X-com owns you, hard. Yes it is an old game but it is a great one. Give disgea a chance it is actually pretty good and has a good since of humor. I hear phantom brave is good, haven't played it myself. As for the PC the old commando games were pretty good. I can't rememebr which ones were good though. Both the fallout games are awesome, they aren't squad based but I think they fall under the realm of turn-based tactical rpgs.

The first X-Com game was the best...but it's less of an RPG and more of a RTS/TBS/Squad-Based Tactical Combat with RPG elements.

Other great turn based, tactical RPGs include the Fallout games (the second one is possibly my favourite non-linear RPG ever), and Silent Storm (which is brilliant, and features completely destructible environments).

Like Front Mission: X-com, Jagged Alliance 2 and Silent Storm. for more freedom of exploring the world(FFT like) try Temple of Elemental Evil(Don;'t mind the bugs reviewers are complaining about, patches, both official and fan-made have fixed those)

X-Com: UFO Defense (best game ever made), Combat Mission series, Fallout series...ect. Silent Storm is pretty amazing and shouldn't be too hard to find, you should look it up.

temple of elemental evil is a game that, for whatever reason, i keep playing. it's got very good turn based combat, and i think this is why i use it. the tactics involved, flanking, etc . . . fun. the bad things i find are that the level cap is 10th, and that the gui isn't completely intuiative. it is dated and old, and doing some things that are normal in some games are hard in this game. (shopping for instance sucks) if you pick up a new character to join your party then they start at 1st level. regardless of how good you are, as a team, or what level you are, new guys almost always start off at this stupid level. (save for some npc's)

read the faqs on this website writen by fans of the game to get more insight on it.

Temple of Elemental Evil has a great battle system...It's complicated though unless you know the DnD rules...which is something I don't know much about.

And your should try out Disgaea....the gameplay has a loooot more depth than FFT.

X com is good, although it is an old game. X com terror from the deep (Xcom TFTD) is good too, but a little harder than X com.

For non-rpg, Panzer General II is great, and can be bought for a bargain (it's older too, but not as ancient as x com). It strikes just the right gameplay balance.
