I am wondering how much ATI has taken up the martket since their 4xxx series.
Most of my friends switched to ATI and they have been Nvidia users till the 4xxx series.

They have taken a lot of market share. Latest reports have shown ATI holding 21.5% of the market share and Nvidia 26.5%. Intel still reigns supreme with their crappy IGP's with over 50% market share.I am wondering how much ATI has taken up the martket since their 4xxx series.

I have ATI right now. I don't really have a preference for one company or the other. Both make good products.jtcraft
Agreed. I had an 8800GTX before my 5770s, and I like both. I wouldn't get Nvidia's current range, but if Nvidia can bring out a powerful GPU in the future without needing nuclear power for it, I'd consider it.

I have both e.g. NVIDIA Desktop Geforce 8600 GT, Geforce 8600M GT(ASUS G1S dead), Geforce 9500M GS(ASUS G1SN, heat from the heat sink cracked the surrounding case), Geforce 9650M GT (ASUS N80VN), ATI Desktop Radeon HD 3870, Desktop Radeon HD 4850, Desktop Radeon HD 5770, Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (Sony VGN FW45GJ). My next laptop would be ATI based.2 years back i always had this thought that nvidia is the best because the name sounded cool, but now i realise how cheap and awesome ATI is and to me cheap is always good, i mean nvidia is good too but their cards are just too expensive for me..
two beast PCs currently live at my place, one i7 920 witha gtx 275 used only for AION (an MMORPG) and photoshop, while my i7 930 has my ati 4850. so teh nvidia we use for more workstation style stuff (maya gets thrown at it from time to time) and the ATI is pure games with low power consumption over the gtx 275.
and if you want even a lower power consuminng beast upgrade the 4850 to a 5770. the 4850 is still good thoughtwo beast PCs currently live at my place, one i7 920 witha gtx 275 used only for AION (an MMORPG) and photoshop, while my i7 930 has my ati 4850. so teh nvidia we use for more workstation style stuff (maya gets thrown at it from time to time) and the ATI is pure games with low power consumption over the gtx 275.

not sure if this interests you, but here's a poll about Fermi by TechPowerUp:smc91352More or less how I feel currently; I'd rather grab another 285 to SLi but they're still heinously priced right now to do that. So I guess I have to wait until a more power-efficient revision comes out.
I currently have a Sapphire 5770 which means the next video card I buy must be an nVidia. I'm not a fanboy of either. So long as they're decent enough for what I bought them for.
Been using nVidia cards for a while now, currently using two 9800GTX+ but i did buy a GTX480, just waiting for it to be delivered.
If the GTX480 lets me down then i have no issues with looking in the Ati range, a good card is a good card regardless of who makes it.
I am going ati for my next upgrade, unless some how nvidia starts selling their cards at cheaper price points than ati. the best performance to price ratio always wins and ati is in the lead and will be, fermi cards havent affected their lead. The 5xxx ati series is like the 8-9 series of Nvidia two years ago. There is just soo much performance for the price, even though I am sensing how they are inflating prices cause of their major sales which is not good. They gotta drop the 5870 to $300-250 price range which I think it was a month ago. I find this sudden inflation because of Nvidias new releases sad.brownwhalethats just supply and demand...happens in all areas of hardware. at the mo flash memory for SSDs is also expensive i think due to a shortage. apple i think put in huge orders for its hardware. theres no point in obsessing over it...just wait until the price is right for you and snap it up. unfortunately if you need a card now then you will have to suck it up. i wouldnt completly blame nvidia and ati for this also...i reckon retailers are taking a bigger cut because they can. the ati cards esspecially are like the wii at its launch....they just wont stay on the shelf :P.
I had a GTX 260 but upgraded to an HD 5870 and currently happy with the performance of it. Will probably buy another for CrossfireX in the near future. No preference here on which company to go with. I like both Nvidia and ATI/AMD. I think the GTX 470 and 480 are fantastic GPU's but they were too late to the party for me to get one of those.
im a fan of both. i just ordered 2 5770s to replace my 275 because its using too much power. i find it funny that they use less than one card and are more powerful so we will see how it will turn out
I currently use Nvidia but when I get a new computer I'm getting an ATI. ATI just seems like it has a better price to performance ratio.

the 5770 was teh initial thought, but the 4850 still doesnt struggle much on anything so far, especially gaming at 1680x1050. i either sacrifice resolution or AA and it brings back any game that MIGHT struggle to being perfectly playable anyway (so far only crysis really stresses it out, but at 1440x900 with 4x AA and all settings to hgh it runs over 30fps, even 60fps indoors)
might wait till the successor to the 5770 comes otu to replace both the gtx 275 AND the 4850. skip the 5xxx generation.
its clearly i am for nvidia, i rather support the underdog instead to follow the best hardware/price that seems only to be the best in the first view.

This statement makes no sense at all to me. You're saying that you support Nvidia because they're the "underdog?" I hope that's not what you meant. That are not the underdog. They are the favorite, and have been for several years. They are currently the favorite that's slipping up, and the underdog ATI is running them down.

If we're talking USD, the 5870 was never in the $250-300 range. The 5850 was, if that's what you meant. The cheapest I've seen a new 5870 go for since launch was $379.
The poll results so far are very interesting. I think we're seeing a fundamental shift in the landscape over the past couple of years...really since the release of the ATI HD4000 series cards. The 5000 series have pushed more and more people over the edge to ATI, myself included. From 2003 till October of 2009, I had always bought Nvidia cards. FX 5200, 6600, 6600gt SLI, 7800, 7900gt SLI, 8800GTS 640, 8800GT SLI, 8800GTS 512 G92.. and then the 5870.
