What would be the best videocard to get for high end graphics. I know theres the 8800 but i don't know which one (GT, GTX, Ultra, etc.) and i know the 9800 is coming out. I need a card that has the best value fotr its graphics becasue I'm kind of on a budget. I wanted to get the Ultra but people said it would not be good for my computer. The computer needs a PCI express card.

Hp a1600n bought in dec 06

Specs (gaming specified)

Processor- AMB Athlon 64 X2 2GHz (going to upgrade to a 5000+ processor)

Ram- 3gb

Graphics (integrated) - Geforce 6150 Le (what I'm trying to upgrade)

I'd go with a XFX 8800GT XXX along with a Corsair 450VX power supply, as your current one couldn't run an 8800.

Im considering a similar card but it's theBFG GeForce 8600 GT OC ThermoIntelligence Video Card - 512MB GDDR3, PCI Express, SLI Ready, (Dual Link) Dual DVI, HDTV, Video Card, I too am very new at this and courious what the SLI is for....it has an SLI port on the card but I dont know what plugs into it....does the power supply plug in there. I have the same PC as Jsheehan1942 . I would imagine the power supply has to be SLI also. Please help.

The SLi port will only be used if you have a motherboard that can run SLi. SLi involves installing 2 graphics cards and having them work in conjunction with each other. If you had an SLi motherboard you could buy 2 8800GTs and link them together via the SLi ports.

This setup does sound cool, but the increase in performance is usually not worth the money. You're never going to get double the performance of a single card, and I've heard it's hard to achieve anything over a 50% increase in performance.

I run a simple flight simulator from RealFlight it's the G3.5, theres a guy I work with that runs this card and plays WOW, he said it does a great job, unfortunatly for him he bought it a local retailer and paid twice as much......and thanks for the reply on the SLI....I wont be going that route.

Ok, I've been looking at Tiger Direct....Would I be better off with the BFG GeForce 8600 GT OC ThermoIntelligence Video Card - 512MB...or should I consider the EVGA GeForce 8800 GTS Video Card - 320MB. the latter of the 2 is $20bux more but I would think the 8600 GT offers more....Your thoughts Please.

If you're going with nvidia the only logical choice is http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27704&vpn=512-P3-N801-AR&manufacture=eVGA its slightly slower than the best graphic card available for half the price. On top of that, its EVGA so you can use their step-up program and get a 9800 later on if you want. If you're going with ati I'd get http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=27743&vpn=H387QS512N&manufacture=HIS however the 8800 gt is the better card and is the same price. Don't even consider getting the 320mb or 640 mb versions of the 8800.. they have less performance than the 8800gt and I'm pertty sure they still cost more. Hope that helps :)

Oh and for under $200 http://www.ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=26984&vpn=3850PE3256SB&manufacture=Diamond is the best card you could get. It'll max out pretty much every modern game with high fps with the exception of crysis which nothing can play maxed out. Although, you should really spend the extra $50 for the 8800gt.
