I don't play many RTS games. I played LOTR : Battle for Middle Earth solely because I'm a LOTR geek.
 I understand from many RTS purists that BFME is kind of RTS-lite in order to attract newbies, but I've got to say that I thought it was a great game. The single player campaign was long and sprawling. Trying to build up your hero and general points to buy new abilities was quite addicting. The maps offered some good variety that really resembled the spirit of the movies (particularly Helm's Deep and Minas Tirith).
 BFMEII and its expansion were also good, although the single player campaigns were very short.
Homeworld.
Nothing has been as revolutionary and as intriguing as this game, at least in my opinion. Amazing story, unqiue gameplay (a third dimension? Thats cuuuuuuuuuurazy!), awesome units and production concept (mothership and carriers, asteroids, etc), and pretty damn good multiplayer.
Wow no one said any of the Command & Conquer games.. so i'm the first, mine are all the command & conquer games i'm more old school.Agent32
Agree with this guy...C&C series and especialy Red Alert 2 FTW best in the series for me and best RTS ever. Second comes Warcraft.Â
Warzone 2100Â its so sad no body knows :cry:

Ahhh I remember that game well. First game where you could design your own units and build them, and one of the earlier fully 3D RTS games.
Lol, I seem to rember the game came free off some magazine when I got it, it was great with the tanks with lasers and air units and stuff, I tried earth 2150 but that wasnt the same :(
Warcraft III (and expansion) for me.Though I hear the calls for Starcraft and do intend to play it in the near future.

The most under-rated RTS goes to Battle Realms.

[QUOTE="jayoliver"]Red Alert 2, without hesitation!StaatsFlo
Without a doubt the best RTS ever ;)Â
You have all listed some fantastic games. Great to see Harpoon get a mention! I tend to go with the newer games...even if some of the older titles broke the original ground.
The original poster made it pretty clear that he wants us to make some tough compromises and choose just ONE game to wear the one crown. RTS is now a huge genre with many different takes on the resource gathering / base building aspects of the model
With that in mind and since I love historically based games the best, I will also go with...
Medieval 2 Total War - Very well done and it looks great. The game comes with a lot to keep you busy for a long time...Just a great all round strategy game.
