Recently, I reinstalled Windows XP on my computer, not out of hate for Vista, but rather to see if it is still a viable operating system for daily use. Before this, I had been using Vista (and later the Windows 7 beta) for two years straight, without ever looking back at XP.

To my surprise, XP is still a viable operating system for gaming, given its universal compatability.

So, what do you game on?

Vista, but why did you even put linux there? Running games in wine/crossover is not ideal... they run slower, but compatibility is pretty good. Only problems with wine/emulators(wine is not an emulator) is that they are not low level, which in turn means they have a hard time acessing physical things on your computer like a pcmcia slot or an express slot. Anyway, vista is good I don't get all the haters.

Windows XP. Tried Vista a while back; in the end I wasn't impressed. Way too many problems with incompatibility and instability.

There are some games you can run on Linux natively, too. But naturally, most gaming there is done through Wine/Cedega.

Course a few native linux ones, except they are almost always open source= a windows build too.

i dont understand why people hate vista either. i game on it... also, if anybody somehow has windows 7 already (not the beta) let us know how games work on it. Actually even if you do have the beta let us know.

Yup, but what do you mean if someone has a real build of windows 7? It's always going to be in a beta for now... I mean Microsoft is still developing for it, it's not like they are holding it away from you, they update the beta regularly I believe. Sure there will be new builds, but they are not done and nobody has them except Microsoft themselves. I think windows 7 is going to be a nice really nice OS, but there is no rush. Also I get it for free :) MSDN baby.

you never know, there are some insanely savvy computer nuts out there. who knows, someone might have an advance release of 7 (highly doubted) but it never hurts to ask. And yeah, 7 looks real nice. also kudos on getting it free when its out.

Vista for now. I'll only migrate to Windows 7 if there are any compelling reasons to do so (DX11 perhaps?). If I didn't play games I would definitely run a Linux distribution though.

I currently game on XP and have stayed on it simply due to being comfortable to do so.

However i have Vista on the desk in front of me and im not keen on installing it. Im not a vista hater but my friend runs vista and is continually running into problems with certain programmes that work without issue on my xp.

I believe that Vista will have Direct-X 11, too. You can always stay with Vista if you really don't want to upgrade.

Hmm, my computer must be special or something. I never encounter any problems with vista at all.

Anyways, I game with vista 32 bit, home premium, service pack 1., DX 10 is awesome, and no problems.

Need some more votes, people! Statistics say that this is too small a sample, when compared to the size of the actual population.

For me, XP is doing pretty damn well at the moment. I feel somewhat dumb for having blown $160 on Vista now... Oh well.

Ya mine too. Except I use Home Premium 64bit SP1. I have an older computer that has XP pro SP3 but it needs a fresh install and I haven't gotten to it. I know I would have if I'd felt the need.

Vista 32 bit, not a single problem related to the OS. I don't see the cause for all this Vista hate, most of my games run better then they did in XP and the performance difference is mininmal when you have a gaming pc anyways.

Vista. Here's why:

Case for not using Vista -

  1. "Account Control" security feature is maddenning - yes it is. Turn it off, or use one of countless workarounds, and you're fine.
  2. It was rough when it first came out - you didn't think it would be? Redmond's been working on it for years, and it's fine now.
  3. Not much different than XP - yes, the feature set is approximately the same. But it's no less than XP, and in fact it's a little more. Windows 7 fixes that - it's loaded with niceness.
  4. Requires more system resources - show me a gamer who isn't constantly upgrading their machine. And it runs fast on mine, which is 5 years old.

Case for using Vista -

  1. It's a complete rewrite from a blank page - no weird old spaghetti code.
  2. Cleanest, most secure OS ever developed - yep. It is.
  3. Solid as a brick - the OS I'm typing this on hasn't crashed. Ever. And it's been years.

Last but not least -

  1. Redmond plans on phasing out old XP. Real soon. So we all Vista users now.

My laptop came with Vista Home Premium but after using it for about a month, I decided to do a complete reformat and install XP, and haven't looked back since. There were many things I hated about Vista, but the main reason why I got rid of it was because of a stupid driver error that would cause the Nvidia display driver to stop responding and games would crash and I would have to restart, only to have it happen 10 minutes later.
