As far as I know, the only North American retail MMORPG that has died due to lack of players is Asheron's Call 2. There are probably plenty of indie ones and others that were developed in other parts of the world.
Other MMORPGS that nearly died were The Saga of Ryzom and Horizons.
Some old MMORPGs are low on players but they are still alive. I have never played Everquest, but I am an active player of Asheron's Call. From what I hear, the servers in AC are slightly more populated than EQ. That's funny because EQ had a much higher population than AC for a long time. I think people don't bother with EQ now becuase they can just play WoW, EQ2, or Lotro and get the same experience. AC is more original, and not really copied by other games. People play it because there is no true replacement.
