I think it was mostly balanced, or intended to be as balanced as possible, they nerfed a few units and removes some exploits.

EDIT: Match after match after match can only prove is something is balanced. In it's launch condition it was pretty damn good.

It had a pretty balanced launch. There were a good number of exploits and glitches though.

If it wasn't balanced, I don't think so many people would still be playing it :P

It was pretty balanced when it first came out. Its got better over time. But generally you didnt really see huge increases or reductions in damage or resources of any units.

Ummm... No it wassnt really well ballanced at launch.

it was not horribly broken, or incredibly imba, but there were some things that just did not match up, especially in the protoss cost/effectiveness area.

As someone said it did become alot more ballanced when Broodwar came out, which basicly brought Terran and Zerg up to protoss level.

and there were some units that just did not work as intented.

But as I said thier issues were rather minor compared to some other rts games, (C&C series comes to mind for some horribly imba units).

Starcraft's balance at launch was better than most game's balance when patched (Company of Heroes). But yea, it had its problems.

No starcraft wasn't balanced when it came out. Zerg rush, anyone? Plus all the bugs & glitches that had to eventually get fixed.

Haha zerg rush. In the old SC vs DoW thread there was this guy who claimed SC was horribly unbalanced because of zealot rush. I'm eagerly waiting for the next newbie to say "marine rush."

I don't know about the zealot rush, but the term zerg rush originated from early SC zerg. That's why they toned it down with patching, and people still do it to this day.

The only toning down during the early period I remember was slightly increasing price the of hatchery. That's hardly significant. You must think that in order for a game to be called balanced each match up has to be a perfect 50-50.

Um, so what's your point? At the start of the game when you're timing these things down to the second, the difference between zerglings arriving at your base with marines waiting, and them arriving at an empty base, is huge. And this was just one issue, just go look up a patch history of SC if you don't remember the number of balance changes and bug fixes that needed to be made.

I always thought the Terrans had something of an advantage over the other races, although they are probably the race that I was the worst with myself. Their siege tanks backed by other units are very hard to penetrate. They also had high end abilities which were a pain in the ass for basically any of the high end units of either of the other races: Irradiate versus Zerg, and EMP Blast and Lockdown versus Protoss. Terran domination entailed a lot of obsessive micromanagement though, probably why I sucked with them

Yes it was pretty balanced especially after the arrival of Brood Wars. What made this balance even more amazing was the races were unique in basic working philosophy and were not just a carbon copy of each other with few differences here and there
