I don't think it was Beth or Zenimax because Brink is priced at $50.

It's becoming the norm for various PC games from certain publishers.

They might have different expectations for Brink and Rage, so priced them accordingly. Also, this is the first game id has made since Doom 3 in 2004, they probably have to make a ton of money to make up for the expenses they had over the last 7 years. I seriously doubt Quake 4, Wolfenstein and Quake Live were enough to keep the company alive forever.

Just wait until it goes on sale. Here's hoping they don't pull a CoD on their pricing.

$60 before taxes ? no chance I am buying it til there is a price drop

DeViLzzz
Just pre-order it from d2d for 48$ during a 20% off, or search on Amazon just before the release, Portal2 was 35$ there while 45$ on steam. Unless you refuse to use online methods to buy games -.-.

Oh wow... another big budget game at $60. Suprise suprise...

I thought we would be used to this by now?

I guess we are entitled to cheaper games because we paid more for our gaming devices. Gotta love entitlements.

pretty much my feelings as well :P

the prices had to go up sometimes, we've been 50 bucks for what seems like decades (though I do remember paying more actually when I was a kid).

just be a bit more careful with your money. Buy 11 games a year instead of 13, etc etc

Or just get the game on deals. When people can get release game at best buys under retail, D2d rocking TON of coupon discounts on preorders or release games, Amazon doing major sells then you can easily get your games at release for prices you want these days.

It was kind of surprising, I was looking through some PC Gamer magazines from 2002-2004 and I was seeing game prices everywhere from 45 to 55 (Warcraft 3 was at 55 and not a special edition). I'm not sure if that was the common price, but yeah games have been around 50 for what 10+ years? It was about time they would increase by only $10. And as others have said, buy one sales and deals. I bet that on any game other than Call of Duty you got get it for $10 to $20 less in just 2 months (every game I've followed in the past year or two has done this). So the only reason you will be spending $60 is because you just "NEED" it on release day.

Whining again? why are you people looking at Rage anyway, because you clearly don't know that id games were always expensive? Want a fix? stop whining and wait a week, yes, a week, not a month or an year and you'll get it at the recommended price of 50$.

Thanks to the internet .. and distribution via download .. there has arisen a discount culture .. Valve, Direct2Drive, Impulse, GoG .. they all undergo discount sales throughout the week .. week after week .. to the point where you don't have to wait that long to pick up a game at a price you DO find reasonable.

I refuse to pay $60 for games now-a-days simply because I know within a week to two months .. it will be discounted .. and I can honestly say I have never played so many games for so cheap .. thanks to this discount culture that has popped up online.

The price is fine with me. Its supposed to have a 15+ hour campaign, co-op, and multiplayer so I think it will offer enough content to justify the price.

I'm raging at the fact that you're raging at Rage's $60 price. Like others have said here, wait for a deal. D2D's 20% happens like almost every month. Amazon.com drops great deals. It's not so bad...

No we are "entitled" to cheaper games on the PC platform because there is no 10 buck royalty fee being paid to Microsoft or Sony.

Wait a while for the price to drop, or buy it somewhere other than Steam. Steam usually has higher prices for new games.

Maybe Rage will provide 40-100 hours of sp replayability goodness, who knows... anyway neither are 60$ unless you refuse to buy the game via dd...48$ for both of them on pre-order. So this whole thread is a useless complaint.

Plus as mentioned by previous posters, D2D 20% off sales that seem to happen every other week now will help the cause. :)

First of all, I love Australia, but its really not that simple. I was lucky enough to live in Australia for 6 months about 10 years ago and it was almost a 2 AUD = 1 USD conversion. Now, its about 1 = 1. Meanwhile here, things have pretty much stayed the same as far as game prices go for a long time. Those huge changes in affect more than just game prices.

For example, what is your minimum wage? I did a quick look at it looks like it is $15 an hour. Its $7.50 here. Again double the difference so its not a surprise that games cost more.

Yet console games haven't gone up in price though have they ? Nope they are still $60 which includes a $10 royalty fee that PC gamers do not have to pay. Now if the publishers are arguing that costs have gone up they have to increase the price of the PC version to $60 then that is fair enough but I would've thought these increased costs would also affect the console pricing too and that should go up to $70. Oddly enough though they haven't done that have they.

Blame Zenimax/Bethesda then, or id for taking 7 years with 60 people (~42m if average game dev salary)

MS and Sony started off by selling present generation of consoles at a loss, yes a loss, even though one cost $600 at launch. The loss these guys took would have destroyed lesser companies.

There is no point to the console if it does not have a good gaming library, so MS and Sony are begging PC exclusive devs to come to their consoles, while refusing to bring their exclusives to the PC, why would they raise the price of their games, to ruin their console sales :?

My overall point is it does not help your console in the console wars if you start raising prices on your console or the games for it.

