It's a basic question, with thousands of possible answers; no matter what it is, we want to know. What would you want to see in a FPS? Not to mention the complete opposite, What don't you want to see in a FPS. It's an open, no holds barred post; if you have an opinion, we want to hear about it.

Jumps all day (actual good and fun platforming that isn't based on silly tedious like a lot of physics based games), more weapons (railguns, lasers, rocket launchers) and much much much more imaginative worlds, environments and architecture.

Stories, settings and weapons are always the goddamn same and every time they go for more depth and realism and much more engaging stories they just usually ruin whatever's left good of the games.

All I really want is less marines in real-world locations (not to say all real world locations would be lame or that any out of this world location would be good) and less forced co-op/teamwork just for the sake of making you feel like you're "actually there".

I definately agree. I would love to have a game that is not based on spec ops groups where you are limited to a set path. I have been looking into "serious games" and simulations in lieu of looking to a way of offsetting that issue. Personally, as an independent developer, avid gamer and combat veteran, I feel that there can be much more of realistic feel interjected into a war based FPS. Something where it is not set on only one pathway, having the possibility of multiple endings and having it based on the players method of playing and decisions along the way. If there could be more interaction, possibilities and methods to carrying out a mission, taking charge of the group and exposing the player to more realistic scenarios; that I believe would be a great avenue to run with.

Frostbite would be an awesome platform to experiment with. Currently we have been running with CryEngine and I must give Crytek some credit in lieu of the look and feel of things. Further more, let me take the time to explain why we have posted this thread asking these questions. We are currently working on two independent games; one of which is based on an indie film in which we co-produced this past year. We wanted to take that concept and step it up a notch in the realm of apocalyptic based games. The second of which, we wanted to be an exposure into war. I have played several war based FPSs (ranging from the Call of Duty franchise, Battlefield franchise and loads of others...even including America's Army (which I am usually somewhat reluctant to admit)). With all of those games that I have experienced, they do not branch off into how war actually is. With that being said (and although I have my own "wish list"), our desires is to find out what gamers really want in a FPS (something that I feel big named developers don't really listen to on the level that we want input. Now, I know that we will not be able to use every idea or incorporate everything in one mash up, but this is where gaming should start; listening to fellow gamers.

I'm a sucker for Science Fiction, so something around those lines with the Frostbite engine (don't know why I love that engine so much), I want Destiny to be good but I'm gonna be skeptical about that game tell I see gameplay footage.

I'd like to see something similar to DayZ, except set in a universe similar to STALKER. I'd like huge maps with 100+ players per server and gun play on the level of Red Orchestra 2's.

I never liked the feeling that I'm the only one actually doing anything in a game, gunning down hundreds of enemies by myself. Sadly I can't think of many games that avoid this issue or any that do so well.

Meh, I'd had enough of WW2 after CoD2. I've been tired of modern settings as well for a while now. The future truly has endless potential. I suspect past/modern settings are so common because they don't actually require imagination to make.

Also, railguns are awesome. :D

I think as in a good story that actually has some depth and isn't minimal. So far, the only FPSs in existance that I consider to actually have a story are BioShock and Chronicles of Riddick (note: i consider deus ex an rpg not a fps)

Crisp and tight movement and jump mechanics

All of that is what I want inside of an updated game that has good graphics.

more right wing/patriotic storylines and themes and more gun violence, blood and gore. if this happens maybe dianne feinstein will jump out of a window and kill herself over it.

Hmm...

What I would like is a good community.

 

I get so sick and tired of seeing people that think they are so good, that every time someone kills them they make up these excuses.  They proceed to complain about viable tactics in these games like moving slow, or camping.  (yet will turn around and spawn-rape anychance they get)

 

 

Other than that, I would say good optimization, balance. 

Mod support, so we can build our own freaking levels, stagnation of maps is one reason why many FPS games die out quickly. 

One of the reasons that COD4 was the hit it was!

 

 

How about not full price, for yet another expansion pack so investors can make a return profit. 

 

A game where gameplay, and gunplay are a high priority, instead of relying on franchise name, or associations to sale.

