Lets set Sonic the Hedgehog as an example.

Everyone first though it was good because there were so many trailers of Sonic going super fast and stuff plus some retro junk in the trailers.

Soon when its release. It's a glitchy mess where in even if you walk 3 steps, you die.

Its always the trailer or the license that really brings up the hype in games of today.

IMHO, what makes great games is a combination of orignality, prolific use of the engine, compelling story (for singleplayer) and great use or voice acting/Sound Effects.

The things that break great games are obviously bugs that don't get patched for months, online lag (for multiplayer), erratic FPS (frames per second), carrot on a stick mechanics, linearity, unlikeable characters, unpolished features, shipping delays, no marketing, boring set peices and unoriginal gameplay.

For me, its: For (good) Good, slightly addictive multiplayer (not WoW-esque) Optimization for older hardware Price Good graphics\sound (not saying that graphics>gameplay...) and gameplay Bad Bad optimization Too additive (think WoW) No marketing, or so little that it slips under the radar Delays (need I say more Duke?)

As long as a game is still fun to play I can look past alot of bugs, although as soon as there's either a showstopper bug, or I just hit something that completely takes away the fun factor, then that game is broken for me.

Good:

Engaging story that's well written,

Decent game play.

Bad:

Poor optimisation,

Bad voice acting,

Show stopping bugs (crashes to desktop etc).

all you need to have a top-selling game is put "Halo" on the cover and hype the hell out of it.

To have a game that isnt very interesting or exciting in any way and that has crappy multiplayer, put "Halo" on the cover.

Ill use COD4 as an example for the #1 thing that can completely ruin a game's multiplayer: Cheap stupid glitches in maps that are easy to get to that dont get patched. like i was playing in a game once on the map with the two sections of a city divided by a road (y'know, that one map....) and a guy got like 28 kills 1 death. he was hovering above the map with a barret....

so "hype" can make a TopSelling game and Glitches can break one.

The worst bugs are the ones that cause a game to crash. Broken quests are extremely annoying as well.

i really like your responses 1nverted and linkthewindow really have them down to a couple of areas, i only hope more companies would follow these basic guidelines when creating a successful game.
