What will be after 1080p?

I first would just like to say that it's great to finally have a forum for Audio/Video hardware discussion.

I have heard the terms all the way up to 1080p where TV/movie viewing looks its best. 1080p resolutions have been around for at least 3 years now I think, before only as high as 1080i with some TVs or connectivity restricting this, but what next? It is said that after a certain TV size our eyes cannot comprehend the difference in quality but are people already wanting to advance past 1080p?

In the electronic world technologies advance so quickly to the point where we are now forced to constantly upgrade our TVs once every few years, if at all. This is because it seems as if as soon as we buy a new TV it becomes obsolete within a year of its purchase. Look at Sony and Samsung: Sony developed the OLED TV which has a contrast ratio of 1 million to one and Samsung currently at 500,000:1. Both these TVs' images can only still be upscaled to 1080p, even with the OLED's groundbreaking light-emitting technology. Will we see a technology advancing past 1080p in the near future?

I would say that no, modern households do not have the space for this suerprior resolution to manifest itself.

Not to mention that really the only way to get a true 1080p signal is through bluray, and I can't name one person I know in real life that has a 1080p television, let alone a bluray player (and yes, I do count Playstation 3).

I am saving up money for my 1080p television though, $500 in so far! :). I wish I got paid more than minimum wage this is taking forever. But my rant about taxes and modern living expenses is for another day.

I don't see much of a need for an increased resolution.

Usually with video, and distance sat, there's a limit to the detail you can see. No many people are going to have 100+ inch screens that would really benefit from over 1080p.

Though, for video games, you can sit closer to the screen and more detail is always better. But extra resolution at this point in the game wouldn't be much of an improvement over say better textures and enhanced anti-aliasing. If things are still jagged and blurry at 1440p not much of an improvement will be there since you are not using the resolutions full potential.

Thus, for the short future, 1080p screens with true blacks and other features would be god over more resolution, and games with full smooth anti-aliasing and sharper textures would make the games more lifelike and detailed, thus, more resolution isn't needed.

If you really need more resolution, go PC, get a 30inch PC screen, that's I think 2560*1600, about double the pixels of 1080p, then some kind of Sli setup with thousands spent on video cards.

yeah i agreed pc is always better and always gonna be because it always in constant progration but i hate it cuz its too damn expensive to keep up you know, with a console its easy buy the game and play it, but a pc game u gota get the right video card, and sound card its a pain, but it is ultra better.Liquid_93_Snake
