Play Half-Life: Opposing Force instead. I actually thought that was the better game because it had better environments and better weapons.

hoola

I agree. It's arguably the best expansion ever made.

I'm rather surprised that people don't rate it highly here.

To be honest, I didn't finished the game until last year. And when I did, I find it to be the best single-player fps experience I've had, even compared to newer games with better graphics.

OP likes Halo, problem solved.

HyperWarlock

This is the correct answer. Tells us what we need to know. OP, you may not like this game. The game is 14 years old though.. It's not going to seem as great as it did back then. It was revolutionary at the time. It isn't today.

People are hating on the fact that he likes Halo, but you have to remember how old Half Life is. It's not like an RPG where the writing can still shine. Half Life was amazing for it's time, there's no debate about that. It defined many of the things we have today in shooters. However, IMHO, it has not stood the test of time. It does feel dated. It has a solid plot, but not to the extent of Fallout or BG.

Never got into it, thought it was overrated. But HL2 was epic. Bioshock got rave reviews and I thought it sucked too, oh well lol.

Games are supposed to be fun right of the bat, if you don't find it fun then it's just not your taste. No shame in that.Treflis

Not always true.. some of my favorite games started off slow but later on became some of my fav games.

How can you forget that you are playing a game of 90s in 2012 and then judging it. It not for you but for all those who try this game out in today's world where the gaming industry has progressed so much.

Ask how HL2 from those when gaming industry was so weak. And FPS category was virtually nothing. HL2 has not only helped the FPS gnere rise but also gifted the innovation to gaming world. Good story, clever puzzles and a nice and comfortable gameplay.

HL2 is not made in SRIII style with raunchy and robust elemnets ready to mae you laugh. It's about science and puzzles.

I'm 17 so i mayself played the game in 2010 but i can clearly say that it's really the king of FPSs.

Long live Valve who always comes out with innovation.

I had fun with Half lfe. But of course you must consider the fact that the only fps games I played before it was Doom and Quake 2.

It is a very good game but that doesn't mean it aged well. Half Life 2 on the other hand aged incredibly well compared to first game. If you are not having fun stop playing it or imagine that almost every fps you played that involves a little bit story doesn't exist, like the times when it first came out :P .

Half Life 1 hasn't aged well in my opinion. It still stands as one of the most groundbreaking games ever and at the time it was easily the best shooter on the market, but times have changes. It's easy for people to get really nostolgic and say "gaming was so better back during the Half-Life days" but the fact is that gaming is the best it has been now. Our standards for even low-budget games are through the roof because of games like Half-Life increasing our standards.

This holds true with pretty much every classic game. They were amazing at the time. Very few hold up today. Rarely those are FPSs because FPS gaming conventions have changed so much as the technology has improved drastically.

The only FPS I can think of that actually plays like a modern FPS and can hold its own against modern FPSs in terms of pacing, combat, structure, and feel is Halo Combat Evolved (and I know a lot of PC gamers think that game is one of the worst ever made for whatever reason). Half-Life still has a lot of survival/puzzle elements that have been phased out of shooters today and thus replaying Half-Life really feels like a classic. If your standards are more modern then Half Life will probably not be that much fun for you.

Wasdie

It doesn't matter at all. The defining aspects of a game that did not age well are hindering elements that are more intrusive then they were back then thanks to modern advancements, such as the framerate, the graphics and the controls. And in this context enjoyment is tied to the leniency of the person playing, which is subjective.. Everything els (like gameplay changes) is solely subjective, and kind of irrelevant. This is common fact..

And Halo CE's single-player is a boring slog trough endlessly repeating, bland environments.. Half Life 1 is a much, much better game. More weapon diversity, better AI, better environments, much bigger mod support adding to the replay value, arguably better online.

But hey, anyone can disagree, a lot of people prefer Halo CE over HL, and rightfully so. Gaming is a personal experience.
