Morrowind, without a doubt!

Nothing beats that atmosphere of being on Vvardenfell, striding through the landscapes while the main theme played...

...the sheer unlimited number of possibilites of spells, combinations, things you could do, places you could explore, that awesome main story quest....

And it still looks pretty neat till today. One certainly can see that it has aged, but it aged well and doesn't hurt the eye the slightest. In fact, some of the areas and the atmosphere they create with it's graphics are unrivaled till today, just have to think how amazing the lighting effect in the cellar of your Redoran House still looks. Oh yeah, and you COULD build 1 of three possible homes without any add ons :P

Not only that but $5? Not even Morrowind is that cheap on Steam.

Come on, what have you got to lose? 10-30 hours of your life to one game? Hey, it's ONE game. That's pretty small if you compare it to alll the other games that you've played.

Goyoshi12

Do you not understand what "go on sale" means?. Morrowind goes for $5 on Steam all the time. I have lost count how many times I have seen Morrowind on sale for $5 on steam.

Still quite a while to wait for, really.

And I have a nice big backlog that I have to go through, so I couldn't care less how long the wait will be. I am guessing either during the summer sale or the winter sale of this year. I have a good year before I would be able to play it anyways, so really, there is no wait for me.

Hi.

I can see why Bethesda has everything voice acted. Apparently there were misunderstandings if it was just text.

Hi.

That and barely anybody would read the text because a lot of the NPCs "said" exactly the same thing and made talking with everybody about the same thing pointless and made all the NPCs feel just shallow, lifeless encyclopedias. Not that Oblivion's citizens weren't at times shallow and lifeless but at least the were voice acted (even if by similar people) and if they did have something that you had already heard from another NPC then it would be colored grey so that you didn't have to hear the same thing over and over and over again or, in this case, read the same thing over and over and over.

Skyrim is great and I have put probably way more time into it then Oblivion, because Oblivion screwed me over quite often. My first two characters became vampires and just when I was going to deal with it after ditching the first I walked through a door with literally no health and instant death with only one save. Then months later I returned got farther then ever and then in one of the oblivion gates there was a timer and my only save was with me with 10 seconds left. After that I gave up, but the world was huge and I did most guild and side mssions and it was fun as hell. Skyrim is amazing but I dont know why as much as I enjoyed it Oblivion is the best. I still need to play morrowind so maybe that will be my favorite.

Is that the game's fault, though? I mean, really, in any game just going through on ONE save is not a good idea as it can lead you to some screw ups in terms of both glitches and difficulties. Or is this a case where you had others saves but for whatever reason it deleted those saves and not these hard difficult ones?

Yes, it maybe my fault at times and I am lucky this issue that really effected me was addressed in Skyrim. I had other saves but sometimes I would just go off of auto saves and normally only saved in dungeons and times I expected a risky battle, but I am usually hoarding items, crafting items, and sell them for a large amount of time, In Skyrim I do this and I believe I have 600,000 gold, with the occasional roaming around outside. For my vampire for my last save was 8 hrs before last auto save, but my one that had the 10 sec issue was only 3 hrs before the auto. I was fed up after that and just gave up. I still have not beat it to this day, but maybe I will now that I have it on PC.

If you enjoyed the time in Oblivion before the unfortunate part then I say give it a go again. There are some small things in Oblivion that are absolutely worth it and are slightly better than some of the things in Skyrim; especially if you have the Shivering Isles Expansion Pack.

Morrowind was my first one and my favourite core game. I REALLY enjoyed the Shivering Isles expansion, even if it carries some of Oblivions' core problems to the intriguing and eerie isles..

Tried Arena and Daggerfall, even played Arena till the...5th or 6th dungeon or so...no idea how far exactly but a fair amount, gotta say, game mechanics wise, gameplay, graphics...that all is heavily ancient, but the music and atmosphere it creates can easily hold up till today.

That feeling when you walk out of the bandit filled towns night rainy streets into a warm and cozy tavern along with the very thought-inspiring text telling you you're safe now is one of those moments I really kept in mind ^^

But yeah, just for the sake of playing them they aren't really worth it, at least Arena. Haven't played Daggerfall much except from the starting dungeon just to see if it runs, didn't want to start with DF until I've finished Arena, though that may never be the case....^^

Shivering Isles is one of the things that make it better than Skyrim, but I sadly did not adventure around as much as I would have liked. I have been wanting to play the PC version for a while but joystick does not work properly on PC and I wont have a proper setup (desk) until the end of summer to play with a kb/m comfortably.

