Sorry for being a noob, I've never play any Duke Nukem games before, I don't even know how many are there in the series.

It's looks like any other FPS and the main character is cheesy as hell... Am I missing something?

You had to be there I guess... Duke Nukem 3D changed my concept of gaming from Oregan Trail-esk text based adventures to pure 3D ownage with a side of classic comedy. Pure nostalgia

The cheesy, mindless, over-the-top, low brow, overtly sexist, testosterone-fuelled, all-out action nonsense is precisely what makes a Duke Nukem game a Duke Nukem game. It's all very much intentional, tongue-in-cheek humour. It knows it's low brow and cheesy, and it loves it.

The themes in Duke Nukem Forever are the entire point of a Duke Nukem game. They're the only things that Duke Nukem has ever set out to achieve, and it does them better than any other game that has ever tried. It's the way FPS games used to be, before Half-Life and Call of Duty came along.

If you want to see the point of it, just don't take any part of it even slightly seriously. At all. If Call of Duty is Saving Private Ryan, then Duke Nukem is Die Hard.

To put it simply, adult jokes, alines that look like a mix between cops and pigs. Get it? Or simply funny stuff that dukes says along the way. Did i mention you can pee? Or that you can freeze enemies and break them, or give money to strippers to show you their "assets" or shrink enemies and step on them?

He reminds me of that cartoon character Johnny Bravo.

By the way Duke Nukem 3d Atomic Edition is available on Gog.com pretty cheaply.

Duke lives every real man's fantasy. He saves the Earth all by himself, he looks incredibly good, he gets any woman he wants and he's rich.

Also Duke 3D had brilliant level, weapon and enemy design and a level of interactivity that most games still don't match.

For one, Duke has balls of steel. It's not often that a video game character has balls of steel.

Oh boy... that almost looks like how "the original" DNF was meant to look! The power of mods, really impressive.

It's one of those "You had to be there" games, for younger games it's just a shooter with some one liners thrown about. For the older gamers who were there when it came out, it was one of the most awesome things ever as it was a shooter with adult humor that never took itself seriously.

A sense of humour, apparently. :P

Seriously though, Duke 3D was charming because of its cheap, over-the-top humour. Back in the day it was a pretty awesome shooter due to its environments and awesome weaponry. It'd be hard to explain its appeal to someone who never played it when it was new.

The high rez looks good, but messes up the sound, I got Duke3D from Gog.com, a game from my past.. loved it beat it, all 4 episodes, on Come Get Some, while I was out-of-town recently, I downloaded it onto a pc they had there. Was still pretty damn fun this play through as well.

I agree with this. Was never a fan of the first duke nukem but Duke Nukem 2 was god damn epic back in the days. Loved that game. Then Duke Nukem 3D came out and my head asploded from the pure awesomeness. What other game (at the time) could you throw money at strippers for a good time than blow them away?

I'll just copy what I've posted in another topic>> What you seem to be missing is how it's all a big parody. Duke acts and lives in a world that all implicit things in gaming are explicit, it takes stupid elements from games that take them seriously and show how they are ridiculous. Men in shooters are always the stereotypical "alpha male", a totally sexual and sexist concept, but they can't be shown as sexist nor violent. Duke is an a***ole who likes girls, guns and gum. Women in most games look like hookers or strippers, but you can't have hookers or strippers in a game.... Duke has strippers. Monsters are ugly in all games and are killed in cruel ways. Duke says "Damn, you're ugly" and then laughs as they die. Shooters have violence as a fun factor. Duke has fun while killing and he does it with over the top gore. There are games that praise themselves for interactivity, but you can't use the toilet! Duke Nukem pees. Monsters with "sexual parts" are common nowadays (Dante's Inferno, anyone?) but you can't talk about it "because it's a serious game". Duke seems to be the only character in today's games that notices those sexual parts and on top says "Hell, I'd still hit it" Most of all, games take their dialogs soooo seriously and most of the time they are so bad, just plain horrible. Duke has bad voice acting and extra cheesy one-liners and he knows it. It's all a big parody, this trailer even makes fun of itself with "after 12 **** years, it should be!".

Serious Sam was created as a happy marriage between DOOM/DOOM 2 and Duke Nukem 3d. It mostly gets things right....but to me they don't touch DOOM 2 and Duke Nukem 3d

The adult humor wasnt the main draw. Its one of the most innovative games of all time. First game with destructable environments and interactivity. First shooter with melee afaik. I remember playing dm and locking a player in a room and then fragged him with a grenade through the window.