But the PC, aaahhhh, it perseveres despite market forces. :P

Your initial point was that costs have gone up so prices go up. I merely pointed out that the consoles would have the same cost increases but they haven't put console prices up by an extra $10. Besides it isn't set in stone that costs have gone up. I remember reading that EA are on record as saying that game budgets have peaked and they expect them to go DOWN. So rather than costs going up it actually looks like costs are going down but they still increased the price of a PC game by $10

You make your point well. I'm sure you already know this, but basically what has happened here is that game publishers have realized through testing the market (thanks a lot activision) that PC users are willing to pay what console users are willing to pay for a video game. Is it fair? Of course not. Is there any reason they are charging an extra $10 besides people are willing to pay it? Of course not. They are pocketing the extra $10 regardless of royalty fees simply because the market indicates that consumers are willing to pay $60 for a video game regardless of the platform or what royalties may or may not be received.

Let's complain about Steam charging full price for a digital product where no manufacturing, storing and shipping taxes are involved!

Or better, let's preorder Rage at retail for cheap. It's a Steamworks game. It's 25 pounds (the equivalent of 40 dollars) here.

I will try again,

  • Costs have gone up, its just a fact, but I concede inflation statistics depends on the Govt releasing them.
  • EA says game development costshas peaked, has after production costs peaked ie distribution costs, advertising costs, support costs... peaked too :? some of these costs indeed parts of all these costs, are beyond EA's control.

You also have not addressed my point. MS and Sony produced the present generation of consoles at a loss, that's a fact. They had to reduce the prices of the consoles even though they were losing money because of the competition, why oh why would they increase the cost of their games, can you imagine MS saying that games for the 360 are going to be increased by $10 in which market would they continue to exist, also used games sales helps consoles, where can I buy a used PC game.

I rarely buy games on day of release, and I rarely pay full price for them (especially those I know will offer short campaigns and low replayability). Wait for a sale, or find a competitive retailer, or leave it a number of months for the price to naturally fall as demand drops. There are many options available. Unless you need to get a game in order to play the multiplayer, in which case I would argue that you are probably getting a lot more value for your money than someone who has no interest in multiplayer.

And yes, prices on Steam are still artificially inflated, given that it is a digital service, but this is because the publishers want to keep inflated prices to maximise their own profit margins - they have fewer overheads at the end of the game development cycle because they're not producing/distributing as much physical material. I wouldn't mind so much if this actually meant some of those publishers were putting some of those profits towards more risky game development projects for the future, but most of them aren't. They're just feeding their SHARKholders...er...SHAREholders. *cough*

Greed drives the industry - as it always has. :P

If it is down to costs going up then why haven't they increased the console game price ? If it costs them $60 to make/manufacture a PC game then obviously it must cost them $60 to do the console version as well, then add on the extra cost of the console royalty fee which is about $10 and hey presto if it is down to costs then console games should be $70. The PC price increase is NOT down to costs increasing it is down to the fact they think they can get away with charging $60 since they do so already on the consoles.

EA says game development costshas peaked, has after production costs peaked ie distribution costs, advertising costs, support costs... peaked too :? some of these costs indeed parts of all these costs, are beyond EA's control.urbangamez

Yeah I see what you mean about distribution costs going up on PC titles, all those lorries don't run on water do they ? oh wait a minute at least 80% of PC copies sold are via digital distribution (not a lorry in sight there). As for advertising costs when was the last time you saw them advertise a PC game ? This is not a cost issue, the PC version is probably the cheapest version for them to actually make in terms of costs.

You also have not addressed my point. MS and Sony produced the present generation of consoles at a loss, that's a fact. They had to reduce the prices of the consoles even though they were losing money because of the competition, why oh why would they increase the cost of their games, can you imagine MS saying that games for the 360 are going to be increased by $10 in which market would they continue to exist, also used games sales helps consoles, where can I buy a used PC game.urbangamez

I never addressed it because it has no relevance to this topic. I am aware that MS and Sony sold their consoles at a loss initially this generation. They did this because they tacked on a 10 buck tax onto every game sold. So console gamers got cheap hardware but more expensive games. The PC user did not receive any benefit like that, we paid through the nose for our hardware and since there is no royalty fee I think it is only proper that we should expect our games to be at least 10 bucks cheaper than the console version because our hardware is NOT subsidised by game sales.

Why haven't they raised the price to $70 on the console version ? Probably because they know they can't get away with it, so they do the next best thing and raise the price of the PC version to make it on par with the console version despite the fact the console version has greater costs involved. So at the end the price increase is NOT down to costs increasing it is down to them doing it because they think they can get away with the new price tag on the PC.

Now judging by some of the replies on here it looks like they can and will get away with it too.

I was going to quote an earlier part you wrote, but this is pretty much the point I was going to make. Its not about what is fair or about what the corresponding console price SHOULD be, it is about what price people are willing to pay for games. They figure that both consoles and PC gamers are willing to pay $60 for games, but not $70. I think it sucks and I wish when MW2 was first released at $60 on the PC that it would have sold miserably and the price point would not have stuck, but that obviously did not happen. Other publishers noticed and thats when we saw Ubisoft and EA follow. Now, it is spreading further.

Oh wow... another big budget game at $60.

Buy 11 games a year instead of 13, etc etc

totally agree with all of this.. People just need to get over it.. and if they can't get over it, there are sooo many sales on pc games that it doesn't matter anyway.

Let's complain about Steam charging full price for a digital product where no manufacturing, storing and shipping taxes are involved!

Or better, let's preorder Rage at retail for cheap. It's a Steamworks game. It's 25 pounds (the equivalent of 40 dollars) here.
