to avoid bottlenecking, what would be the minimum in CPU you would need?

i know we don't know much, just want estimations.

I would go with an Intel i7 (preferably a socket 1366) cpu. Or for an AMD it would have to be either a PII 955 or 965. The fermi gpu's are going to be expensive and if you are willing to pay that much there is no reason to use a budget cpu.

Your Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition would probably suffice until games require more than 2 cores. At that point you could always upgrade your CPU to a Phenom II X4 (or X6 when they are available)

think my cpu would handle it, might even get one of the mid-high nvidia dx11 cards, and sli it later, dont know we will see when price performance ratios present themselves.

but back to my cpu phenom II 940 am2+ 3.2ghz .

E8400/Q6600

Maybe if the Q6600 was at 3ghz or higher. Those CPUs are not comparable.. in most games the E8400 beats a Q6600 down because of clock speed. My guess for avoiding a significant bottleneck would be a Core 2 duo OR quad above 3ghz, a Phenom II of the same clock speed, or any i5/i7 or better should be enough to unleash Fermi from what what we know of it. The only games in which a dual-core would be the bottleneck versus an equally clocked or lower-clocked quad-core of the same family would be in games that take advantage of 3+ cores (meaning relatively few).

Same here, overclocked Q6600's beat stock speed i7's by quit a bit in a lot of games.

I wondered why the q6600 still sold so well. That'd explain it.