I've played Oblivion and Skyrim for over a thousand hours each, so it would have to be one of those.  The main reason is that they have such interesting worlds to explore, and you never know what you're going to find around the next corner, or stuck out in the wilderness.  I'm an explorer at heart, so that sense of freedom and discovery appeals to me.  I also love archery and stealth, and I think Bethesda managed to get those aspects right in both of these games.

If I really had to choose between them, I would give a slight edge to Oblivion GOTY, modded with Oscuro's Oblivion Overhaul and a few others.

AncientDozer

Coming from Morrowind, I thought Oblivion and Skyrim didn't have much to reward exploration at all. In fact, Oblivion did nothing at all and Skyrim did very little.

I feel like this is total bull and sh-- Uh, Bovine Scatology. I've explored each and every game and enjoyed it thoroughly. When people bi -- complained about fast travel and how it ruined the game. . I was there to point out that I didn't stop exploring. Fast travel just made life less obnoxious when you wanted to jump back to town to empty your inventory or fix things. Contrary to what some might think, walking back and forth on the same path isn't fun if you do it repeatedly in a row. Otherwise I explored the map pretty thoroughly. From Anvil to Leyawiin, Markarth to Riften. I found all kinds of cool shi-- stuff. . . along the way. The so-called "hand holding" didn't ruin any of that. I made my way off the beaten path and found a variety of things that really impressed me.

I hear that.

I remember my first playthrough of Oblivion I was just spamming the hell out of the fast travel system which I fully regret as I feel I missed out on so much the first time playing through. Now I've learned my lesson and am on my second playthrough of Oblivion and traveling the full distance from one city to the next and just exploring the wild and it is a LOT better than the fast travel system. That's not to say I don't use the fast travel system, there may be days where I just don't feel up to the outdoors and am a little bored with constantly going back and forth frmo one area to the next and in that case I will absolutely use fast travel. It's still a great system, it's not forced upon you and is there if you need it and is there for those who maybe don't like the exploration of the Elder Scrolls games. I gotta say, as great as Morrowind's world was it was just way too big and infuriating at times and it just got boring going from one place to another. I'm very happy that they cut back in Oblivion and Skyrim to make it much more managable while still being just as rewarding and fun.

I don't get what you mean by that. Skyrim has loads of patches and mods by now and there aren't that many technical issues as you're assuming (since you haven't actually played it). I noticed that you've sunk over 100 hours into The Witcher and thats a much buggier game.

I don't care that is was patched. It ran like crap when it released. And I never had any issues with The Witcher other than some lag in the swamp area. I am not holding off because I think the game still runs like crap. I am holding off because it ran like crap when it released and that's something I don't support. So in turn, it is a $5 game.

How would you know that it runs like crap if you haven't actually bought it yet? I can tell you that it runs extremely well considering how good it looks and how small the download is.

No complaints about fast travel here, you guys missed the point absolutely. I just mean that Oblivion and Skyrim's world doesn't offer any incentive for exploring. They are big, and relatively empty aside from monsters generated to suit your level and a few unique NPCs here and there. For example, in Oblivion or Skyrim, you won't find unique gear hiding in crevices - or hidden areas requiring levitation or a jump potion to access. Or anything like that really. Morrowind has lots of interesting quests, gear, and unique locations that actually are interesting to explore. What did you find exploring Oblivion, hm? Mini-map marked dungeons? Zzzzzz :P

I barely found any dungeons in Morrowind (f*cking egg mines....) and those that I did I will admit had some cool things in them but I already had on great gear so all they were to me was money for my pockets and nothing more. The only memorable dungeon or hidden area that I found in Morrowind was this temple that had all these coins just perfectly aligned in almost a ritual pattern. I thought for a minute when I picked up the gold I would be fighting like Daedric demons or some kind of monster was going to suddenly spawn because I had upset the ritual balance of the coins; sadly that did not happen but it left me with a bigger wallet.

