so my monitor is 23'' and 1080p

I went to play the sims 3, maxed out everything, still the graphics looked ugly... the monitor was set to 1080 then I changed it to 1920 x 1200 and the graphics looked MUCH BETTER !!

how can my monitor run that resolution if it's a native 1080

Does this mean if I set any game to 1920 1200, I can see a huge difference in graphics ?

It would of course be helpful to know the make/model of the monitor.

If you can select 1200p and you didn't create a custom resolution, then your monitor is 1200p (especially considering you see a visual gain from 16x10).

If this is true, then you are an idiot...

Make -and- model, please. Asus makes a ton of different monitors so "Asus" doesn't really narrow it down.

A lot of 1920x1200 monitors are advertised as 1080p, it's probably 1920x1200 natively.

http://uk.asus.com/Display/LCD_Monitors/VE248H/#specifications

It's a 1920 x 1080p monitor alright, might need to see if Ilyama have been as nice to me as Asus are to you ;)

That's a 24" screen. not 23" btw.

Is it possible that the game detects your native resolution and simply enables supersampling when the resolution is above the native? Seems like the only logical explanation to me. I know Arma II does this, if you set the 3D resolution to higher than your monitor's resolution it will render at that resolution then scale down to fit, giving you a better quality than with native 1080p. Very taxing on the GPU though.

Could you elaborate on what you mean by "looks ugly"? Also, what connection type are you using?
