IMHO this Q is impossible to answer. Back when PCs were DOS machines with limited graphics I loved text adventures. Now I love games like Crysis. I don't feel either is better than the other, they all rock!
this question cannot be answered. Think about all the different genres and time spans of games. Then think of how people think about games ( for example some younger pc gamers might think older games suck like Starcraft because it doesn't look pretty ).
Best package - The Orange Box. But, my favorites so far would have to be, The Witcher, Mass Effect, Warhammer Online, Warcraft III, Starcraft, COD WAW, World of Warcraft, just to name a few. I guess I don't really have a favorite, but if I had to choose, it would be World of Warcraft. I just had the best time on there, while it lasted. Runner-up would have to be Starcraft.
WoW probably..when it first came out nothing was better...I will say that Half life 2 was equally breath taking in its time...Half life 1 and Doom aren't too shabby either..nor is Starcraft..haha there is wayyyy too much to pick
Deus Ex - Played through this game so many times and it never gets old. I'd say that's a hallmark of a great game.
Runner up: Quake 2 - Use to play the hell out of this game, both single player and multiplayer. There was a huge community that produced single player maps, some of them were simply amazing. Some people were able to make level designs that made the guys at id software look like amateurs.
I agree that this is a tough question to answer. It should be rephrased to "What's your favorite game ever?" I'm guessing that's what most people are answering. In this case, I would probably have to say Diablo II.
I wuld have to say my personal favorite PC game of all time is Rome: Total war then Starcraft, Age of Empires 2, COD4, Far Cry, COD, and finally Battlefield 1942. Also if Freedom Fighters had a great multiplayer it would be on this list.
It's not my favourite game of all time. There is a difference. My favourite game would be Deus Ex. But, by all standards, Half-Life 2 is the best game ever made. An enormous amount of thought went into that game. It's very much taken for granted now.
New Pc games are all mainly overrated and terrible. Not all, but most.

btw, what's the deal with all of the half-life 2 love? most overrated game of all time if you ask me, the first one was ages ahead of it's sequel in terms of innovation. I'm not saying it's bad, because it's great. Just not as good as the original by far.
