mac users rave about macs having the best os ever made.

but really what does a mac do that pc can't do. right?

what are the pro's and cons of each.

PS if you had a choice of switching to MACS would you?

If I weren't a gamer, I would be using either Mac Leopard, or a linux distro (Even though that's what Mac OS basically is).

Macs, both in hardware and software terms, aren't designed for people like me, so I have no opinions on them. I'll use any OS as long as it can be installed on any hardware of my choice, including and especially ones of my own construction. It must also support, without major compatibility issue, all my games and software past, present and future. Finally, it must have a user interface which can be modified through hand tweaks and third-party software to my heart's content. Currently, the OS that best fits all my conditions right now is Windows XP Service Pack 2 - so I use that.

I got a PowerMac that I have yet to setup again. They're fantastic systems with an awesome OS. They're drawbacks would have to be software supportand maybe a bit too pricey still. You get what you pay for with these though. I have yet to build a high end PC that my Mac doesn't slap around.

I have a ton of reasons for not wanting one. Some of them include: Price, lack up upgradeability (though they are getting better, sadly you still need to buy "mac ram" and such, which is again, way overpriced), and the fact that every person I know that owns a mac is an arrogant cock that things they are better than everyone around them.

Oh, one more thing...a pregnant yak with broken legs is quite stable since it would not be able to support itself with those legs and is therefore on the ground. Since it is on the ground, and it weighs like 2000 lbs, it is pretty bloody stable.

I have a Mac, but I bearly use it because it's in dire need of upgrading but the parts are just too damn expansive for what they are, and also becuase of the lack of software support for it. Also, I may be nitpicking, but I don't like not having a right click.

There are two preconditions for it to even become a possibility:

1) Let me use my own hardware

2) Bring the freaking price down

Otherwise its just proprietary, expensive, hardware-specific Linux/BSD. The Gnome interface is pretty much the Mac interface.

I wish that Mac would be a little more openminded and release their OS for personal use, the way Windows and Linux are.

I know that Apple would have to come up with a lot more hardware support. but I can still dream, right?

Reasons why I don't use a mac:

1. Expensive, even more so for upgrading, and only one source.
2. Proprietary, I have just about no control about what I want in mac hardware
3. The OS is for people who don't like to tinker, I leik to tinker around.
4. Games, forget it.

Reasons why I wish I could use a mac:

1. They are godly with multimedia applications like CS, and Final Cut, etc. (although this gap is closing every year).
2. They come with great (working) multimedia apps built into the OS.
3. It just works.
4. Memory management, and the fact that most macs come built with 4+ gb of RAM (that the OS actually uses very well, unlike Windows' constant need of a friggin page file, aka security blanket.)

Your PC gaming days are over if you switch to mac. Sure there are some games that make it there, but honestly there are only a few that go there and they arent enought to make someone abandon the varity that Windows brings.

I have a 17" Macbook Pro and it could very well be the best piece of hardware I've ever owned. I've been a Windows guy since 3.1 and have spent a lot of time in and out of my computer, and while that time is definitely well-spent, I wish I would have bought a Mac several years ago.

That being said, I know my Mac's limitations. I can play the Blizzard games through OSX, and any pre-2006 Windows games through Boot Camp pretty well. Oblivion starts to wear down, but I can play it on med/low settings. Half-Life 2 works pretty well. However, I got the Mac in order to do things that the Mac is good at. Namely, I'm a musician and composer, and Macs are just well known as superior machines when it comes to the audio/visual arts. I run Sibelius and Logic (two music softwares) and they are totally flawless. Yes, you can get good music programs to work on PC, but comparing the two systems, I'd go with Mac. Also, the OS is just so nice to work with. It's simple - and while some folks would frown upon simple, I think they are just being pretentious. It's a great OS.

So go for a Mac if you want to use it as a great computer. Not as a great GAME computer. Building your own is still vastly superior for performance and price.

Desktop computers, I'll likely be sticking with custom-built Linux or Windows machines. For laptops, Apple is the only way I'll go.
