Hello all. I plan on purchasing a new graphics card, and was seeing what would be a good replacement in the $40-$60 price range. I've thought about either the 9800 GTX, or Radeon 5570. I would hope to be able to play older titles like Company of Heroes at max settings, and newer titles with moderate settings.

System specs: (I aint' too knowledgable with PC hardware, so I hope I have all the info down)

PSU: H305N-00

Current Graphics Card: 8600 GT

Intel (R)

Pentium 4 CPU 3.00GHz

2.99 GHz, 2.50 GB of RAM

Thanks for the help. Appreciate it. :)

No point of upgrading that, you'll be bottlenecked by the CPU anyway

Well, thanks for the tip at least.

How could I upgrade my CPU without having to make any major purchases?

You can't. Your computer is too old. The motherboard will not be compatible with any new CPUs. You will need to buy a new CPU, Motherboard, RAM, GPU and probably a new power supply too.

Would probably be best to purchase a whole new computer then huh?

If I decided to replace the specific parts. What would be a good or decent replacement for the Motherboard, CPU, RAM, and GPU? I thought the 9800 GT and Radeon 5570 might be good for GPU, but I would love to hear some other options. Prefered price ranage for everything: Less than $250.

Thanks for the advice.

5570 isn't a gaming card, it's more for HTPC or multi-display in an office environment. 9800GT is pretty much bare minimum, for todays games. Older games will run well on it, newer games will really need the settings turned down (this depends heavily on resolution, however). $250 isn't going to get you anything much better than what you have, Windows and a HDD will eat up most of that, alone. You're much better off waiting until you have some more money, to put towards a computer.

Darn, well thanks for the information anyhow. Thought the 5570 might of been a good choice.

In the future, under a $600 budget, are there any good choices?

Honestly you would be better off building a Solid gaming pc for about $600. And with that if you ever wanted to upgrade anything on it you could easily do so.

Also if you have a microcenter near you they are having a great sale on i5-2500k/mobo combos

Going off Newegg (assuming you live in America), this is what you can get for ~$600. Rosewill CHALLENGER - $55 ASRock 970 EXTREME3 AM3+ - $90 SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850 1GB - $150 (free copy of Dirt 3) OCZ ModXStream Pro 500W - $65 G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) F3-12800CL9D-4GBRL - $30 AMD FX-4100 Zambezi 3.6GHz - $110 Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium SP1 64-bit - OEM - $100 That's $600, with free shipping. However, I left out HDD, cause HDD prices are insane, at the moment (I didn't realise they were so bad in America. A HDD on Newegg that costs $150, is $85 on PCCG). When HDD prices are back to (or close to) normal, you should be able to get a decent HDD for ~$50.

Wow! I'll definitely keep your option written down, especially at that price tag. Thanks a lot for the prices and tech.

Ossama224:

Considering it, if that'll work pay off in the long run. Got to first figure how to transfer all my documents and files over to a new hard drive. Just took a look at the sale, for $429, it's not a bad deal; does the Intel HG Graphics 300 a good graphics card? Thanks for the tip.

Intel HD 2000/3000 graphics are not graphics cards, it's a graphics chip integrated into the processor. It's good enough for high-res video and such, but for gaming, you will need a dedicated graphics card.

No the intel graphics suck thats why you need to get a graphics card. If I were you i would slowly buy the items that were a good deal with the money you have. When you get more money gather more parts. What is for $429?

Like the build, especially that choice for a graphics card in $600 budget. I was hoping to avoid the HDD altogether due to, as you said, price. When do you think prices may drop?

Are there any other brands than Rosewill that'll work at the price? Heard that Rosewill wasn't a good brand. Thanks again.

First thing you should do is subscribe to all of the online computer part stores email list so when they have a sale you can see the prices. Rosewill is a decent brand if you are trying to go cheap but there are other more expensive alternatives.

Actually i got an i5-2500k and a Gigabyte Z68AP-D3 mobo for only $230. You can build a beast and cheap rig around that.

Not really sure when prices will normalise, maybe in the next couple of months. I wouldn't suggest pairing an old, slow HDD with the decent parts listed above, at least, not in the long run. Rosewill is not a brand I would personally look to, however, there's not a lot that can go wrong with a case. The Challenger is a decent little case, for the price. I don't know much about the cases in that price bracket, however, if you want to spend a bit more, the Antec 300 Illusion (for $60) is a great case.

Only around 230? Saves me a lot of room, price wise, for parts and a great graphics card. I'll keep that option down no doubt. Thanks for the recommendation!

C-Rule:

Didn't expect the HDD would make such a difference in the long run. I'll consider it once the prices are reasonable. Seeing the Antec 300 Illusion is only 5 bucks more, I'll probably go for it, due to the quality. Thanks a lot for the help, appreciate it.

Since both you and Ossama224 recommend it, I'll probably just stick with the illusion, even if it is $15 more.

I have one near me, but I don't see anything on their site that I would consider an amazing deal. Then again, I am a novice when it comes to PC hardware.

Thing is, depending on how quickly you save the cash for it, these options may be changed.