Pretty simple, more open world, more RPG elements, more depth. FPS games have an immersion advantage yet they fail to use other elements that extend that. I'd also like to see ideas that Bulletstorm came up with used although not the same way. Just make people think about how they are killing enemies, change it up. I think FPS games should move away from scripted battles and only code the elements around it so if battles happen they are random occurrences based on events. On a basic level I want to see the merger of Skyrim meets STALKER meets Crysis meets Bulletstorm. I want the small elements of combat to be satisfying but the overall picture to be deep, engaging. I want physics elements, I want stealth, I want resource management, I want to be scared of encounters and come back later to them. Also quick save and save anywhere. checkpoint saves are the devil.

Singleplayer: Depends on the kind. I really enjoy the way Deus Ex did it with hub like areas and you could approach the missions differently. STALKER had a very interesting world, lore, and atmosphere. And with both of those games, customization options played a large role. For linear fps: bioshock is a good example of story telling. Combat is a bit harder to do, as running straight and shooting isnt fun for long. Either way, i like options for customization, particularly active ones rather than passive (active being you can now throw fireballs vs passive being you have more health)

 

Multiplayer: We need more team based ones. TF2 does it right. You aren't just perfecting your aiming but rather learning about all the other elements in the game.

^ That, very much that and I would probably play more FPS games. I just want something cyberpunk/Scifi with open world cities and space combat like Battlefront 2.

Lots and lots of weapons, balanced upgrades, a good ranking system, good multiplayer and single player, a real story (meaning a good one that makes alot of sense and loveable characters), good physics, good hit registration, an amazing atmosphere, several multiplayer modes, server browser, REAL WEAPON SOUNDS, cool weapon sounds, creativity and detail in level design, DECENT SYSTEM REQUREMENTS!!!!!, simple and easy controls, good ambient sounds, easy to access cheats for SINGLE PLAYER ONLY, a long single player campaign, a good anti cheat system.

The bad FPS - Call of Durty and BF3 The good - Halflife , some parts in Bioshcok Infinite. So in the end the thing i would like to see is a captivating story with good gameplay mechanics. And what i dont want to see is a multiplayher game trying to be a single player game like COD-series and BF-series

What I want to see:

- Good written stories

- Option to play co-op (Same single-player campaign and other special modes)

- INCLUDE split-screen on PC (Not just on the consoles) Better yet, include it on all platforms. 

- Mod support (Give the players to create our own stuff.)

- Break the 32 Vs. 32 player limit. Rather have it at 500 Vs. 500.

- Have likeable characters across from all regions, human or alien.

 

What I don't want to have:

- Overpriced map/weapon DLC shoved down all of our throats. Have that crap already included within the game from the start. (If needed, delay the release date.) I don't want to buy into a demo-esc version (Battlefield 3)

- How every modern game is tied to some BS online DRM tactics. Everyone is forced to have an account in order to play (legally). Ditch Steam, Origin... etc. All I want is to put the disc in, hit setup, enter the serial number, install, and be done. Have the choice of not requiring these services.

combine the open world as well as the time of day aspet of Dayz, with the classes, weapons/items and teamwork of TF2, and the mass player count of of Battlefield

  • FEARs combat. I'm sick of FPS games that don't get the shooting right, shouldn't be happening these days surely
  • Lengthy
  • Lots of combat with unpredictable pacing
  • No modern day gimmicks like regen shields, 2 weapons only, few bullets, highlighted objects and over-done cut scenes
  • Memorable soundtrack, something from Frank Klepacki who made the Red Alert and Deus Ex soundtracks.

Okay, let me recap thus far: SP - Less restrictive maps, good story line, knowledgable AI, wide variety of weapons systems and vehicles, immersive war/fighting scenarios, logic based platforms, true ability to push playable difficulty, decent weapons physics, 100% savability and a FPS/RPG crossbreed. MP - Less restrictive maps, wide variety of weapons systems and vehicles, no perk cheats, decent weapons physics, SDK map building option, decent co-op possibilities ability to run LAN party as well as internet, and integrated tactics. Sound about the gist?

Same here. I honestly don't know if they are still working on Survarium. It's suppose to be like a Stalker MMO. But I agree with everything you said.. that would be damn cool. I wouldn't mind being able to find buildings and homes and turning them into housing or forts. With the ability to change into third-person if you want, but first-person shooter design like DayZ.

Creating a great story. Really, that's what I cherish most in video games. Of course I want to play a fun game, but for me, the true reward lies in the storytelling. I get super excited when I hear a particular game has that immersion. Gunplay is important, but it doesn't excite me as much as it used to.

I love Metro 2033, Bioshock, Deus Ex for the atmosphere and story and I'll always remember those games and have great memories.

