Mass Effect 1&2 are groundbreaking in the way that the two games interact with each other across installments through the save, showing real impact from the player's choices from the first game in the second. Not to mention the perfect marriage of combat that's both fast paced and tactical with storytelling elements. PEople who scoff at these games are dummies.

The Elder Sroll games are groundbreaking in the way they create these huge worlds with all these myriad ways for the player to screw around.

Star Control 2 and Master of Orion were both ground breaking space games, though it's sad that nobody really seems to have taken SC2's cue and continued that kind of action exploration space drama with realtime top down space battles and landing on planets and all that.

I'm not so sure most people understand what the term "groundbreaking" means...

Daggerfall: 1st substantially large sandbox type game. No sandbox game can touch this one.

Morrowind: 1st user friendly, professional grade modding kit that resulted in the largest modding community in gaming history and its still going although some moved over to Oblivion and Fallout 3.

Pools of Radiance ~ Gold Box Engine: Its not so much the game but the engine that was/is special. The Gold Box Engine is the grandfather engine for RPG games that brought us out of the MUD era and into graphical intensive RPGs of today. If you play games like Baldurs Gate, Dragon Age, NWN, Ultima Online, KoToR, or Witcher then you have played a game thats owes it origins to the Gold Box Engine.

Civilizations: Not the 1st turn based strategy but by far the best of its time. It put the army building strategy genre on the map.

Dune: Popularized the RTS genre. SC and others owe their popularity to this thing.

Certainly not the first 'professional grade modding kit.' There is, for example, Worldcraft for Quake and Half-Life.
