in a videogame? i dont know... But in real life it means to block a melee attack with your weapon, ie sword. And in fantasty mmo's parry means to block with your weapon against a physical attack.
So how is a "parry" different from a block with a shield? Does "parry" mean you block with a weapon instead of a shield?

Correct, think of it as if someone swings a sword at you and you hit it back with your sword. Parry is blocking with your weapon while parrying and swinging back in a smooth motion is a riposte Riposte :Fencing. a quick thrust given after parrying a lunge. http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/riposte