No offense but maybe you guys are into the wrong hobby. Games have pretty poor stories and storytelling. I don't even think I could compare some of the best stories in gaming to mediocre books and movies, because games are that far behind (in that department). I can think of a few exceptions, but we're talking a handful of games among thousands. The stories in games are there to serve the gameplay, and that's that. I could recommend you guys a few books or movies that make Deus Ex or Bioshock seem like they were written by 12 year olds...KHAndAnime
I agree, that is the one issue that I have with the lot of mainstream games. Sadly, I feel (IMO) that it might be because of a bit of greed from the developer/publisher and an attempt to push a product quickly instead of actually developing [a game] the way they should. You do occasionally see game developers that to push the story line (kind of like Max Payne and Uncharted); but sadly it seems like they hold development meetings and (the big wigs) say: "we want running and gunning, fire, explosions and damage...worry about the story later...we'll make it work". You'll always have the extreme difference between the gaming world and Hollywood, but it wouldn't hurt to put more effort into it.

Opinions on theatrical cut scenes? Also, any opinions on not having set difficulty levels in SP (ie Easy, Med, Hard, Veteran, etc), but instead injecting a "learning" AI? [Starting out in an "easy" status and then (depending on the player's abilities and progression) ramping the difficulty.]Laythrom
Depends on the type of cut scene really. Sin Episodes Emergence did an automatic difficulty curve which judged your own play style and changed as you progressed. Unfortunately it had a few bugs that resulted in overly hard sections. It's very difficult to playtest a system that changes for everybody. Discrete difficulties are proven. "Elite" gamers love the ultra hard mode where the protagonist plays with a broken leg etc.

I agree, that is the one issue that I have with the lot of mainstream games. Sadly, I feel (IMO) that it might be because of a bit of greed from the developer/publisher and an attempt to push a product quickly instead of actually developing [a game] the way they should. You do occasionally see game developers that to push the story line (kind of like Max Payne and Uncharted); but sadly it seems like they hold development meetings and (the big wigs) say: "we want running and gunning, fire, explosions and damage...worry about the story later...we'll make it work". You'll always have the extreme difference between the gaming world and Hollywood, but it wouldn't hurt to put more effort into it.

I totaly agree, however I got no problem with Theatrical gameplay pieces so long as they don't render the player irrelavent the way non-interactive cutscenes do.

No offense but maybe you guys are into the wrong hobby. Games have pretty poor stories and storytelling. I don't even think I could compare some of the best stories in gaming to mediocre books and movies, because games are that far behind (in that department). I want it to be set during a war where I actually feel like I'm in a war. I'm sick of seeing games where you're a 1 man army or you have just a group of NPCs that never die. I want to be running across a battlefield, dodging mortar fire and seeing others getting blown up in the process.

they're in the wrong hobby in your opinion? you're in the wrong forum and on the wrong site. no one asked how you felt about gaming in general. go back to neverland and write the great story you don't find in games.

back on topic: in FPS shooter style i would also love to see a good civil war era game. the battlefields in this era of war were so littered with injured and dead combatants you wouldn't be able to withstand a huge emotional response if done right.

Here are some of the things I'd like to see in many FPS games...

Technical

- proper character model so when you look down you see your character's body and feet - no more floating heads
- see your hands when climbing ladders, reaching out to open doors, flip switches, pick up objects, etc.
- interactive environments - no more furniture glued to floors, immovable objects, unbreakable windows or doors, etc.
- map boundaries and barriers that make sense - not knee high obstructions that a child could climb over
- glass that shatters realistically
- hold weapons up when getting too close to walls/objects
- leave footprints on certain surfaces

Preferential

- character customisation or choice, including gender
- ability to use objects in the environment as weapons (see Dead Island and Condemned) or portable cover
- destructable environments (within reason)
- non-linear level design with freedom in how to approach objectives  (see Far Cry 3)
- jump, lean, crouch, prone, mantling
- ability to swim and climb (see Far Cry 3)
- ability to use stealth whenever you want (not forced)
- neutral NPCs you can help or kill
- non-standard weapon choices  (see Dead Island, Condemned, Half-Life for ideas)
- customisable weapons
- interesting game world to explore with secret areas
- use of vehicles  (see Far Cry 3)
- wildlife appropriate to setting

Tired of modern warfare - would rather see more interesting settings and/or time periods. :/
