I ask this question because my current internet speed is rubbish and i was thinking about upgrading to a more faster connection. But i realised i have no idea what a good internet speed is. If someone could give me a general idea as to what a good speed is (mainly for playing online games e.g. WoW) i'd appreciate it.

(if it matter's i live in Australia and i'm also not quite sure what you measure it in. Mega Bytes per second?)

5MB is a good speed. However which ISP are you going to go with? If your In Sa go with Adam Internet or elsewhere TPG.

mine must be excellent.

also,

1 megabits = 0.125 megabytes

speedtest gives it to you in MEGABITS...I think.

something like 10Mb/s down and 2 Mb/s up is good enough.

obviously higher than that is better

I have like .5mb/s download and .25 upload. It's fine for playing games online and using internet. There's a feature where I can download something when Xbox ison standby, so I can download a 1.5GB demo overnight.

It just depends on what you are using it for. If you torrent all the time or are just downloading huge files...bigger the better. like 10mb on up. I personally have 3mb (stupid dsl in my area of town). Downloading can kinda suck on HUGE files, but gaming is absolutely fine. My cousin that lives in the country only has 1.5mb down 640 up...he also games fine.

I remember those days of waiting all night for download then I upgraded and can now download a whole game in a few hours worth the price for not having to wait a day to pay it.

I just said the line is rated at 5 mb/s, on speedtests they show up higher cause of powerboost :? I have Comcast as well, I like powerboost.

That is way enough for any game I know. Your ping is more important, that will depend on how close your server is that you game on.

Gaming uses very little of your internet connection bandwidth.

Uploading is important if you are hosting a game server, uploading files to the internet like pictures, music, videos, files, it doesn't effect playing a game that much, it relies more on your download speed. Upload speed does effect downloading if you are downloading from a ftp server though, and can limit your download speed if you have a very imbalenced proportion and say are downloading a file with the tcp protocal, you have to tell the server that you got it is correct, so it does effect downloading speeds a bit, but not that much. I personally care about upload speeds more, since I do a lot of hosting.

8Mb is the standard service on offer, yet ISPs rarely actually give you that speed - it's more like 3 or 4Mb

Ouch, a little pricey but I guess you get what you pay for. I think the best I could do around here is 20Mb@$70/month. It would be cheaper if you bundled it with TV but I can't stand TV:P

In Serbia, I have the classic Internet speed: 3MB. 6MB is 700 dinars more expensive (about 10 bucks), and 10MB is not available, except if you want them to limit how muich gigabytes you are allowed to download, which is terrible.

For 100 dollars a month you can get a 50/10 connection, which I almost bought.

Bit pointless if someone advises you to get something that is beyond your price range isn't it ? Find the ISP that provides you with the best upload/download speeds at the best price you can find or afford.

It helps if the line contention ratio is low too.

Australia has the worst Internet I've ever seen, with ridiculous monthly caps, I find 250 gigs too low right now, I'd never ever want to go to Australia... just because of the horrendous Internweb.

Wow, it seems like most of you have much faster internet than I do, and yet I am 100% satisfied with my speed. Other than servers and hosting games, what else do you all use your tremendous speeds for.

My speeds are pretty good for where I live, rural Virginia. At least I live in a little town with DSL available, my buddy lives way out in the sticks, and his options are dial-up, or satellite. While the satellite is faster, with the extra lag, it makes gaming all but impossible for him.

Now this cost me $50 a month, for an extra $10 a month I could go from 5M down to 10M down, but the upload would only go from 768k to 896k, just not worth it, IMHO.

I know. Im not sure why. The highest i ever saw it was around .9MB. Im not sure why it is not higher. But I have called them and they said that was normal. But I game with no lag and can download extremely fast. Sometimes i wonder if it looks like im lagging to other players cause my upload is so slow. When really im seeing them before they see me. idk...

for upload ? hmm ? well i say you know.. 750KB/S to 1,100KBS isn't really good upload : you know people think 100MB/S Connection mean you have no choice to host better then a 25MB/S connection well that not true cause if the 100MB/S doesn't include higher then 750KB/S but you'r 25MB as 2MB/S upload . guess who host the game better ? since hosting is 90% upload package and someting near 10% for download package to send them package

I meant the upload speed in kilobytes, not kilobits.
