How long will plasma TVs stay on the market? Will they be phased out in favor of LEDs? I have a plasma you see, but it can only do 720p. In the future, I want to upgrade it to one that can do 1080p. I much prefer the look of the plasmas over the other formats. I've had my TV for less than a year so it doesn't make sense to upgrade right now. So, will I be able to buy a new plasma in the future?

Most likely. They will be around for a while, as new tech is always very expensive. The new thing to be pushed will probably be 4K sets, along with Sonys "crystal LED" tech. After that OLED will probably become standard, I think.

OLEDs will take over one day, but I think that day is still far away.

IMO plasma still holds there ground with picture quality.600hz,no inputa lag, higher contrast, better color,no motion blur, better bang for your buck....ect.i own a 42"panasonic viera plasma and it's full 1080p(1920x1080) and blows ANY other42" LED/LCD out of the water.i think plasma will stay around until OLED is standard.but this is my opinion because i do not own a cristal ball

Plasma isn't going anywhere. With most professional A/V reviewers still selecting plasma as the reference display to compare everything else against, LCD still has work to do to produce an an equal picture at a better price.

That is changing however as the very best LCD/LED's are matching the Top end Plasma's. However, where you nailed it was the price factor. You can get a Plasma that has similar or better quality at a much cheaper price. In terms of the middle road, Plasma has that dominated...but it's not like LCD's are ugly.

I disagree. I have yet to see an LCD set that doesn't have that lcd "trail effect".

***Anybody have any info on the Sony "crystal LED" tech? From what I heard, though I could be wrong, each pixel is a tiny LED?

The new Elite and Sony's newer XBR's have both been hailed to match or exceed the very best plasma's (CNET, Home Theater, etc). The Con, they are a good deal pricer. Doesn't matter though, OLED's will overtake both in the long run.

I just bought a Samsung 51" Plasma 3D Smart TV and I GUARANTEE it will DESTROY any LED or LCD in its class!!! 4 HDMI, 2 USB, PC in and LAN connection. The TV is about 3/4 of an inch thick and has about only 1/2 an inch border on all sides!! Got it for the grand price of $976 on sale!! It the Series 6 6500 model if you want to look it up. So no, Plasma is still the best picture available for movies, games and sports. LCD's and LED's are over priced trash!!

The only LCD in the the same tier as the best plasmas, is the Sharp Elite (they didn't pay pioneer a small fortune for that moniker for nothing). That being said it has some traits that are better than the best Pioneer Kuros plasmas and some traits that are still worse. I think for the next couple of years, plasma will still be the best picture for the money and will ultimately be surpassed by OLED if the price can be brought down.
