most aticipated title along with Deus Ex: HR.
I'm sure Space Marine will be a very solid shooter, but Rage is just a bigger and more ambitious title
Quake III and Quake IV were crap. However, Rage does look quite good. That being said, I think WH40k Space Marine will be better because of the Warhammer universe alone. The Warhammer universe is just awesome and very interesting with a great amount of lore to it. It is extremely unlikely that id Software can think of a better setting than the Warhammer universe. Also, the gameplay for WH40k Space Marine simply looks better than Rage.
I think it will most likely end up like this:
WH40k Space Marine = great graphics, awesome gameplay
Rage = awesome graphics, decent gameplay
I predict a score of 9.0 or higher for WH40k Space Marine.
I predict a score of 8.0 for Rage.
In my opinion, Relic Entertainment is simply a better game developer than id Software.
Space Marine has pretty mediocre visuals judging by the gameplay footage. It was initially going to be console only but Relic decided to be kind and make it for the PC as well.
Don't get me wrong, Relic is literally my favorite dev of all time, but ID has far more experience with shooters.
What is all this nonsense about "experience with shooters" some of you are talking about? What a completely illogical argument against Relic. Relic's game "The Outfit" was Tactical Shooter! And it was a solid game. Maybe it wasn't the best game ever, but it was still a solid game.
Nevertheless, Relic knows how to make great games, period! Their Homeworld series, WH40k: Dawn of War series, and Company of Heroes series were all awesome!
On the other hand, id Software's games are kind of hit and miss, some are good and some are junk.

Except that ID hasn't made a exceptional game in the last decade.. Doom 3 was overshadowed by Half-Life 2.. And the game by many was seen as a complete disapointment.. They are far from the juggernauts they use to be..
I'm really looking forward to Rage. Despite the setting, id are really going out of their way to create something different. Can't wait!
Quake III and Quake IV were crap.Baurus_1
Quake 3 was what?
It's the best multiplayer arena shooter id ever made, it's their most popular game, it's the standard for arena shooters, it's still active and fantastic even today.
How is that crap? or you just played the mediocre IV and assumed 3 is bad too?

Have to agree with this. I think Rage looks and sounds pretty good, but i'm skeptical about it. I'm also not completely sold on Space Marine either. I love the 40k universe, and i'm glad that Relic is doing something different with the ip, but hopefully there's some depth to the gameplay.
Apples to oranges though, the two are completely different games.

Quake III Arena was a piece of junk compared to Unreal Tournament that was popular at that same time period. id Software is overrated, but I do admit that Rage looks good, but not as good as WH40k Space Marine.Been following both for awhile
Rage looks quit fun..Not sure what some of yall are talking about when yall say it looks flat..Seams fun to me..Some of the different style guns they showed at e3 looked interesting..Looks to be a different kind of fps that they have tried in the past..
SPace marine not sure what to think yet..Have only seen a few vids..They didnt go into much of the game in e3.,Still its relic and 40k, what more can any relic fan want..
As im picking up both im sure ill have fun with both being different games..

There's something he stuck in there that should have stuck out: IN MY OPINION... He's not trolling, he's answering the thread. Just because he didn't enjoy Super Meat Boy as much as everyone else doesn't mean he's a troll. As an ork would say: "Sod off." I tend to agree about Super Meat Boy in that it pushed no technical boundries. That is something that, IN MY OPINION, should also reflect in reviews when it comes to ratings that high. I also agree that his other thread was a troll thread, due to the way he put things.No. No no no. RPG where your character gets promoted from Guardsman to Marine? That'll completely alienate the 40K faithful; because in the 40K IP, that is impossible. Marines are bred on nearly inhospitable worlds from the strongest humans imaginable, and then are cherry-picked to be tested to become Marines. Guardsmen are normal people. ---- Anyways, Rage just seems like another of something that's been done over and over and over again; like a part of a gaming fad. Doesn't mean it won't be a good/great game, it's just nothing new. Id could have used the opportunity to make something creative and interesting, but instead...post apocalyptic shooter. Why not reboot Hexen or something? No, we're going to cash in on fad brought upon by Borderlands and the like. Yawn. Space Marine is Relic trying to get an awesome, established IP (40k) some more mainstream recognition by showing what 40k is all about in a way that even the dumber general public is going to get. Is this good? Ask one 40K guy/girl and they'll say yes, another will say no; it's like asking a Rabbi about the afterlife. So they're kinda opposites: one's fighting it's way up the ladder (40K), the other kinda descending into apparent mediocrity and hiding behind some "revolutionary tech" that no one's been really impressed with yet. With the actual question, I'm hoping it will be Space Marine. 40K is such an amazing IP full of all sorts of great things, and is responsible for so many things we see in gaming nowadays (Warcraft/Starcraft, for one), it deserves more. Id had it's moment; and they have opportunities to use tech to show the public some really cool stuff, but instead they're taking the "safe route" with something generic, throwing some stupid advertising out, and, well, personally I think they're shooting themselves in the foot. Am I a little skewed? Yea. I grew up with Doom, but I also grew up with the likes of Planescape: Torment, Baldur's Gate, and Ultima. I like to see a good story get it's dues; and 40K is filled with good stories. Even if this one will be a bit more shallow than many others. If your going to do a WH40K action game, you do it as an RPG where you progress from a guardsman, to veteran, to marine... so on. Choosing weapon/wargear specialities along the way etc. They just basically distilled the complexity and intricacy of 40K down to a hack n slash game.

But on paper THEY ARE.. Relic has released more quality titles this past decade than ID.. ID literally is only known from their very very early 2000 titles and 90's titles.. Doom 3 their last big juggernaut was seen as a big disapointment by most and was completely overshadowed by Farcry and Half-Life 2.. You can't seriously base whether the game is going to be good or not on their track record for the past 10 years.. Becuase they literally have CLOSE TO NONE.
What is all this nonsense about "experience with shooters" some of you are talking about? What a completely illogical argument against Relic. Relic's game "The Outfit" was Tactical Shooter! And it was a solid game. Maybe it wasn't the best game ever, but it was still a solid game.

I remember "The Outfit", That was lots of fun. And the Online was interesting too.Why not reboot Hexen or something? No, we're going to cash in on fad brought upon by Borderlands and the like. Phenomellama
What fad? Fallout is an established franchise that hasn't really an equivalent. Borderlands isn't post-apocalyptic, last I checked. It's very superficial to claim mediocrity when they are all very different games from one another. Hell, there are even significant aesthetic differences between each other. It's similarly erroneous when SM has comparisons draw with GOW, and the same applies here with Rage.
[A]pparent mediocrity and hiding behind some "revolutionary tech" that no one's been really impressed with yet. Phenomellama
And if you had been following the news and community for this game, you would have known that everyone who has seen Rage in action for themselves have raved about the incredibly smooth and detailed visuals; highly varied environments and enemies; strong animation and satisfying gunplay.
I get that you may not be interested all that much, but there's no need to split imaginary hairs to find fault. Just enjoy the fact that there's two really interesting games coming out from some of the best developers in the industry.
I tend to agree about Super Meat Boy in that it pushed no technical boundries.Phenomellama
So now every game has to be the new Crysis to be good? We can't rely on, you know, gameplay in our games?

Do you really think that some Gears of War knock-off is going to get Warhammer 40k any kind of mainstream recognition? Especially when they're releasing in the same month as Gears 3?
