What Are Some Really Great Multi-Player Action Games?

According to websites that collect and average reviews, the kings of multi-player action are:

Unreal Tournament 2004, Battlefield 2, Counter-Strike (Source)

It gets fuzzy after that. It becomes really hard to determine which action games have great multi-player from reviews, because they review the single-player campaign and the multi-player aspect combined. Most action games have both. I have only come up with a few titles that may deserve recognition:

Aliens vs. Predator 2

America's Army: Special Forces

America's Army: Operations

Battlefield 2142

Brothers in Arms: The Road to Hill 30

Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood

Call of Duty

Call of Duty 2

Try Call of Duty: United Offensive! It may not have as great graphics as Call of Duty 2, but is is faster and you have way more weapon opptions and you have the whole ranking deal which adds to the action. You can also cook grenades and have map views all making for a real action packed multi-player game. Best played with even numbers for capture the flag and team deatchmatch and you will need no 8 or more players to really make it fun to LAN! Online is also great!Brendonius

Save your breath mate. If anybody does any decent amount of research into which CoD is better in the franchise and yet still picks CoD 2, then they have a mental handicap.

Q4 was a total failure. 3 is played more :) ALso that list is alittle old, not that old games are bad. It just if you wanted something more modern, ask around people will tell you what you should get depending on your likes/dislikes.19chevelle72

I don't think the list is old. Is 2004 (~ave.) old? You yourself are saying that Q3 is better than Q4. An 8-year-old game is better than a 2-year-old remake? I'm not saying that it is or is not, but you're contradicting yourself.

Okay...on another note, IT DOES NOT MATTER how revolutionary/outstanding a game was during its time. It only matters how good a game is NOW.

I disagree. I reinstalled Diablo and found it to be unmatched. It is quite an epic game in it's own. I found it much more enjoyable than the new crap that is out today. That is because Diablo was made with great creativity by great people. Right now there is very little of that and many companies are trying to make a quick buck.

But the game IS good NOW! When I installed X-COM: UFO Defence (1993)about a month after finishing Half-Life 2, I found X-COM to be the superiour.

You're right, but all I'm saying is that you shouldn't look at how old a game is. You should treat games as if though they were all published in one day. It's just impossible to do this if you read game reviews because of "game-inflation".

I don't want to steer the forum topic astray. I just want to expand the list of games and maybe somehow rank or classify them.

It might be misleading. People may play the multi-player because they bought the game for the single-player.