Also, I don't remember dungeons in Oblivion being automatically from the start on your Map, I still had to find them. On top of that the atmosphere in the Oblivion dungeons were much better than Morrowind; Morrowind had a few stand out points but for the most part every dungeon I came across in Oblivion was just eerie and tense. I loved it, crouching and walking along with a bow in hand checking every corner wondering what could be on the other side and preparing for an assault. Sure the pay off wasn't as good as Morrowind but I didn't mind as what I got in return was just great atmosphere and tension (at some points) and a great sense of what a dungeon is or should feel like.

I will admit, though, Morrowind had those shrines and those were kick-ass but still Oblivion had awesome dungeons (even if they did get a little repetative at times) and just had a better overall feeling to the game. Morrowind felt like they just shoved everything they could think of into it and then called it a day. Kind of funny how I've heard people criticize Oblivion and Skyrim for having "too much" content. Guess they never set foot in Morrowind or, hell, even Daggerfall.

Morrowind was my favorite, even though it's hard to go back and play today. The enviroment was just so damn unique and interesting, and I liked the questing a lot more. Compare how you become arch mage in Morrowind to Skyrim or Oblivion. No heroic sacrifice from the previous arch mage, no epic battle against necromancers or elves. Instead you kill the eccentric arch mage when he challenges you to a wizards duel. I think that says it all right there. Though I wil admit the Brotherhood guild and deity statues from Oblivion were also quite cool.

They were cool the first few times but then their intrest just wore off on me; I don't know. Going through all the dungeons and just seeing that all they really had that the other dungeons didn't was technology I just grew uninterested in them; still an awesome piece of history about the mysterious dunmer, though. Red Mountain I'll give, though, crazy place that is to go through and explore. Just....f*ck Cliff Racers. F*ck them, man. F*ck them.

I noticed that you've sunk over 100 hours into The Witcher and thats a much buggier game. biggest_loser

Are you seriously asking me that stupid ass question? How do you know the Earth is round when you haven't actually went around it yourself to know? You ask me a stupid question and I will ask you an equally stupid question. And I know it runs fine now, but that's not the point.

[QUOTE="biggest_loser"][QUOTE="AmazonTreeBoa"] No I am not joking. I don't support games releasing in beta form. To show my distaste, I am waiting til I can get it for $5.AmazonTreeBoa

The game ran for me on launch just fine :? so because some people had issues running the game your choosing to not buy it until it's dirt cheap? so is last light also a $5 game because it ran like crap on AMD?

Oblivion was the first game I played and it blew me away, and I just found out the fast travel feature mid game don't ask me why lol. The setting was awesome.

I never could get into Skyrim and I loved Morrowind too

Morrowind.  It has the most unique world and lore.

That said, the series has not evolved very much since Morrowind.

I suppose Oblivion because it was my first Elder Scrolls game, and I had never played anything like it.

But honestly, I can't play any game from that series anymore.  Just way too dull and uninspired in terms of gameplay.

Some my ass. A LOT of people had issues with it. And no, last light is not a $5 game because it is crap. Like I already stated once in this thread (yet you missed it), I have a big backlog to go through and can't be bothered with buying games at full price when it will be a good year before I play them. So I will just wait to buy last light until I can actually play it. Why pay full price for a game that will sit there for a year or more when I can buy it way cheaper when I finally get around to playing it? If I didn't have a backlog, I would buy Last Light today knowing what I learned last night about the dev team's working conditions. But, the backlog is there.

Never played morrowind.

I think oblivion had some more variety than skyrim, especially terrain and the map, but skyrim has much better magic.

Anyways everybody who likes Elder Scrolls should try the Nehrim: At fate's edge total conversion for Oblivion, it is masterfuly done, with voice acting and it packs a new story and quests that go for about 60 hours, it's really really great and it's a different experience, try it guys.

I just recently found out the team who made this are working on the sequel on the Skyrim engine, can't wait.

Allicrombie

pretty much this.

Yeah it does look realistic. if we lived in a world of squares.

Totally agree with you.  I liked Oblivion and Sky but Morrowind has got so much more to do and discover without holding you're hand.

I've only played Oblivion and Skyrim, and I think Oblivion is better.

My complaint with Skyrim is the stupid combat system. When you nearly finish off an enemy, the camera turns away to show your character killing your enemy in style, without your control. Just terrible.

My favorite TES game is also Oblivion. The atmosphere, the music, the feeling of adventure, the expansive world... It had it all. The games prior to Oblivion were too archaic for me and Skyrim lacked the magic that made Oblivion so special in the first place.
