I went from a 386 25Mhz to a AMD 1600+ clocked at 1.2Mhz. One was made in the 80's and the other in early 2001 I think.trasherhead
 Now that is self-control!
We had a Celeron 400MHz until I upgraded to a Athlon 4000+ in early 2007. So that was around 8 years. But I'm a little more regular now. Upgraded to a Phenom 2 X2 550 in early '09, and now I'm looking to upgrade that.
Graphics card are probably every 2-3 years.

If you had a celeron 400mhz, those were released in 1999. so doing the math... 2007-1999 .... that would make it 8 years not 15-20.
2.26ghz pentium 4 > q6700 2.67ghz, what a bump in core clocks eh? I had to use my brothers computer a lot between those time.
Ill hang on to this for another year. This one last me a heck a lot longer in terms of performance.

Ah yes, my mistake. I was thinking of the computer we had before the Celeron 400mhz.

It's possible for a CPU from the 80s to fit into a motherboard made in 2001? Or do you mean you bought a whole new PC?
Wow someone with a pony avatar and signature asking a super ignorant question. I am so shocked.
i went 5 years with the following specs:
intel pentium IV 2.6ghz
1.5gb ddr-400
ati radeon 9800 xtx GE 256mb
windows 98 SE
to this:
intel pentium D 2.8ghz
2.5gb ddr2-667
sapphire hd 2400pro 512mb
windows xp MCE
i then went another 4 before getting a much more beefy system.

Wow, a hater hating for no needed reason at all. I am also shocked...
I'm no professional when it comes computer hardware. I had major doubts that it was possible at all, but since I have no idea what sockets any motherboard used prior to about 2006 (when I got into computer gaming), I was simply asking a question. For all I know motherboards from the 80s used the same CPU sockets as motherboards from early 2000. As stupid as it may sound to someone who's known these things for years, I honestly don't know myself. I didn't see any need to look up past hardware specifications when I started PC gaming.
Probably the longest was when I got the Creative Banshee 3dfx. It was one of the first video cards which combined 2d and 3d... before that you had to do some terrible link up between your 2d card with a 3d card like the voodoo. I used the Banshee 3dfx from 1998 to maybe late 2000 when I think I got another Voodoo card just before they stopped making them... I think it was the Voodoo 3000.
I still use my 3dfx banshee in my old DOS/WinME k6-400mhz PC i have... its about the only 3d card I have that is compatible to play the few DOS games that did use 3d. Carmageddon for example had a 3d exe file you could run 3d models in the game... as did Syndicate Wars (Syndicate 2).
I usually get a good CPU and a medium GFX card, I upgrade my GFX every 3-4 year and my CPU around 5-6 year. Last CPU was a P4 3.4 I think and I only changed it cause my system was just going in a boot - reboot cycle that I could not stop with out turning the power off at the switch but I was due a new card so I just did the whole thing - Had my new system coming on to 4 year and upgrade my Card before xmas as my psu died and killed my card.
1.6ghz pentium 4 laptop to my current rig. Although i'm young so it's not saying much. I've had this one for nearly 3 years though.
still have a 2005 HP comp that im using :( has same cpu but has a 1950 radeon which is still crap. i game a crap load on this thing 2. really need new parts
