What AMD Socket are we on these days? 939?

I'm building a new computer for school (going to make a post later today about it's specifications), and just have a quick question about the socket type I should be going with. I went into this thing thinking that 939 would do (this computer is for school, Macromedia and Photoshop -- no gaming), however I want it to be able to run Vista when I decide to upgrade and such, so I was wondering if 939 is still the way to go? I've also read about AM2, but something tells me that might be a dual-CPU setup? Something that I don't really need...

Okay, thanks a lot. I just assumed that they would be more expensive but now that I'm looking at it, I can get a Sempron 64 3000+ with a heatsink and fan for $29 at Newegg. You just can't beat that.

AM2 and Socket F (1207FX), which is pointless and expensive. :P

Anyways, you should aim for an Athlon X2 processor.

AM2 is the current socket that AMD is still manufacturing CPU's for. 939/940/754 I believe have been effectively EOL'd.

Once DDR3 becomes matured and/or if a lot of memory manufacturers start phasing out DDR2 memory, AMD may then be forced to create a new AM3 socket by then. Though hopefully by then, we'll also have seen a significantly new processor that could better take advantage of how DDR2 and DDR3 work.

True but the new AM2+ processors (like the quad core Phenoms) will fit in the AM2 sockets, so yeah, AM2 is definitely worth it
